Given the conspiracy thread, moon landings?

I have an friend who is an academic and a scientist. He swears the moon landings simply couldn't have taken place given the technology in 1969, asteroid belts? Apparently the 'ship' simply couldn't have got there, this was the era before advanced computers and so on.

Don't most people believe we did go to the moon?

Which are the more 'believable' conspiracy theories?

I think faking the films would have been very difficult at the time. Especially the low gravity stuff. Plus, the data from the craft has probably been studied by hundreds of people over the years. None of the scientists seem to question it.

bumpsnowjustplump · 17/09/2010 16:18

But which one is meant to have not happened as man has been to the moon six times..
Apollo 11, 1969, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, Michael Collins
Apollo 12, 1969, Charles (Pete) Conrad, , Alan Bean, Richard Francis Gordon
Apollo 14, 1971, Alan Shepard, Edgar Mitchell, Stuart Roosa
Apollo 15, 1971, David Scott, James Irwin, Alfred Worden
Apollo 16, 1972, John Young, Charles Duke, Thomas Mattingly
Apollo 17, 1972, Eugene Cernan, Harrison Schmitt, Ronald Evans

Apollo 13 did not land due to a mechanical problem that nearly killed the crew. The 3rd man listed in each mission did not walk on the Moon, but instead stayed in orbit around the Moon in the command module while the other two landed in the lunar module

I have a feeling there isn't a huge amount of footage.

I heard that the Chinese were racing to get there first? Was it the Chinese or Japanese? What stopped them visiting after the Americans had been? Why didn't anyone go back in the years that followed?

Can you tell I have two brothers who are nasa nut jobs...

stillbobbysgirl · 17/09/2010 16:21

Ooh I like that angle Cortina! A friend of a friend worked for the Fayeds in some kind of admin/pa post at the time, and Dodi and his father were well known letches who treated female staff as property. Dodi also v fond of the charlie. Surely any drug debts would not have been a problem for them?

I completley believe Marylyn Monroe was murdered, and I have some ishoos over 9/11 (building 7 etc).

Lauriefairycake · 17/09/2010 16:22

"Why didn't anyone go back"?

That ones easy - it's a feckin' dead rock of minimal scientific interest and it's enormously expensive to visit it

bumpsnowjustplump · 17/09/2010 16:23

but they did go back 5 times!!!!

Cortina · 17/09/2010 16:24

Yes, bumps :)

Why not go back after 1972? Surely if they went so many times in the early 70s they would have begun to think about establishing a base/going to the other side of the moon/conducting more experiments? Why did they recently fire a rocket at the moon rather than land?

Why not land again and film it, properly this time, for all to see?

What about this radiation belt?

I don't believe it for a second.

Can't believe someone beat me to it with the Clangers link Sad

Actually I really don't think people landed on the moon, no.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 17/09/2010 16:26

I think they are thinking about going back, aren't they? Wasn't the NASA budget cut which made further missions too expensive?

Cortina · 17/09/2010 16:26

That's exactly what I heard Bobby. Allegedly he owed money to the wrong people, hence being a 'marked man' according to my client. I thought it an interesting angle that she believed Diana to be a random casualty.

UnquietDad · 17/09/2010 16:26

They didn't go back after the 1970s because the money was invested in other aspects of the space programme. I think they realised that it's just a rock.

bumpsnowjustplump · 17/09/2010 16:27

I think the reason for not going to the Moon again was the high cost and danger, combined with the public loosing interest in the program

UnquietDad · 17/09/2010 16:28

That's pretty much it bumps, what you said and what I said.

Cortina · 17/09/2010 16:30

Chickens, Laurie I would have thought many would be interested enough to warrant a trip back. After all it's the only 'planet' that man can actually walk on etc. Be interesting to see them spending a few nights there and travelling around all the different parts in a buggy or something?

Why didn't we go on to establish a base after the 5 visits? A good jumping off point for further space exploration? Seems that we didn't advance as quickly as we might after this point in the very early 70s (40 odd years ago)!

Was the budget suddenly cut?

xposts unquietdad..

Ripeberry · 17/09/2010 16:49

Mars is the future now. Until they figure out the small problem of space particles, but they think they can do it with a big magnet in the middle of the spacecraft to make a 'deflector shield'.

Maybe my grandchildren will get to see Mars landings Grin

nikkershaw · 17/09/2010 16:50

but there is the mir space station still isn't there? there's nothing much on the moon at all is there.

those didn't one of the astronauts see an alien supposedly Grin

Cortina · 17/09/2010 16:50

Space particles? Why are they a problem for a Mars landing but not a moon landing?

OP posts:
IMoveTheStars · 17/09/2010 17:49

whoops!! when I said 'why haven't we been back' I meant since the original missions.

My understanding of this (from DP) is that it was the original 1969 landing that was staged..

I'll badger him about it later and see what he says :)

claig · 17/09/2010 17:59

They won't go to Mars, it is just a way of getting a huge budget which the people pay for out of their taxes, rather than allocating it to schools and health.

Don't believe the Dodi thing. Nobody would dare risk unintentionally harming Diana just to get Dodi. The retribution would be immense.

Hammy02 · 17/09/2010 18:01

My favourite is that some people still believe that Prince Harry is Charles' son. Class. Although there can't be many people that still believe that...can there?

BoneyBackJefferson · 17/09/2010 18:02

They fire a laser at the moon every month which is reflected back by a mirror.

invisibleink · 17/09/2010 18:10

Has anyone other than the Americans WALKED on the moon?..actually landed?

claig · 17/09/2010 18:24

no no one, and no one is even trying to get there, with all of the modern technology, much better than the primitive stuff they had in the late sixties. Makes you wonder, how they managed it then, and why no one seems to be able to do it now?
