I was horribly scared of dogs when I was young, I still am a bit but I can live with the fear!

What annoys me the most is people who mock others for being scared of dogs but are themselves afrais of spiders/bugs.

I would much rather be faced with the biggest of house spiders who can do me no harm than a large animal with strong sharp teeth who, in the wrong circumstances, could potentially mame me.

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 22/09/2010 10:36

Spikey - that is exactly the sort of attitude that gets people's backs up and hardens the negative attitudes towards dogs.

The OP is asking for a bit of consideration from dog owners - and as a dog owner myself, I think that is perfectly reasonable. If I was walking my dog when taking my children to school, I would make sure I was thoughtful of other people - keeping the dog away from a narrow entrance gate to the school grounds, for example, or keeping the dog well under control so that it didn't frighten children.

If anyone is acting 'entitled', it is you, spikey, not the people asking for a bit of give and take!!

midori1999 · 22/09/2010 10:46

I think the way the OP was worded is likely to get dog owners backs up. It seems now that even responsible dog owners who have their dogs under control aren't allowed out in public with them, just in case they get in someone elses way... Hmm

FWIW, I don't want people to pet my dogs when I take them out. I am walking them, I am training them and I am not in the slightest bit interested in anyone saying hello to them or interrupting my training thankyou very much. I get really fed up that people assume all dog owners want everyone else ot love their dogs. I actually don't give a shit, I love my dogs and how anyone else feels means nothing to me.

spikeycow · 22/09/2010 10:47

They are not asking for give or take. They are talking about reporting others for doing nothing wrong. THEY have a problem, not the dog. So what is the owner being reported for? It's truly pathetic. And dog owners have to see the same crap on here every time they log on.

spikeycow · 22/09/2010 10:48

I am entitled to take my dog for a walk without being pestered.

FranSanDisco · 22/09/2010 10:52

Never used to get dogs at the school gate but now cos one person brought theirs everyone wants to bring one Hmm; it's like Crufts. Ds pesters me everyday to have a dog now.

annec555 · 22/09/2010 10:53

I don't think anyone is advocating keeping dogs hidden away, Spikey. But the fact remains that some peop,e are scared, some people are allergic and some people simply don't like dogs. These people certainly are entitled to go about their business without being forced to confront their fear/dislike by people who think they are silly. It is perfectly feasible for people to keep themselves and their children away from dogs that they see out and about, and for dog owners not to insist on parking their dog right in a place where people are going to have to take deliberate evasive action.

I don't allow my child to throw himself on passing dogs as he would be quite keen to do. I therefore expect dog owners to stop their dogs from charging at my child.

It is about respecting other people's boundaries. I sometimes feel as though people who dislike dogs are treated as though they are fair game to have dogs placed in their personal space to make them 'get over it'.

Who is talking about reporting others? I didn't see anyone say tat.

AllNightMilkBar · 22/09/2010 10:56

I'm sick of hearing ALL dog owners tarred with the same brush as a result of the inconsiderate minority. I am a dog owner, and I am responsible, I DO take my dog to the school to drop off and collect, but I tie her well out of the way of the gates. It does actually make good sense to take dogs into these environments so they learn how to behave correctly. Like midori, I don't want people touching her and saying hello without checking with me - children also need to be taught how to behave sensibly round dogs, as much as dogs need to be taught how to behave around children.

zazen · 22/09/2010 11:05

I'm allergic to cats and some dogs, and I HATE to see them at the school gates.

I get an immediate and severe asthma attack when I'm near them. Spikeycow an other dog owners, remember, I am entitled not to have an asthma attack just because you're too lazy to keep your dog tied up away from where I will HAVE to walk!!

You wouldn't shove a peanut sandwich in a kid's face for fear of an allergic response - why let an animal do the same?

Keep them away from the school gates, where you have to run the gauntlet to get by.

Tie them up far away from where everyone goes if you feel entitled to bring them.

Remember they are an allergen to some people. Keep them away from areas where everyone has to file past. Think of them as peanuts.

I'm sure your sense of entitlement to owning and walking a dawg does not include making other people ill, and possibly putting their life at risk.
Think about it.

spikeycow · 22/09/2010 11:06

I don't take my dogs to school. I'm just sick of the attitude that dogs can't go out and be seen in public

spikeycow · 22/09/2010 11:07

Anyway I'm hiding this. And I'm telling Val off you all Grin

Your all mad!

Apart from the dog lovers.

I'm with spikeycow.

DaftApeth · 22/09/2010 11:18

No-one is saying that dogs can't be taken out and have to be hidden away. Neither is anyone saying that all dog owners are irresponsible.

I just think there should be consideration on both sides.

Fear of dogs does not always manifest itself in hysteria and screaming. If you can be in the same room as a rat, you do not have a very strong phobia, spikeycow (appropraite name, btw, for this thread)

zazen · 22/09/2010 11:19

I can see you both in sun filled meadows gallopming with your four legged friends, Andrex stylee, and good on you!!

But tying up the dogs at the school gates is a no no.

Threelittleducks · 22/09/2010 11:20

Personally, I feel very sorry for the dog - imagine being at knee height of folk who stampede in and out of school gates, randomly patting you, bashing you with bags, standing on your toes etc and being unable to get out of the road.

Poor wee dug.

Owner sounds crazy and is the kind of person who will be very astonished when her dog retaliates.

Which of course (of COURSE!) will be the dog's fault, eh? Hmm

zazen · 22/09/2010 11:20

gallopming? gallomphing I think I meant!!

zipzap · 22/09/2010 11:23

I would also hazard a guess that if the dog is tied to a gatepost the the owner is away from the dog and not there to move it. You don't know how long they are likely to be until they get back - you don't want to be standing around for 5-10 mins making you late for school just because somebody is so inconsiderate as to tie their dog so it gets in everybody's way.

nikkershaw and others with problems - could you ask the head teacher to put a sign up on the gates saying no dogs allowed, followed up with info in the next news letter home to say that dogs are not allowed to be tied up on the gate and instead should be tied up at xyz point if they must be brought on the school run.

Defintitely one time when they could invoke health and safety Grin - especially if they are a school that take nut allergies seriously, they can't then argue against taking dog allergies seriously!

Vallhala · 22/09/2010 11:24

Spikey, you don't need me to tell 'em, you're doing a great job.

On the subject of dogs, have a look at my profile pictures. It takes just 10 seconds.

The three below the first picture are my own dogs, the last one was one of our foster dogs. Yes... OUR foster dogs. My 13 and 15 yo DDs, who are rescue volunteers, have lived with dogs since day one - my own Staffie cross, German Shepherds and the like and various foster dogs, including Staffies, German Shepherds and Greyhounds.

ChooksAway · 22/09/2010 11:27

So where does someone like me stand on this?
I'm a (responsible) dog owner, and a dog lover, but I don't think dogs should be tied up at a school gate at all, and actually Spikey, if Val comes along, I don't think she would approve of a dog being put in a position where up to 70 people (several of those much smaller than the dog) are having to push past.
Apart from being cruel to people with allergies/phobias or even just a mild dislike of dogs, what about the poor dog in question?
