Just wondering... If there are, please tell me how you justify your believes as a religion?!

"Some very intelligent people end up in these organisations,"

Actually, they appear to form a disproportionately large part of the membership. A brave sociologist needs to go "under cover" and find out what makes bright people more likely, not less, to be taken in.

ColdComfortFarm · 29/09/2010 09:34

I dunno about intelligent. I don't think it is any coincidence that this insane cult is so popular amoung Hollywood actors.

spikeycow · 29/09/2010 09:34

That would be very interesting.

maduggar · 29/09/2010 09:36

explained here lol

"I dunno about intelligent. I don't think it is any coincidence that this insane cult is so popular amoung Hollywood actors."

I realise I may be swimming against the tide here, but there's no such thing as a Hollywood Actor who is anything other than fiercely bright. It may not be the sort of bright your tutor would think deserves a first, nor the sort you want your child to aspire to, but they certainly aren't stupid. They are, however, often rather ill-educated, and that might be the problem: rather like clever auto-didacts get taken in by Von Dannikan, I wonder if people who are less educated than they are clever lack the critical thinking to analyse what initially seems plausible.

maduggar · 29/09/2010 09:42

Sad that John Travolta may have had to "hide" his sons autism because of these nutjobs :(

mrsgordonfreeman · 29/09/2010 09:43

That's the thing, they don't reveal the nutty stuff until you are so deep in it that you can't escape.

Tom Cruise gives me the willies nowadays, have younot noticed his freaky vacant eyes?

ColdComfortFarm · 29/09/2010 09:44

Oh, I've met quite a few Hollywood actors Tokyo, and I beg to differ!

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 29/09/2010 09:49

I watched the programme about Scientology last night and was baffled by the cross being used on their buildings etc. Do they align themselves with Christians?

maduggar · 29/09/2010 09:50

mrsgordonfreeman - even worse is Katie Holmes! She look sliek a zombie, not the attractive 32 year old she should be :(

Snorbs · 29/09/2010 09:51

Some critics of scientology particularly in the US have been followed, had their private property broken into, had false accusations levelled against them, been harrassed and intimidated. Websites containing criticisms have been subjected to serious attempts to shut them down. Their even worse than the Steiner zealots.

But fuck 'em. Scientology is a dangerous scam disguised as a cult. I had a close friend who developed mental health issues. His family was very heavily involved in scientology in the UK. He didn't get the help he desperately needed largely because of scientology's view of psychiatry. He subsequently killed himself.

maduggar · 29/09/2010 09:52

looks like a* excuse my typing Blush

BaggedandTagged · 29/09/2010 09:53

if you want to find a real life scientologist, just hang around the lanes in brighton. i almost guarantee that you'll be apprached by someone offering "free personality tests". that's them.

maduggar · 29/09/2010 09:53

snorbs their dismissal of MH issues is disgusting and very damaging to a lot of people :(

TVGardeningFan · 29/09/2010 10:06

I like the irony in their claim that psychiatry is an 'industry driven entirely by profit'. Nothing like Scientology then. They even run a museum Psychiatry: An Industry of Death

Snorbs · 29/09/2010 10:23

L Ron Hubbard didn't like psychiatrists because they wouldn't agree with him that he was a Truly Great Guy.

His records from his Navy career are illuminating. Not least the difference between what scientology's history says (he was a war hero, badly injured in combat, sank a Japanese submarine) and the official Navy version (he was a mediocre officer, didn't really have any combat experience, and the submarine didn't exist).

allbie · 29/09/2010 11:42

It's all to do with how needy you are. Some people need to 'belong' and then mix in all the 'wow, we love you' shit and bingo! You are family...then start the fear of separation and mind games with a hefty amount of control and you have a religion. Call the religion whatever you like and make 'em pay to support their 'new family' and get them completely under the spell. That just about covers it all...intelligence doesn't really figure, just your 'neediness'.

mrsgordonfreeman · 29/09/2010 12:36

The cross is just a logo: probably designed to look religious rather than having any significance.

They are not connected or aligned to any mainstream religions.

Heracles · 29/09/2010 13:00

It's no more mental than any other organized belief system. Give 'em time and they'll try their best to rack up the weight of casualties the currently established cults have achieved.

droves · 29/09/2010 13:31

My old friend got involved in a uk faction of the scientologists because they offered her a way to heal herself. (she has a terminal inherited condition , and was just diagnosed and told she had 10 years Sad)

The things she told me was "operating thaton", that they had a boat that the members can go to for dianettics .

There is levels that you have to move up in the "cult" and you can only self heal when you get to the highest level ....seriously she was told that it could cure her , can cure anything even cancer...Angry. She cried when she told me she was going to die because she couldnt afford to go on the boat and have dianettics/auditing.

She wont read magazines or watch news ,or use internet.
And would often try and convert me to scientology`s way of "thinking".
I made the mistake of telling her they were exployting (spell) her , and that they were nutjobs.
...she stopped talking to me .

Im angry about this because they have destroyed this vunerable persons chance of enjoying the time she has left.
EVIL CULT.

proudnglad · 29/09/2010 13:38

Have been trying to name change to Tom Cruise for last 10 minutes.

Computer said no.

Would have been hilaaarious, too.

Morloth · 29/09/2010 13:40

Why should they justify themselves? As long as no-one is forced to join then who gives a flying fuck?

Morloth · 29/09/2010 13:43

Are the scientologists the people I now see about the place with little card tables and orange boxes? Or is that someone else?

NonnoMum · 29/09/2010 14:53

To answer a question from earlier...

I think Scientologists are very much a sect/cult. I know a fair bit about the major world religions and Scientology doesn't even come close...

Ladder · 29/09/2010 14:58

Anyway, wtf was wrong with L-Rons teeth? Did he have any bottom teeth or what. He spoke in a peculiar way. Gave me the jitters just watching him.
