to wonder what is wrong with fish fingers?

the only place I have see anyone look down their noses at giving a child a fish finger is here. Yes fresh fish may be the ideal but is there something else wrong with that I don't know about?

Fish fingers, buttery baguette, lemon.

Nom.

The only thing wrong with fish fingers is the need to share them with your offspring. They're one of my favourite nursery tea meals - even DH is happy, and he's an utter food-fascist.

fatlazymummy · 13/10/2010 22:00

Actually I have noticed this on a few other forums as well. I think some people just like to put other people down at any opportunity.
I like fish fingers [birdseye haddock fillet are the best ] with new potatoes, peas and tartare sauce. Oven chips are fine as well [or even proper homemade chips]. It's certainly good enough for me and my kids.

elphabadefiesgravity · 13/10/2010 22:04

Had fishfingers for tea tonight on a baguette (Birds Eye cod ones for me)

IMoveTheStars · 13/10/2010 22:10

As long as they're not the random fish ones, and are proper cod/haddock/salmon fillet then they're fine :)

the only place i've seen them bashed on here is that they're not suitable for BLW :) (perhaps fine without the breadcrums) Wink

I think you'll find the best fish finger sandwich is white bread, butter, cheddar cheese and ketchup. Yum!

IMoveTheStars · 13/10/2010 22:16

om nom nom

LunarSea · 13/10/2010 22:17

Nothing wrong with fish fingers - though like with sausages it's worth paying more for good ones.

Spookyoldclothcatpuss · 13/10/2010 22:32

How about a/ they are full of added salt, wrapped in orange breadcrumbs and processed, or
B/ they are usually made from cod which is an endangered species...
Apart from that they taste lovely!
Unfortunately, we cant have them because DD is coeliac. We make our own with salmon, dipped in egg, then polenta, then fried. Dead easy, cheap, no nasties in them and they taste fabulous!

IMoveTheStars · 13/10/2010 22:47

I thought cod had been taken off the 'at risk' group as they had reached sustainable level again (please correct me if I'm wrong)

Spooky - thanks for the recipe, DS currenly has salmon in breadcrumbs but guessing we'll be going down the polenta route before much longer (thanks for advice on the other thread btw)

DeadBodyofKaraStarbuckThrace · 13/10/2010 22:48

I buy the salmon ones for DS.
Life is too short to make you own. Plus I hate fish.

I also like chicken nuggets but only the ones made from whole chicken chunks, the ones made from processed chicken are nasty.

Everything in moderation, I say.

Shirkeygarotte - your post made me pmsl!

JoanHolloway · 13/10/2010 22:51

Yes, home made salmon goujons, polenta, very nice.

But, when I want fish fingers I want proper, from a packet fish fingers. Neither do I make my own baked beans. I open a tin. Because from scratch, they wouldn't be baked beans, they'd be haricot beans cooked in tomato sauce.

RobynLou · 13/10/2010 22:55

not suitable for blw? no-one told me!
DD loves fish fingers, I love fish fingers, they're great!

IMoveTheStars · 13/10/2010 22:57

'Course they're fine... they do have a higher salt content, so obv not all the time, but bread's fine and that's got salt in Grin

keepingupwiththejoneses · 13/10/2010 23:05

My boys love them. DS3 is ceoliac and Youngs and sainsburys both do gluten free ones that are lovely.

IMoveTheStars · 13/10/2010 23:06

woo, thanks keeping (gets ahead of results)

verytellytubby · 13/10/2010 23:06

I tell my twins they are chicken fingers as they won't eat fish and they gobble them down {grin]. Evil mummy.

invisibleink · 13/10/2010 23:12

They are kind of a lazy meal though...

Yes but but... if you truly loved your children, surely you would prepare a nutrtious home cooked meal with nutritionally balanced components? Is that really too much trouble for the health and well being of your loved ones? Dont you think they are worth more than frozen processed crap??

Passive Aggressive :)

TurnipLantern · 13/10/2010 23:47

I don't like fish fingers. Don't know why. Like fish, breaded fish and goujons but don't feel the ff lurve. Fortunately my children do not share my view!.

Thanks for tips on polenta as newly gluten free!

IMoveTheStars · 13/10/2010 23:51

[summons the terminator]

I prepare home made salmon fishfingers with a wholegrain breadcrumb crust [snurk]

[smug] Grin

invisibleink · 13/10/2010 23:56

And Jareth, have you researched the levels of mercury in that salmon and the detrimental effects that said mercury may have? You just cant be too careful!

Also, is it farmed salmon??

IMoveTheStars · 14/10/2010 00:02

[slaps smug face off the invisible one with a large expensive bass]

psssahhww

No, I haven't researched the amount of mercury. Mercury isn't flammable though so have no defence.

Balls, have you won?

[it's all DS will eat. Help]
