Judgmental vs having an opinion?

lilystyles · 11/10/2010 16:19

I am new to mumsnet (joined yesterday) and have found on talk there are a lot of women getting shouted down and accusations flying around of posters being 'judgemental' and 'generalising' Hmm.
I am curious about when having an opinion crosses the line into being being judgmental? Another question, when does coming to a personal conclusion based on your own experiences become generalising? Thanks Smile

I find you're judgemental if you disagree with someone's choice then you're a netmums reugee and daily mail reading loon, blah, blah - yawn. Bleeding heart liberal land it is!

newwave · 11/10/2010 21:37

How about "I detest the EDL and all they stand for but they have a right to their opinions as long as they stay within the law"

For that I was called a facist as was another poster who supported me

Mumcentreplus · 11/10/2010 21:42

Well everyone has a right to an opinion..even racist, dumb wankerish ones..the people who think they are racist dumb wankers also have an opinion and the right to challenge them..a facist would just lock their arses up..do the understand what a facist is???

newwave · 11/10/2010 21:47

Yes, although this is going "off thread"

A person who judges others as inferior based upon race or etnic origin or sexual orientation and (maybe) lifestyle.

duchesse · 11/10/2010 21:50

Judgmental in my opinion is extrapolating from the anecdotal to the general without any further thought process- "x happened to me/my neighbour/my granny's cat and therefore must be true of everybody", and thereafter assuming that because you believe it, there is no other tolerable opinion. Judging seems unwilling or unable to tolerate that other people might perfectly legitimately do things differently, and it smacks of lazy thinking or an inability to think laterally around a subject. Kneejerk thought. Ditto anyone who gets all their opinions ready-made from a newspaper or other media source without questioning the validity or vested interest of that source.

Mumcentreplus · 11/10/2010 21:51

You were called a Facist for saying they have a right to an opinion.. abet a dodgy evil one...they obviously do not understand what a Facist is...

newwave · 11/10/2010 21:51

duchesse (claps loudly)

newwave · 11/10/2010 21:57

Mumc, within very wide tolerances I believe everyone has a right to have a point of view however obnoxious. Griffin spouted his on Question Time and started the destruction of his party (loud cheers).

The TV programme about the BNP in Barking/Dagenham was a hoot one man wasnt even aware his own Grandson was of mixed race ffs.

duchesse · 11/10/2010 22:00

I really enjoyed watching Griffin shooting himself repeatedly in the foot, and for that reason alone would preserve the right of any political party to air their views, however distasteful they may be to me. The only thing I fear is that the people who support such stuff may not be clever enough to see it for what it is, and may think it gives the party legitimacy.

duchesse · 11/10/2010 22:02

when I say "legitimacy" I mean a toe hold in power. Obviously the BNP is a legitimate political party that opens its membership to anyone even people with foreign-sounding names--

duchesse · 11/10/2010 22:03

damn. fouled up my strike through. You get the idea

newwave · 11/10/2010 22:06

I may regret this post.

There are some in this society who have the IQ of a sponge and are taken in by the BNP because it gives legitimency to their racist views. It also give them something to blame their own inadequancies on.

Portofino · 11/10/2010 22:06

Now DaftPunk has views abhorrent to many (including me) but we have had many a conversation on the Fantasy Football thread, where the most out there stuff is how many Chelsea players one should have on ones team, and whether Wayne Rooney is indeed a c**t or not. I have decided that I am a grown up and can choose my rules of engagement.

PinkieMinx · 11/10/2010 22:10

Was that an example of generalised judginess for the OP? Wink

Shelly32 · 11/10/2010 22:11

Don't regret it! It's a perfect example of a valid opinion!! Smile

Mumcentreplus · 11/10/2010 22:21

and one I agree with newwave Grin
