Sodding quid for the trolley thing does my head in!

Emergency quid kept in the car was missing today. Had to queue up behind three others to get change. Once thoroughly frazzled, the Sainsbo's women had the temerity to try and sell me a trolley token. Why should I pay to use a trolley (at least you get the quid back and spend it - the token is a sunk cost that you will never recover, even if it is only a quid. Anyway I'd probably lose the fucker anyway).

Why can't trolleys be free to use like they used to be?

I hate shopping at iceland in town, you need £1 for trolley and £2 for car parking

(all refundable) but to be honest I never carry cash .... I tend to use plastic for everything these days ..... a bad do when you need 3 quid even to shop there

bellavita · 24/09/2010 19:11

Nooooooo withorwithout Grin. It is on my car keys yes, but on an extra loop and you pull the little clip back and it releases it (has a hole through it) - like one of those fastenings that you get on a chain or a bracelet where you pull the little lever back.

banana87 · 24/09/2010 19:12

Get a key chain with a trolley coin on it! It has worked great wonders for me as I always have my keys on me and therefore am always able to get a trolley!

smokinaces · 24/09/2010 19:17

My friend yesterday showed me that a key from a corned beef can works in them just as well as a £1 coin.

onepieceoflollipop · 24/09/2010 19:23

Your friend sounds great smokinaces.

I once met my cm in Morrisons. I had managed to find one pound coin but she hadn't. She was staggering round with a basket; in the basket was at least the contents of half a trolley. (she is very fit though) I did stop to apologise that I didn't have a spare pound.

Where I live it is rough (ish) and some of the supermarkets do charge.

Asda drove me mad...not only do you have to pay, but they have 2 different types of slots on the trolleys. Hmm so you have to find a "matching" trolley to return yours too.

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 24/09/2010 19:27

Some poor sod left one of those £1 tokens in a trolley once so I use that. It has a lovely four leaf clover on one side, wasn't very lucky for them though was it!

GrimmaTheNome · 24/09/2010 19:31

It pisses me off when I don't have a pound coin when I go to Sainsbury's - there never seems to be anyone on the customer service desk.

Where do you get the keyring things from?

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 24/09/2010 19:32

They sell them at the evil cigarette place, where they do the lottery.

southeastastra · 24/09/2010 19:33

i have lots of freebie tokens and just attach it to the keyring, really doesn't bother me. i suppose it makes sure you don't leave trolleys all over the place too.

NorbertDentressangle · 24/09/2010 19:36

If you buy one of those trolley coins buy it from a charity shop (most do them) then:

a)you've helped a charity
b)£1 is a small price to pay to avoid emptying the contents of your car and handbag to find a £1 followed by the time spent to queue up to get change.

I keep mine on the car keyring

BertieBotts · 24/09/2010 19:37

Our Asda doesn't charge, but the trolleys have a little gadget attached to one of the legs which makes the wheels lock up if you attempt to push it past a painted line.

All very swish, but it has been bugging me for ages, how does the trolley know??!

Local Tesco don't charge or have magic homing instinct trolleys but it's in a considerably nicer area. We used to pass it on the way back from the pub and end up using it to cart the drunkest person home in Blush We did take it back the next day though. Once Most of the time.

Pixel · 24/09/2010 19:40

You can use the tokens for other things too so they are worth £1. Dd has one attached to her swimming bag so she doesn't have to remember to keep a pound coin for the locker.

You need one for the Waitrose local in Nottingham Confused

sterrryerryoh · 24/09/2010 19:56

In my local Asda, you have to pay for parking (£1 - which you get back when you spend £2 or more at the checkout - which is a pisser if you?re going to the Post Office, which is also in Asda) AND you have to put a quid in the trolley. Admittedly you get them both back, but I never have 2 pound coins, even if I plan my shopping trip.

RamblingRosa · 24/09/2010 20:01

the £1 for trolley thing drives me mad too. I've got two Sainsbury's near me. One has trolleys that need £1 and one has free trolleys. I sometimes find myself driving to the one that's a bit further (and also bigger which means I end up spending more than I meant to) just because I don't have a sodding £1 in my purse.

I want one of those token keyring things now. Can you get them in Oxfam?

Spirael · 24/09/2010 20:11

Not sure about Oxfam, but I have an RSPCA token. :)

I also got a trolley token given to me free with my car, of all things!

GreenLillium · 24/09/2010 20:20

Bertie, you don't live in Boston do you? I've always wanted to see the trolley pushed past the line there, but never have (and never had the time to fool around to do it myself)!

Belle, had no idea Nottingham Waitrose charged for trolleys, it's so bloody small really that it hardly needs them (but very tasty).

onepieceoflollipop · 24/09/2010 20:29

re pushing the trolley over the "line". I think that what happens is the shop changes the surface for a few metres and it means that the wheels don't run smoothly over that area. If one really wanted to, it would be possible I imagine to lift the trolley over that surface and then it would be ok again.

Seona1973 · 24/09/2010 20:30

I have a token on my keys for trolleys - it is a Morrisons one and seems to fit most of the other trolleys too. I got it at the kiosk at morrisons.

Serendippy · 24/09/2010 20:32

I had to queue up the other day to get change for the trolley, carrying bloody heavy DD in my arms, yet when I got to the till was told that she couldn't open it without a transaction. Just my luck, the next person who came along had shopping for a family of 7 for 2 weeks. Stood waiting, shifting fatso DD from arm to arm. Halfway through scanning the checkout lady said, 'The small trolleys are free, why don't you get one of those?' And do what with my child?!?! AAAAAAAAAAAARGGGGGGGGGHHH!

geraldinetheluckygoat · 24/09/2010 20:33

I got a free trolley token with plenty kitchen roll

BertieBotts · 24/09/2010 20:44

No, not Boston, Leamington.

lollipop good idea, but no, it's just a single painted line like road markings (so slightly raised) No weird surface at all. I wondered if it was something to do with magnets?
