Yes, YABU.

NestaFiesta · 04/10/2010 22:37

YANBU.

GypsyMoth · 04/10/2010 22:38

the word 'single' wasnt uttered then? for once i'm not toooo offended if not!!

Hassled · 04/10/2010 22:38

It's often not a choice, so YANBU.

Some mothers choose not to work, some feel that the cost of childcare/whatever circumstances they are in means that working is not an option.

But much easier for ITN to just use a vague catch-all phrase.

YABU, a few may not be able to work through disabilities etc but millions choose not too - be it because they dont want to work or because they consider childcare to be too high etc.

BelleDameSansMerci · 04/10/2010 22:50

Hmmm... I'm often pissed off by "mothers who choose to work" as I feel I have no bloody choice in the matter. Sooo, YANBU IMO.

TheCrackFox · 04/10/2010 22:52

YANBU

I would have quite liked to have worked but a nanny (I and DH both worked shifts) would have cost more than my take home pay. I can't say that I felt I had any choice but to give up work.

CardyMow · 04/10/2010 22:52

Choose not to work. Hmm. DP works, but if I was to work, I would only get a minimum wage job. My childcare for ONE dc in nursery would be £52 a day. I would earn £46.80 a day. Great choice...I'd be paying to work...Angry

Are you offended by the thought that, as a SAHM, you're not classed as 'working'?

I don't get it Confused

NotanOtter · 04/10/2010 22:55

Happy Mum 'chose not to work' - stay at home mums do work albeit in the home

Are they hoping the electorate will all sit about stroking their beards nodding sagely at the cuts whilst envisaging women, cup of coffee in hand and feet up watching daytime telly Hmm?

olderandwider · 04/10/2010 22:56

Economically inactive is more accurate.

NotanOtter · 04/10/2010 22:59

olderandwider thats a lovely positive phrase.....

I am actually self employed - so not strictly true of me anyway but sounds quite insulting tbh

Unwind · 04/10/2010 23:03

YANBU - SAHM is harder work than any job I've had

ja9 · 04/10/2010 23:04

oh purlease. get over yourself. it's a turn of phrase. no-one is suggesting being a SAHM isn't hard work. really![aggravated sigh]

HeathcliffMoorland · 04/10/2010 23:05

I don't see the problem.

Many mothers do choose not to work.

Some don't work, and it's not by choice, but...

IMoveTheStars · 04/10/2010 23:06

YANBU. I (luckily) have a job which means I will be better off after childcare, but the difference is minimal - I'm only continuing to work at the moment because my job is perfect and I'm looking to long term gain.

Anyone earning under £15 a year and having to work full time with kids in childcare will be working for nothing.

NotanOtter · 04/10/2010 23:08

ja9 does the wording not suggest that?

OP posts:
ja9 · 04/10/2010 23:10

NAO - no, it doesn't. you're being sensitive / touchy (delete as appropriate!)

now, go pour yourself a vino or g&T, and CHILL OUT Wink

NotanOtter · 04/10/2010 23:13

oh ok will do
