My friend is due to go into hospital for a biopsy following 2 abnormal smear tests and her putting off going for her 3rd.
At the weekend she had a gush of blood and stomach pains Dr's thought initially she had miscarried but today she has been told further info which has resulted in her having to go for a biopsy.
please ladies if you have like me been avoiding your smear please I beg of you go and have it done as soon as possible.

This lady is a young woman with a young son.I have everything crossed for her it is nothing serious.

I faced my fears and went today after avoiding for 5yrs having it done.

Thanks for posting this, i am due to go for follow up but have been putting it off.

TheLadyEvilStar · 13/10/2010 00:52

Sea, please do go. I have been putting mine off until today and once she told me what was happening I made my appt and had smear done 10 minutes later.

My last was abnormal and so I am a teeny bit nervous but I am sure I will be ok!

MaimAndKilloki · 13/10/2010 01:36

:( Hope she will be ok

Smear tests are annoying, but the alternative would be much worse.

Gincla · 13/10/2010 01:48

I agree, My friend is having to undergo a coloscopy (sp?) shes 21...

It is a horrible thing to have to endure but nothing compared with that!

cornflakequeenie · 13/10/2010 08:03

I'm currently waiting for the results of my Colposcopy. I had severe cell changes and also had some biopsies taken. It's been 2 weeks now so hopefully not much longer. It's killing me.

I'm 26 and have an 8 month old son.

Please, like the op said, get it done. It takes 5 minutes if that, and could bloody well save your life.

TheLadyEvilStar · 19/10/2010 00:06

Ive said it before, there are only two words needed on a thread like this:
Jade Goody!

GollyMissMolly · 19/10/2010 01:02

I've went for 12 years without a smear due to a really bad phobia but it has played on my mind. There is a site called Dr Thom that lets you pay for a home smear. It costs £115 which is pricey but I did it last week and am nervously awaiting results. So anyone who won't go for a smear and can afford the home kit please conside it.

DingALongCow · 19/10/2010 14:17

I've just this second booked mine. Been putting it off for years but you've prompted me to do it.

FromGirders · 19/10/2010 14:23

Ok. (sigh)
Have just booked. First appointment I could get was 9th Nov!
Thank you for my kick, hope your friend is ok.

TondelayooohSchwarlock · 19/10/2010 14:28

Someone remind me - how regular do you need to go...I'm coming to 2 years since last one.

huffythethreadslayer · 19/10/2010 14:30

Hope your friend is o.k. It's such a worry when a scare like this occurs. And this stage is often worse than getting to the diagnosis! Not knowing always makes you picture the worst possible scenario. I hope that it turns out to be the worst bit anyway!

I went for mine for the first time in over 10 years. I had to go to the local womens' hospital as my doctor has problems (tilted womb, long way back, I black out during any kind of internal examination). Being in a hospital didn't help at all. I nearly blacked out again, but it's done with now and it came back good and clear. Already dreading the next one :( But too worry-some to not for it when it's due next time.

BudaisintheZONE · 19/10/2010 14:31

UK recommendations are every 3 years.

I live in Hungary and recommendations here are every year.

Am due one around now I think.

lazarusb · 19/10/2010 16:24

Even an initial cognitive test can be a false alarm- there are so many things which can affect them. It is so important to go. My cousin was diagnosed at 21 with cervical cancer but was treated, has recovered and gone on to have 2 children. :)
I hope your friend is ok. They aren't nice but so, so important.

ray81 · 19/10/2010 16:33

i've just booked mine. have been putting it off. i have to have one every 6 months my last was due just after i fell pg with dd so didnt get it done. she is now 5 months.

thanks for reminding me.

TheLadyEvilStar · 19/10/2010 22:06

Thanks for all your wishes for my friend, she has her appt through for November. They cannot do the biospy any earlier as she is still bleeding heavily.

Now for all of us who have been putting this off and now have had it done - well done...I hope they all come back fine for us.

theywillgrowup · 19/10/2010 22:18

i had to go to the doctors on Monday (womens things)anyway got chatting to GP about when my next smear is due and was shocked that nowadays they dont do smears till your 25

GP said was very rare before that age to get cc

im in dorset health region not sure if its universal, god i remember it use to be 16 or sexually active, mind you this was 20yrs+ ago

even so if i had a daughter and they wouldnt perform a smear once sexually active i would pay to go private, was truly shocked at 25

cakewench · 19/10/2010 22:34

yes please ladies, just go in and get it over with. It's not all that bad, and if there is a problem, it's so much better in the long run to get it detected early!

I just had mine done in August.

salizchap · 19/10/2010 22:38

Well done OP. I always go ASAP after getting a reminder. It's not worth putting off. In Spain all women get screened every year. Personally, I think they should do that here, but chance would be a fine thing.

zipzap · 20/10/2010 00:02

possibly asking for tmi but do you need to go at any special time of the month?

TheLadyEvilStar · 20/10/2010 00:03

Zip, no there is no need not to go because you have your period - it makes no difference.

OP posts:
ramonaquimby · 20/10/2010 00:06

have just booked -nhs leaflet said 10 days from the end of your last period

ChippingIn · 20/10/2010 00:28

TLES - how sure are you about that? The advice used to be 10 days after your last period (as per ramon)?

I will book mine tomorrow. I couldn't go when they sent the appointment through and I haven't re-booked - that was a year ago Blush

Cornflakequeenie - have you had any of your results yet?

izzywizzywoowooo · 20/10/2010 00:31

I think its shocking they don't offer smears for under 25's...My friend is 21 and having to have a coloscopy so surely that shows it can happen and people under 25 should have smears?

How do you go about arranging a smear do you just ring the doctors?

Also is this kind of stuff hereditory? Just my mum has to have them every year due to abnormal cells and my elder sister has had to have some surgery too...worries me a bit!

TheLadyEvilStar · 20/10/2010 00:39

Blush sorry was reading wrongly!!!

its either before your period is due or after it.

Off to naughty step now!!
