I can agree that perhaps she doesn't always make the best choices and moans a bit.

But I honestly don't think she is as bad as people are keen to make out.

In fact, I like her

Flame away!

YABVVVVVVVU!

She hates women who are mothers, women who wear cheaper clothes than her (and she only wears designer), women who are younger then her, women who do not work (ie SAHMs).

Just a few examples: at a picture of some women at the races, her caption was "haven't they got desks they should be at?"

She labelled her Devon locals as "toothless" and bleats about not being more popular with them, and she rates the feelings of animals above those of humans. Her horses have psychic advisors on a permanent retainer and she drowns in self pity at being in debt.

I have read her columns for about eight years and last year I just realisd she was a nasty piece of work who sees negativity in everything and everyone. She is toxic and drains the life out of the beauty of the world we are lucky enough to live in. Life is precious and its wasted on someone who is very priveleged yet hates everything about it.

bethjeff · 09/10/2010 10:46

NestaFiesta, unfortunately I think that is something that we are all guilty of. (Not appreciating life for what it is etc.)

As I've said, she makes some dubious choices (as have most!) having lived in the same part of Devon as her it is indeed a bit backwards in it's own way. A nice way. But not for everyone.

I think that there are bigger villians than Liz whose only real crime is possibly having more money than sense.

"she rates the feelings of animals above those of humans"

Good on her, so do I Grin

ValiumSingleton · 09/10/2010 12:52

I agree with you, and she speaks sense about the fashion industry and the thinness of models and so on.... I don't know why she is so mocked. Yes she moans about the state of her own life, but she's also very astute about the fashion industry, isn't afraid to speak out........ I like that. Being self-absorbed and nuts about animals doesn't that totally invalidate every point she makes.

TiggyD · 09/10/2010 14:52

I always thought she was a fictional thing as no real person would be as stupid.

2blessed2bstressed · 09/10/2010 15:54

Have had to stop myself reading her stuff as it always ends with me slamming the paper down and snorting "grow up!", then spending the rest of the day feeling grumpy

Pixel · 09/10/2010 20:10

She might love animals but I'm afraid she's one of those awful people who let their sick old animals suffer on for weeks because they can't bear to part with them. She was writing for ages about that cat who had kidney and liver problems and could no longer use its back legs. I was willing her to have the poor thing PTS.

roomonthebroom · 09/10/2010 20:28

I feel really sorry for her, I think she is probably mentally ill, and all that crazy boasting about labels she wears, furniture she has, coffee she drinks etc is because she has cripplingly low self esteem.

I agree though that she doesn't know what being 'poor' is like, she has a well paid job and opportunities to earn a good wage, she just chooses to spend money on odd things- her priorities are in the wrong place. I don't mean on her animals particularly, I know people who spend a lot on keeping horses but economise in other areas- she doesn't seem to do this.

I also agree she will never meet a decent man for a long term relationship if she keeps writing about her dates and actually think she doesn't 'hate' SAHMs or working mothers, she is just pissed off that she doesn't fall into either category.

For months I wanted to e- mail her and beg her to see a doctor as I was worried about her mental illness, and feel the DM should have offered her support rather than print her rambles as they have a duty of care to their employees surely.

roomonthebroom · 09/10/2010 20:38

Last paragraph should have said 'mental state' rather than mental illness since I'm not a doctor.

BootyMum · 09/10/2010 21:41

Agree with NestaFiesta. She would be better off spending what "little" money she has on therapy, seriously.

lottiejenkins · 09/10/2010 21:44

All she does is moan and go on about how old she is! Oh and as someone else said she tells everything about who she is shagging!!!

otchayaniye · 09/10/2010 22:48

she is an algorithm

SpringHeeledJack · 09/10/2010 22:54

I bought her book once. In fact I bought it twice- once for my friend who was getting married

Blush

I thought it was really funny and I still pick it up sometimes if am feeling poorly or out of sorts

Blush Blush

...but her stuff now seems beyond the pale. I think she had a sense of humour once but I don't think the Mail pay her to be funny- just to be barking

Tootiredforgodtyping · 09/10/2010 22:58

I loathe her. YABVU

poshsinglemum · 09/10/2010 23:43

Why do you all hate Liz so much? I feel sorry. Her ex was a philanderer. She loved him; he destroyed her. Been there. I think dep down she'd loved to have been a mum to his kids. At least she has an outlet for her pain (albiet via the Mail on Sunday!)

Valpollicella · 09/10/2010 23:56

If I wrote the shite she did and touted it to papers I'd be quite rightfully laughed out of their offices.

I can appreciate that her ex was a shagger, but the rest of the drivel she spouts is just, at best ridiculous, and at worse offensive to quite a lot of people

preghead · 09/10/2010 23:57

I think she is a headcase.

squirrel42 · 10/10/2010 00:32

She seems to have a lot of issues. I feel sorry for her, although that doesn't excuse some of the things she's said and done.

otchayaniye · 10/10/2010 08:35

I'm quite shocked that people don't know she's a character, and it's invented/souped up/presented in such a way to irritate the reader. 'Irritants' such as her and certain TV presenters rub readers and viewers up the wrong way, but compel you to read on/watch on.

Not saying certain life events she writes about haven't happened, but her writings on the subject are invented.

Take that from a (proper) journalist Grin

TotalChaos · 10/10/2010 08:49

I find the fashion industry/media culture based columns interesting, the real life moaning a bit meh

elinorbellowed · 10/10/2010 11:36

Liz Lemon is NOT based on her! Liz Lemon is a goddess who eats badly, supports other women and laughs at herself. Liz Jones hates other women and has no true self-awareness.
PS I luuurrrve Tina Fey.

agedknees · 10/10/2010 14:32

She does not write, she whinges. Incessently.

YABVVVVVVVVVVU.

bethjeff · 10/10/2010 15:44

I would invite her to my parties, I know that she wouldn't hog the buffet and would probably have some amusing stories to tell. She would be quite well dressed and has good manners.
Ideal party guest in my book!! Wink

OP posts:
Habbibu · 10/10/2010 15:53

Until she slated your party in the following day's paper...

tittybangbang · 10/10/2010 16:04

Love her. Whenever I feel my life as a SAHM is shit I just have to read her column and think 'Could be worse: I could be Liz Jones!'
