that baked beans should count for two, by that logic?

(AI also BU to think that this may be one of the most trivial threads I have ever started?)

Beans are legumes, they don't ever count as vegetables sorry.

TheChewyToffeeMum · 01/10/2010 17:42

But peas are legumes too.

IMoveTheStars · 01/10/2010 17:42

I reckon a whole can of baked beans is two portions, yes.

Grin

I also think that popcorn counts as 1 or your 5 too.

melpomene · 01/10/2010 17:44

Legumes / pulses can count as one portion per day.

melpomene · 01/10/2010 17:45

I don't think the sort of 'tomato sauce' that comes with tinned beans or spaghetti would have enough tomato in it to count as a portion, though.

bintofbohemia · 01/10/2010 17:45

I've just looked at the FSA website - apparently beans and pulses do count. But if they are in tomato sauce, which counts as one according to something I saw the other day, that makes beans 2 types of veg in one tin, no?

I really should get out more...

How many portions of grapes in a bottle of wine?

bubbleOseven · 01/10/2010 17:45

"But peas are legumes too"

I think there's some confusion here due to the fact that what americans call peas and what brits calls peas are two different things.

For example, we say black eyed beans (which are a legume) and the americans say black eyed peas (which aren't peas, but beans, and therefore a legume)

Hope thats clear as mud Grin

nameymcnamechange · 01/10/2010 17:47

Lol at the people taking this seriously!

overmydeadbody · 01/10/2010 17:49

Do you mean tinned spaghetti in tomato suace?!

I didn't think people actually ate that. At least not people who counted their five a days.

TheCrackFox · 01/10/2010 17:51

I have always thought that potatoes should count as one of your five a day. I know they are not strictly vegetables but they are close enough IMO.

bubbleOseven · 01/10/2010 17:52

Hey who'se taking it seriously, Not me.

I thought the OP meant proper spaghetti sauce. As "overmydeadbody* points out, people who eat tinned spaghetti, if such people really do exist, certainly don't care about their 5 a day.

Grin
bintofbohemia · 01/10/2010 17:53

See, apparently it's not the best way of getting your 5 a day but it's better than a poke in the eye.

I've been quite reassured that beans count, having two very fussy little boys who eat bugger all.

OP posts:
bubbleOseven · 01/10/2010 17:56

Tell youself that if it makes you feel better Grin

I delude myself that wine counts as a portion of grape so I'm not in any position to judge!

bintofbohemia · 01/10/2010 18:00

Beans, I can get with, it makes sense.

Kids tinned spaghetti shapes claiming to be 1 of 5, less so. Hey, my kids like alphabet spaghetti (once in a while when I'm all out of options) and they definitely don't care about their 5 a day.

OP posts:
pjmama · 01/10/2010 18:00

A box of Thorntons Cherry Liqueurs counts as one portion. Have a glass of wine with them and that's two. Wink

And what's wrong with tinned spagetti?! You'll be dissing tinned ravioli next, what's the world coming to?! Grin

psychomum5 · 01/10/2010 18:24

the nutritionist at the hospital said they do when we were having eating issues with DD1 and then DS2.

and they know all there is to know on these thingsWinkGrin

actually, in all seriousness, they should, but the one I had, worse than useless, so no help at all, so I took all she said with a pinch of salt.

AFAIK, baked beans are counted, tinned spag might be, depending on whichever source your believe.

I believe they are......especially when I have a DS1 who hates all manner of fruit and veg but will eat tinned stuff happily!!

PrivetDancer · 01/10/2010 18:31

I really don't think it's fair that potatoes don't count.
Accept that chips, mushy peas and tomato sauce would not be 3 portions, but nice steamed new potatoes?! What's not good about that?

I like spaghetti hoops.

muggglewump · 01/10/2010 18:35

I read somewhere that potatoes do count, but they don't say that in case some thick people then eat 2 bags of crisps, and 3 bags of chips and think they've had their 5 a day.

I also read that baked beans do count, but only once, so eating 5 tins still only gives you one portion (and a bad case of diarrhoea you'd think)

Mind you, I do read lots of stuff that may be made up.

bintofbohemia · 01/10/2010 18:59

To have your 5 a day - they have to be 5 different things, so two bananas only equal 1 portion, am I right?

OP posts:
nannylocal · 01/10/2010 19:02

I think they do count as a veg, but the 'goodness' is negated by the huge amounts of salt and sugar and so shouldn't really be used as a 5-a-day unless desperate!

Morloth · 01/10/2010 19:06

mmmmmm tinned spaghetti on white toast with lots of butter and kraft plastic cheese slice melted over the top.

Grains, dairy, veg! Is a health food.

Bumperlicious · 01/10/2010 19:09

A glass of juice is also allowed to count as one portion.

TheChewyToffeeMum · 01/10/2010 19:17

Bubble0seven - I'm not confused. Peas , beans and lentils are all types of legume i.e seeds in pods.

I know this because we discovered my nephew was allergic to all legumes, not just peanuts, after I poisoned him with split pea soup!

All this of course is completely irrelevant to the OP.

Theincrediblesulk1 · 01/10/2010 19:29

Terry's chocolate orange counts as one! its true honestly hee hee heee
