somebody committed suicide in my local mall today, by jumping off a balcony. he was only 27 :(

while that is obviously awful and shocking and sad, that's not what I'm posting about.

apparently the event was posted on FB within less than five minutes.

and the security guards who obviously rushed to the scene straight away couldn't get to the man. because of the crowds of people filming it on their mobiles.

we were in town a few hours later and people were still milling around taking photos of where he jumped.

FFS. Angry :(

why would people do that?!

BuzzingNoise · 05/10/2010 19:13

someone else was posting about this incident too. They were on the escalator. Sad
How awful that people filmed a dying or dead man.

ShadeofViolet · 05/10/2010 19:13

Sick!

Talker2010 · 05/10/2010 19:13

Because there is always the chance of selling it to the local news-station or rag

You are NOT being unreasonable ... It is VILE

Firawla · 05/10/2010 19:14

yanbu, very sick and also quite self centred if they have to film and post it on their face book like "oh look what I saw today" rather than spare a thought for the poor man himself and his family, it seems a bit "me me me" & also quite bizarre
whole thing is very sad :(

TotorosOcarina · 05/10/2010 19:15

Thats so horrible, I can't imagine even being able to look in the direction of the poor man, never mind to film it.

I think the internet/film/media have SERIOUSLY warped peoples morals and sense of decency.

:(

My thoughts are with his family.

Mumcentreplus · 05/10/2010 19:16

wtf???..how awful Sad

unfitmother · 05/10/2010 19:18

How horrible!

Vallhala · 05/10/2010 19:20

Truly awful. Poor man.

Just read your OP out to my teenaged daughters and am thankful that they are just as horrified as me. There's hope for the world yet.

frgr · 05/10/2010 19:20

That's absolutely horrible.

Knickers0nMyHead · 05/10/2010 19:21

YANBU how sad.

AvadaKedavra · 05/10/2010 19:21

Angry it's a crazy world. I sincerely hope that none of this young lad's friends and family saw this on FB before finding out through normal methods.

Skyrg · 05/10/2010 19:22

YANBU, ofc. It is awful, and heartless, and many other words I can't even think of.

However - and I do think this is important - he chose to kill himself publicly. I realise he was probably not in a normal frame of mind, but I still think that it's expected that people will be curious. It's also a way of dealing with shock, and I do feel for the people who saw it and now have to deal with that. I saw someone go under a train once and was horrified, I still can't forget it. Obviously that's a selfish way of looking at it, but it's still true that others are affected.

Ofc that does not make it right that people think they can broadcast it and treat it as amusement.

My thoughts are also with his family. How awful for them that their grief is now so public :(

thisisyesterday · 05/10/2010 19:23

waaah you live in the same town as me :(

nickytwotimes · 05/10/2010 19:24

awful Sad
his poor family

RunawayWife · 05/10/2010 19:24

There are some truly sick people out there.

DetectivePotato · 05/10/2010 19:25

Disgusting that they were stood there filming it!!! Shock Angry

This is why I am getting increasingly fed up with the amount of things that mobiles do. What is wrong with phoning and texting?

Skyrg · 05/10/2010 19:27

I think they had a case once where someone was on the top of a building, and the crowd was shouting 'jump, jump!' He jumped and I believe the crowd were later warned they could be arrested. Quite right too...
Makes me feel ill that some people want that sort of entertainment. I'm quite happy with the TV thanks very much.

Tee2072 · 05/10/2010 19:35

There is another thread on MN from someone who was there when it happened. How horrible of people to film it, though.

JazzieJeff · 05/10/2010 19:35

YANBU, I live in the south west and there was a news story a few weeks back about a teenage girl jumping off a multi storey car park in a successful suicide bid. Instead of anyone helping, people around stood and filmed it on their mobile phones. Who are these animals? The police should be able to prosecute.

Tolalola · 05/10/2010 19:37

Ugh that is completely hideous. Sad

Makes me feel a bit sick thinking of it. I had a friend at uni who committed suicide by jumping off our building, and we all had a complete fit when the student newspaper published a picture of the scene which included a corner of the blanket they put over his body.

AlgebraKnocksItUpANotchBAM · 05/10/2010 19:41

yep I do thisisyesterday - you know TruthSweet I think?

It wasn't you who saw it was it? :(

I do see your point though, Skyrg

OP posts:
Skyrg · 05/10/2010 19:44

I know it's the Daily Mail, but in the interests of 'proving' my earlier point about crowds shouting 'jump':

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1065033/How-far-bounce--The-extraordinary-taunts-sick-ghouls-jeered-teenager-leapt-death.html

Makes a horrible read. When the poor guy (who they think was depressed) jumped, teenagers rushed past the police and took pictures of his body. FFS.

thisisyesterday · 05/10/2010 19:46

yes, i know truthsweet!
no, i didn't see it, but went past on way to Asda and saw lots of police and ambulances outside

friend and i joked about metrobus running into people again :(

OP I didn't witness him fall as i was on the escelator at the time. I reached the top seconds later.

All i saw was lots of very very shocked people and people being sick.

I am sure that after a few moments your usual rubberneckers arrived to try and film or take photos though.
