I have yet to meet another woman who feels this way, everyone seems to love him!

So what's the alternative? Because I tell you, there are fuck all other ways that the media will make you feel in any way good for having a normal body. I'd rather watch Gok than any other make over show. That one where they take you off and do your teeth and your tits and your lines. FFS. At least all he does is give you a hairdo and some new clothes.

cakewench · 12/10/2010 20:12

yeah tbh his is my favourite of those makeover-type shows. He's not trying to humiliate people for having lumps in the wrong places, he's trying to show them they can still look great despite (often) not being a size 6. A lot of women have self-esteem issues after putting on a bit of weight, or aging, or whatever, but they're still attractive people. They can't see that for themselves, so it helps to have someone else around to do it.

I'd love to have someone come tell me how to dress. :o

InGodWeTrust · 12/10/2010 20:14

I like him. But to be honest it annoys me when there is mega fat women on there moaning because they look fat. He shouldn't just buy clothes to cover it, he should be saying "lose weight your heart is in danger".

Still the breast cancer one he did was awesome.
I love him like him a bit.

EdgarAllInPink · 12/10/2010 20:17

Gok came across really well on Desert Island Discs. otherwise, if he annoys, why watch?

DomesticG0ddess · 12/10/2010 20:24

I agree Rocklover, but I doubt he actually came up with the programme concept himself. It's just the groping that annoys me!

Rockbird · 12/10/2010 20:39

Yes but speaking as a 'mega fat woman', telling them to lose weight is not going to help them go out of the house and face the world with confidence tomorrow. It might give them a kick up the arse and get them to lose weight but I know myself it can be hard to go out in public a lot of the time. He is giving them short term help.

Doigthebountyeater · 12/10/2010 20:46

He is peddling a load of bullshit. I hate him with a passion. Here's an idea for a programme - one where women just actually LIKE THEMSELVES AS THEY FUCKING ARE -
without having to get highlights/get naked photos /buy puffball skirts or like in those other sick twisted programmes - have fucking operations to make themselves acceptible. It is still a load of mysogynistic crap. It makes me depressed and angry that women are so quick to buy into the whole idea of 'improving' themselves in order to like themselves or feel accepted by society.

If society doesn't accept someone because they've got weird teeth or are 20 stone, it's the society which is sick and needs to be fixed not the individual. Most women seem to have forgotten this. It's like 70's feminism never happened

Rockbird · 12/10/2010 20:49

If society doesn't accept someone because they've got weird teeth or are 20 stone, it's the society which is sick and needs to be fixed not the individual.

Yep, you're right of course, but unfortunately life isn't like that. 'Society should change' doesn't help the 20 stone person with bad teeth to leave her house in the morning. And I know, because I'm that person.

lilystyles · 12/10/2010 20:50

Doigthebountyeater couldn't have put it better myself!

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 12/10/2010 20:50

I love him.

YABU

lilystyles · 12/10/2010 20:51

Rockbird also agree

Mumcentreplus · 12/10/2010 20:55

I find him irritating...

Doigthebountyeater · 12/10/2010 20:57

I hear you Rockbird but society is to blame for your low self esteem. We are not our bodies; we are so much more. I really worry about how women are becoming more and more complicit in their own repression. I know so many women under 40 who've had 'work' done. They say it's to make them feel good, but really it's beacuse they were already feeling inadequate for not meeting our cultural standard of beauty. Gok's programmes are part of the same mind set - 'improving' women so they fit a random idea of beauty generated by our culture. Four hundred years ago (and today in certain African countries) 20 stone ladies would be perceived as really sexy.

TheCrackFox · 12/10/2010 20:58

That was a brilliant post Doigthebountyeater.

sethstarkaddersmum · 12/10/2010 21:02

Doigthebountyeater, GREAT posts.

Nellykats · 12/10/2010 21:03

I like that he has a knack of making women feel good about themselves. That can never be a bad thing

but

I heard (reliably) that he pisstakes about the "fatties" behind the scenes. That makes me a bit :( but then he is so insincere that I shouldn't really be shocked.

MidnightsChild · 12/10/2010 21:05

Rockbird exactly ... it is short-term-ist, but for those people who need it, its bloody vital short-term-ism.

Of course he can be annoying, BUT (and its a big but) he has helped a lot of women get themselves out the door feeling better about themselves. In the earlier programmes he did talk a lot about lifestyle changes that needed to be made, but that does seem to have been lost in more recent series. I think that's because the feedback they've received is that people want to see the quick fix and aren't interested in the longer term aspects ... its the Cinderella thing (unfortunately).

Quite frankly, when I was first single again aged 50, his programme and book helped me to get naked. Simply put, without him, I'd probably have never had sex again and as some of the best sex I've had has been during this particular period of my life, I'd have really missed out Smile

hillbilly · 12/10/2010 21:07

Gok used to work for me as a waiter about 10 years ago and I got on really well with him. DH however couldn't stand him then and still cannot bear him Smile

He was very good at his job btw Wink

Itsjustafleshwound · 12/10/2010 21:07

I loathe these sort of programmes and him...

Sorry, I don't put all the blame on society - it is just a curse of living in the Western World

I don't like any of these make over programmes - nothing changes when the cameras are off and the reasons for the poor self image and feelings of inadequacy are not addressed .... getting nekid is SOO gimmicky

FingandJeffing · 12/10/2010 21:08

I love Doigthebountyeater

Yes yes yes, why would taking your clothes off in front of a bunch of strangers prove anything, it's just really sexist. It totally objectifies women.

Don't get me started on 30 years younger or whatever it is.

Thingumy · 12/10/2010 21:14

Started with that twatty trinny and Susanna -'oh get your tits out and lets cop a feel' urgh

I don't watch any of those programmes.

cupcakesandbunting · 12/10/2010 21:15

Trinny and Susannah are cunts.

Yes they are. Don't tell me off about the c-bomb.

Cunts.

electra · 12/10/2010 21:18

yanbu - never can understand why he's so adored!

Greedygirl · 12/10/2010 21:27

I find the end of the show irritating especially as I feel that some of the women really don't want to walk about in their underkegs but feel immense pressure to do so. But...I can't think of another programme where you see so many normal bodies and that is refreshing. The episode where women talked about their stretch marks made me cry! As a teenager I thought that I was a freak for having stretch marks.
