somebody committed suicide in my local mall today, by jumping off a balcony. he was only 27 :(

while that is obviously awful and shocking and sad, that's not what I'm posting about.

apparently the event was posted on FB within less than five minutes.

and the security guards who obviously rushed to the scene straight away couldn't get to the man. because of the crowds of people filming it on their mobiles.

we were in town a few hours later and people were still milling around taking photos of where he jumped.

FFS. Angry :(

why would people do that?!

I'm very glad I postponed going into town today. must be so awful for people who saw it. happened in Bromley where I used to live too.

can i also point out that at the moment suicide has not been named as cause of death.

he had shopping with him which makes it less likely that he would have taken his own life.

not that it matters whether he chose to take his life or not.

thisisyesterday · 05/10/2010 19:51

hmm so you live in our town too gigantaur???? i never knew there were so many of us on here

thisisyesterday · 05/10/2010 19:52

omg don't say that?!?!?

as in, it's a possibility he was pushed? how awful :(

AlgebraKnocksItUpANotchBAM · 05/10/2010 19:55

that's what I heard too actually - when DH called (to tell me the mall was closed off, as I was on the way there) he said nobody knew what happened - but it says on a local news site it's not being treated as suspicious.

QueenGigantaurofMnet · 05/10/2010 19:57

no one wants to admit to living here TIY.

from what i heard people saying atthe time there is a thought that he was showing off, walking along the barrier wall and may have slipped.

In some ways almost more tragic

Scorpette · 05/10/2010 19:57

Skyrg, it was in Derby last year. Negotiators were trying to talk him down but a crowd had gathered and were shouting and jeering at him and the police had nearly talked him down and he was reaching for an officer's hand when some idiot shouted out that he was wasting tax payers' money and others joined in and that's what made him turn round and jump. Apparently, loads of people rushed the police cordon to take pics and videos of him once he fell - and I have a horrible feeling that I remember that he didn't die instantly, either. Sick, sick, sick Sad

QueenGigantaurofMnet · 05/10/2010 19:59

Also i would have thought that if he had intended to commit suicide he would have chosen the north carpark and jumped outside the building.

AlgebraKnocksItUpANotchBAM · 05/10/2010 19:59

I actually quite like living here - only moved here in 2008. Not feeling too great about it right now though, it's only a couple of weeks since that big fight :(

Skyrg · 05/10/2010 20:00

Whoever shouted should be arrested for bloody murder. That's horrible.

I'm going to build a rocket and start the human race again on another planet. Who's with me?

thisisyesterday · 05/10/2010 20:00

lol well there is that gigantaur!

yes, people have jumped off the outside before haven't they. but there was one other that jumped from the inside... that's why the plastic guards were put above the railings on the higher carpark levels

i can't see you accidentally falling all that way... although maybe OFF an escalator

QueenGigantaurofMnet · 05/10/2010 20:04

the fight was horrific too.
I was in town the following day when the park was all cordoned off.

I hadn't a clue what had happened until i saw the paper a day or so later.

OrmRenewed · 05/10/2010 20:04

Fucking twats!

And DD is sulking because I wouldn't let her 'lie' about her age to set up a fb account.

This sort of thing makes me hate people Sad

QueenGigantaurofMnet · 05/10/2010 20:06

there have been a couple of suicides from the train station and the building above it.

I have only been here a few years too so don't remember another inside the mall. thankfully.

At the moment they haven't even named him so i guess when they do they will have more information to decide what the other circumstances are

thisisyesterday · 05/10/2010 20:06

yes that was awful wasn't it :(

Faaamily · 05/10/2010 20:11

Repulsive behaviour. Imagine if it was your relative or friend.

IDIOTS.

AlgebraKnocksItUpANotchBAM · 05/10/2010 20:11

My instinct is to blame the internet, and media in general desensitizing us to gore and violence etc. But then, people used to go to public hangings etc... maybe it's just instinct to look Confused

OP posts:
Glitterknickaz · 05/10/2010 20:14

you lot aren't far from me then Smile

incredibly sad, and how awful to be filmed Sad

QueenGigantaurofMnet · 05/10/2010 20:14

i think that people think the idea of it is gorey and shocking but also holds some macabre fascination.

In reality the people that do witness such things are deeply affected by it.
My neighbour is beside herself and the other people who were close enough to have seen him fall also appeared to be far from happy with the situation.

I do think the media does share some of the blame though.

verytellytubby · 05/10/2010 20:15

Vile Sad

thisisyesterday · 05/10/2010 20:16

hmm glitterknickaz, you are the same age as me and i also have 3 children! mine are almost 6, 3 and 1.5

AlgebraKnocksItUpANotchBAM · 05/10/2010 20:18

I'm in the area that begins with M.

Something a bit similar to this (the FB element) happened in my area last year. A man who lived on my road died quite suddenly and people gathered round to watch the ambulance and police arrive (which made me Angry to begin with, as they already knew exactly what had happened). I went online (was working from home that day), quickly looked at FB and someone had written "I was going shopping but now I'm waiting for the body to come out". I was Shock at the comment, but sure enough, later that day, video of it appeared on FB.

Some people are just sick.

TryLikingClarity · 05/10/2010 20:28
Sad

That's sick.

I feel for his family.

2 years ago a teenager was run over and crushed by a bus in our local city. A friend of mine was walking past when it happened. She was in total shock and the ambulance was there very quickly to assist. Sadly it was too late to save the teenager.

My friend said she was Shock and sickened to see that people stopped to take pics of this accident on their phones! Yuck! So disrespectful.

Glitterknickaz · 05/10/2010 20:35

yeah, I'm slightly South of you down the A264 in Horsham
