I definitely would.

Maybe twice.

OP posts:
Theresaholeinyourmind · 19/10/2010 16:26

Yes, Flowers, it was in a whole series, including the original Pride and Prejudice.
My very first RA sighting, too, just think!

ASmallBunchofFlowers · 19/10/2010 16:33

What, the Pride and Prejudice with the wet shirt scene?

Theresaholeinyourmind · 19/10/2010 17:17

The very same... Some other stuff too, Dickens and Hardy and Vanity Fair. Doing their bit for Culture.

ASmallBunchofFlowers · 19/10/2010 17:36

Have we had our yet?

Theresaholeinyourmind · 19/10/2010 17:47

Oh lordy...
I'd better take a quick dose of Emily Dickinson...

Heart, we will forget him,
You and I, tonight!
You must forget the warmth he gave,
I will forget the light.

When you have done pray tell me,
Then I, my thoughts, will dim.
Haste! ?lest while you?re lagging
I may remember him!

ASmallBunchofFlowers · 19/10/2010 20:19

Emily Dickinson. Wow. I always thought that this thread had intellectual depths. My favourite ED poem has long been this one ....

Success is counted sweetest
By those who ne'er succeed.
To comprehend a nectar
Requires sorest need.

Not one of all the purple Host
Who took the Flag today
Can tell the definition
So clear of Victory

As he defeated-dying
On whose forbidden ear
The distant strains of triumph
Burst agonized and clear!

.... although I'm not sure how it can be applied to Mr Thornton who does, in the end, find romantic and business success.

Theresaholeinyourmind · 20/10/2010 14:08

I am afraid I am about to lower the intellectual tone of this thread as I have just had Lucas North delivered to my door and am waiting for an opportune moment to unwrap him.

I had to laugh at the tattoo thread btw, I was wondering how long it would be before someone mentioned him. Grin

So --which of the audio books would you recommend as the very very best if you just had to choose just one?

Redeeming myself a tad, another bit of ED, for Mr T.

Let me not mar that perfect dream

By an auroral stain,

But so adjust my daily night

That it will come again.

ASmallBunchofFlowers · 20/10/2010 14:54

We seem to have scared everyone else off, theresaholeinyourmind.

I was about to go and do Something Useful and I've just wasted another five minutes looking at that tattoo thread. At least nobody suggested licking them. You are welcome, I think, to Lucas as long as Mr Thornton can be mine.

I don't have any of the audio books. I would, though, buy Clarissa if it were available. Which it seems it isn't.

Am loving the ED quotes and will leave you this by Wendy Cope

Higgledy-piggledy
Emily Dickinson
Liked to use dashes
Instead of full stops.

Nowadays, faced with such
Idiosyncrasy,
Critics and editors
Send for the cops.

Theresaholeinyourmind · 20/10/2010 15:09

Whoah, hold your horses, Flowers, I am reserving judgment on Lucas as Spooks is new to me.
Love the pome. :) I myself am over-addicted to the good old ...
Thanks for talking to me in the empty room. Where has everybody else gone indeed? I didn't think we were the scariest contributers.

ASmallBunchofFlowers · 20/10/2010 15:16

Ah, sorry, hadn't realised. I (wrongly) thought that you were already a Lucas devotee. I didn't think either that we were the scariest but of course that all depends on the definition of scary. Quoting ED is perhaps a tad poncey scary not entirely relevant to the thread. Wink

Do you have any other obsessions theatrical interests? My newfound exploration of Youtube has reminded me of this . Evidently, I am Very Old.

Perhaps we should try baiting the thread with vodka again?

Theresaholeinyourmind · 20/10/2010 16:02

How did I miss that one? Lovely! Great nose on him too, do I detect a theme?

No, I am truly sad, what with all these boy bands and young vampires etc about, I had quite given up on theatrical interests in favour of chocolate. Which is kinda ironic when you consider my favourite brand.

Sorry about the ED, I started it.
Hopefully on Monday there will be kitchen tables.

MrsLucasNorth · 20/10/2010 16:14

Hello - MrsLucasNorth here - stop offering my man up for grabs Smallbunch!!! Grin

ASmallBunchofFlowers · 20/10/2010 16:26

The nose is, so to speak, coincidental. What first drew my attention to Mr Be Still My Beating Heart Rickman was his voice, so that's probably the theme. I have seen him in the thee-at-er, doncha know. And a friend with an English degree gave her considered opinion on his portrayal of Captain Brandon in Sense and Sensibility as (and I quote) sex on a stick. My child is currently working though all the Harry Potter dvds so I have recently been reminded of Mr R's charms. There is here.

I too am far too old to appreciate boy bands and young vampires. And although I might (like Peter Pan) still believe in fairies I no longer believe in the Kitchen Table. 'Tis all a ruse to get susceptible ladies of a certain age to watch the telly, I am sure and, besides, I find the sight of Mr Thornton in his floppy shirt more thrilling.

Theresaholeinyourmind · 20/10/2010 17:48

Ah Flowers, but you notice how the mere mention of such furniture brought Mrs LN out of the woodwork

Don't worry Mrs LN,I'll be gentle.

Oooh, thee-at-ter, there's posh! And French! We are back to the culture again. Shame old Guy never gave us a bit of his Norman French.

Oooh, hello LeQueen. Good to have someone else on the thread as we seem to have scared off the OP. Confused

Yes, I know the S&S film wasn't very true to the novel but, then again, nor was the BBC version of North and South and I'm still hooked on both novel and adaptation. My friend was particularly impressed, I remember, by the sight of Colonel Brandon in knee boots. He looks rather good in uniform .

MrsLucasNorth · 20/10/2010 22:56

Since when has this been an Alan Rickman thread? Not that I'm complaining, - I'll happily take Mr Thornton off your hands if your loyalties are wavering smallbunch! Wink

Meow75 · 20/10/2010 23:05

I'm still coming in and out of this thread!!

Have been listening to RA reading Sylvester this week, one of Georgette Heyer's novels.

And I'm still waiting for the best time to put my N&S DVD on... I've been so good - it's still in the cellophane and I've had it since 25 Sept.

ASmallBunchofFlowers · 20/10/2010 23:07

This is not an Alan Rickman thread. We are just setting the work of Mr Armitage in context, by considering other notable performances by mature British actors - no callow youths here - of impressive profiles (both professional and facial).

Mr Thornton is mine. I leave you (I am assuming) younger ladies to arm-wrestle for Lucas' attentions. And then of course there's that gun-toting SAS chappie who might appeal to the more bloodthirsty types.

MrsRichardArmitage · 20/10/2010 23:39

Meow- what are you waiting for?
Don't be good, be bad. Bad with Mr Thornton I say!

ASmallBunchofFlowers · 20/10/2010 23:47

Meow - If you want a sneak preview, have a look . (This is a fan video, rather than an actual clip from the dvd, but don't look if you don't have any inkling of the ending).

MrsLucasNorth · 20/10/2010 23:47

I beg to differ MrsRA. I waited a couple of weeks to watch N &S after it arrived. Dh was out last Friday & Saturday so had 2 consecutive nights of Belgian Chocolate Haagen Daz & Mr Thornton and I have to say it was well worth the wait!

ASmallBunchofFlowers · 20/10/2010 23:50

Was I wrong to watch N&S with my husband in the room? Confused

cornishpasty · 21/10/2010 02:57

Theresahole, sorry tattoo link to RA was my fault. I couldn't resist after all this talk about him. Grin

cornishpasty · 21/10/2010 03:06
