Sodding quid for the trolley thing does my head in!

Emergency quid kept in the car was missing today. Had to queue up behind three others to get change. Once thoroughly frazzled, the Sainsbo's women had the temerity to try and sell me a trolley token. Why should I pay to use a trolley (at least you get the quid back and spend it - the token is a sunk cost that you will never recover, even if it is only a quid. Anyway I'd probably lose the fucker anyway).

Why can't trolleys be free to use like they used to be?

I'm sure we got our token free in our Boutny pack. It is sponsored by Persil...
I was surprised they had coin deposits in our yummymummy/university small town until I saw at least twenty Chinese students processing back to their halls of residence, each with their "own" Sainsbury's trolley. To be fair though, the woman at customer services says they always bring them back the following week...

DivineInspiration · 24/09/2010 20:59

Yes, it is annoying, but then so is anything which requires you to proffer correct change.

I always think trolley-deposits are a bit pointless. I mean, if you really wanted to nick a trolley, £1 is a bargain, isn't it? I'm fastidiously law-abiding, but I've often found myself on the fairly short bus ride home from Sainsbury's with my shopping bags thinking that it would actually have been cheaper to pinch the trolley to push my shopping home in than pay the bus fare.

Silver1 · 24/09/2010 21:08

I agree with DivineInspiration, and always feel affronted at having to pay £1, I take it as an implication they think I might steal their trolley. So I avoid the Sainsburys with the £1 for trolleys- in fact I avoid Sainsburys altogether!

VivaLeBeaver · 24/09/2010 21:19

I tried pushing a trolley past the line once as I was also curious as to how it worked, there was a special "rumble strip" type thing as well. Trolley pushed over it no problem. I think its a con to put people off trying it.

werewolf · 24/09/2010 21:19

I finally bought a trolley token and I keep it on my keyring. When I've got the trolley off the other trolleys, I can pull out the token again. Et voila, keys go in my pocket and I never lose the token.

Serendippy, I was at a Tesco once where they had the little shallow trolleys with child seats in. Brilliant, I thought, no more bending down, and promptly plonked DS into one.

Then I spent the entire shopping trip piling all the shopping increasingly precariously into the very end of the trolley, as if I put it anywhere near the handle/seat, DS would reach around and either eat it or throw it joyfully at the shelves like some kind of skittles game.

Now I know why they only have child seats on the deep trolleys.

To answer a question for some. The Tesco trollies have brakes that can be magnetically locked, the perimeter of the carpark has a buried metal loop which emits a low frequency and when the wheels go over the barrier the brake activates. To unlock them you need a little radio gadget which you click near the wheels. I used to work in Tesco and for those customers that swore/ were rude and abusive regularly we'd find it funny to walk past them and click the gadget in our pockets, locking their trolley in the aisle. When they complained after a big fuss, click and we'd demonstrate how the wheels were fine. To be repeated depending on their crime...

OTher ones work by rolling over lines which activate the lock, or vibration locks that activate as you go over a rough surface.

It drove me mad walking out of Tesco late, you could barely get out the gate for all the trolleys with locked wheels abandoned after they'd been taken as far as they could go.

stressheaderic · 24/09/2010 21:32

Our Tesco has those snazzy pull-along baskets, which I LOVE .

They got 50 in a month ago and are down to 10 due to theft. Who would?!

bettythebuilder · 24/09/2010 21:36

Leeds Bradford Airport would really make your blood pressure soar then, because the luggage trolleys there cost £1 and you don't get it back Shock

bettythebuilder · 24/09/2010 21:38

oops, so shocking it was worth posting twice Grin

shodatin · 24/09/2010 22:36

Last week's new trolley had a warning that it would stop suddenly if taken to edge of area, but at least it went in a nice straight line... I got a pretty token from Sue Ryder charity shop on a keyring gadget which I've clipped to handbag handle (always wanted one!)

MrsMadWriggle · 25/09/2010 00:30

There was me thinking that I was going to get a flaming for being so petty.

Think I might get a charity shop token. Don't mind one of those. I just resent buying one from the supermarket.

In some areas, where say there is a river close to the supermarket, the coin things are on to stop people dumping them in. If they have coin locks people return them to the trolley bays more often & there are less abandonded trollies to get lobbed in by yobbos!! In my town the environment agency put pressure on the Morrison store to change trollies to coin ones. It is a bit of a pain to find a quid but better than seeing trollies in our beautiful river!

BertieBotts · 25/09/2010 18:54

Thanks strawberry Grin I shall wonder no more!

Katiekitty · 25/09/2010 19:19

YaddahYaddahYaddah · 25/09/2010 19:26

Aren't those token thingies for charity? I'm sure i got one for giving a lady ?2 for breast cancer awarness and instead of a pin she offered me a token.

My local lidl has a sign up saying that that the trollies are electronically tag adn you will instantly explode is you try and take a trolley out of the boundry, or maybe it's an alarm will go off

Lougle · 25/09/2010 19:42

A 20p piece works too Smile

MoralDefective · 25/09/2010 19:57

I bought my fake quid from a charity shop....have to check but think it was 'help the aged'

poppymouse · 25/09/2010 21:37

It did piss me off, then one day I had a mare queuing up and trying to get a quid out while DS ran off into the store (18mo), they took pity on me and gave me a token they had lying around iirc they might even have fetched a trolley. Maybe they thought DS had SN, he was just being his usual boisterous self. I was so touched by the customer service I took the spare token back and bought one to put on my key ring. This was Morrisons.

DaftApeth · 25/09/2010 21:47

I'm pretty sure my keyring token came from a christmas cracker.

About the only useful thing that has!

ccfcblogger2k10 · 15/11/2010 03:02

ur all whinging lol there "locked" with coin locks for the following reasons which are to stop ppl or "students" walking off the carpark full of shopping (going across busy roads with trolleys full to the brim not safe & if that was to cause a accident that "idiot" wouldnt be responsible the onwers of the trolley would be )also mostly "LAZY" shoppers leaving them loose anywhere they was parked up in the car park which can can run into other innocent shoppers cars parked up causing damage to there cars) and so yes it is inconvienient but tuff but if ppl just took the extra time to put them away properly (lets face it uve walked round a supermarket doing shopping a few yards more wont kill u putting something away)

ccfcblogger2k10 · 15/11/2010 03:16

no excuses people for the few who think they are above respecting other peoples property i.e other shoppers veichiels or infact the store ur using there equipment baskets trolleys wheechairs n any other aids there so gracious to provide. i dnt blame any stores warehouses & establishments looking after its property at there customers inconvienience (the world we live in) :)

Mumcentreplus · 15/11/2010 03:19

Trolleys cost money...if i don't have a quid I ask the security guard ...
