I have yet to meet another woman who feels this way, everyone seems to love him!

OP posts:
stainesmassif · 12/10/2010 21:28

He puts women in corsets, push up bras and three inch heels - what's celebratory about that?

ChaosInCamelot · 12/10/2010 21:35

I have always found him to be incredibly annoying...agree that he is patronising too. Can't watch his programme!

Greedygirl · 12/10/2010 21:38

Stainesmassif - yes I agree with that.

stainesmassif · 12/10/2010 21:47

Ah, thanks gg! I can't imagine ever wearing high heels again tbh, have been ruined by uggs and flip flops.

I always used to wear heels but since having my DS it has been flat shoes all the way apart from the odd night out. I don't necessarily have anything against heels but the heels he puts women in are very tall and how can you wear those control pants and still eat your dinner?! I did like his campaign for teaching teenagers about having a positive body image though. I work with teenagers and the number of girls who say they would gladly have plastic surgery is shocking.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 12/10/2010 21:59

I wont see all this Gok bashing! Your all bonkers he is lovely!

How very dare you...

stainesmassif · 12/10/2010 22:01

I can appreciate high heels aesthetically, but as functional items in my wardrobe.... Not so much these days!

hystericalmum · 12/10/2010 22:04

I think he;s great! I know a few peoplw who've met him & said he's lovely in RL.

TandB · 12/10/2010 22:06

I rather like him - he finds something to be positive about every time.
And maybe it is more helpful to give someone very overweight the confidence that they can look good, rather than knocking them down even further. Maybe once they are looking in the mirror again they may be thinking "hmm, if I can look good now, maybe I can look better if I lose a stone".

boobeloo · 12/10/2010 22:12

Step away from the Spanx Gok, that's not making us embrace and love our curves, that's forcing us to cram our curves into unrelenting and unforgiving fabric until we are unable to fart.

hystericalmum · 12/10/2010 22:32

To be honest boobeloo if he could cure my farting I'd be a happy woman!!!! Grin

sethstarkaddersmum · 12/10/2010 22:33

I'm really liking Doig's idea for a programme - 'one where women just actually LIKE THEMSELVES AS THEY FUCKING ARE'.

I think that should be its name as well - 'Women who just actually like themselves as they fucking are'.

mumsgotatum · 12/10/2010 22:34

YABU, I love Gok, he makes women feel good about their bodies whatever shape and size

Nellykats · 12/10/2010 23:05

To all that love Gok:

So after watching the program do you now really really love yourselves in whatever shape and size? Has your self loathing been cured?

Sadly, I doubt it. Gok's fix is the kind that requires a stylist and then some more money for shopping therapy (yuck) and then it's still not enough. That's why even the ideal shapes and the ones that can afford the clothes are still unhappy, and then there's a bit of botox here, and a boob job there and pretty soon even your vagina needs a nip and tuck.

The ethos of those makeover shows is balls.

MidnightsChild · 12/10/2010 23:34

Nellykats see my previous post ... yes, Gok made a huge difference to my self-esteem and my acceptance of my body. I will never love my flab, stretchmarks, excess weight etc ... but I no longer loathe it, I don't hide away, I get out, enjoy life and am entirely confident about my sexiness.

Nellykats · 12/10/2010 23:44

MidnightsChild, that's a good thing. I just think that happiness shouldn't be about our bums, as the only certainty in this world is that they shall drop below the horizon and there's not much we can do about it. Or at last we shouldn't waste too much time worrying about it.

What I find incredible, is that men can go around with their little beer bellies and their receding hairlines, and we still fall in love with them.

Women need to constantly fix themselves and worry about age and weight, and I think that programs like that enhance the stress.

I'm genuinely happy for you, I just hope you didn't have to parade your boobs on a billboard for it.

Nellykats · 12/10/2010 23:47

Do you know what strikes me when I see the program? I look at the women, all shy and self conscious, and I think "you're actually beautiful, and you don't know it". The girly tat is just a layer, often I prefer to see them in their earlier original look.

MidnightsChild · 12/10/2010 23:51

Oh yes, mine dropped ages ago ... my bottom that is Grin

I agree that there is an inequity between the way men and women are regarded and whilst that is frustrating, I've stopped being angry about it now.

Oh ... and I promise I didn't parade anything anywhere ... my fun & games are entirely private affairs Wink

MidnightsChild · 12/10/2010 23:57

The early programmes focused on good underwear, drinking lots of water, moisturising your skin ... that type of thing. The wardrobe trademarks seem to form a bigger part of the show now, which I agree, I'm not enamoured with. Lets face it, putting on clothes to make yourself feel confident is one thing, but it takes a different type of confidence to remove them ... and that's what I felt his early shows understood.

Nellykats · 12/10/2010 23:57
Grin

I hope I'll stop being angry about it as well...

nice talking to you MidnightsChild, it's good to hear positive stories

stay happy and sexy Wink

jacksmomma · 12/10/2010 23:58

i love him i feel better just for watching his shows , i find it hard to believe he is acting or is scripted i think he seems genuinely lovely

Rockbird · 13/10/2010 10:56

That's all very idealistic and you're not listening to some of the replies here. Yes of course we need to look at how society views people, and of course it's shitty the way that men can look like tramps and no one cares. But unfortunately, until the revolution, that is the way it is. It's all very well to say we have to change it but the leader of the revolution is not going to be the likes of me, because if you're fat, you don't count, you have no say.

For half an hour after this show, I. and several others on here feel just a tiny bit better about ourselves. No other show gives me even that much.

The irony of this is that actually, I barely watch the show because I don't watch much tv. but when I see it, I love it.

SweetBeadieRussell · 13/10/2010 11:16

I think it's indicative of how awful we are made to feel normally that this man's blatant insincerity is lapped up so gratefully.

For me the real answer is a return to proper feminism, where we empower ourselves and each other through genuine sisterhood. But of course no one will admit to being a feminist nowadays. Funny that.

Rockbird · 13/10/2010 11:23

And again SWR, that's great. And in 50 years time women will thank you for that. How are you going to help women now?
