When did you get your (child's) bottom out?

Today my friend, freshly glowing from the superiority complex assumed after potty training her 2.7 year old son in 2-3 weeks, (can you tell I'm green with envy?) started to encourage me to potty train my DD.

History: I potty trained DD's1&2 at 2.10 months and it was a nightmare with one of them (she's only just about truly dry now at 6.10). For me it has definitely been the worst thing about being a parent.

My strategy was to wait. DD is due to start nursery in January and I was even hoping that they might do it for me.

So I was prepared to wait until she could demand to go on the loo before starting potty training. She's currently 2.10 and sometimes does a wee on the potty but isn't really that bothered.

My friend thinks that because it has to be done at some point, I should get on and do it and ultimately it's a win-win situation but I can't begin to tell you how much I don't want to do this.

Am I being unreasonable to wait simply because I can't be bothered and am a bit scared?

As well as a flaming(should you feel I deserve one I'd also like to know when you potty trained (especially if it was older than 3 and if you wished you'd done it sooner, or if you let someone else do it).

Yes cat64, I know that (am a secondary teacher), but the OP is talking about nursery and I was under the impression that the ratios at pre-school were different - it's 1:8 in the 3-4 room at my ds's nursery (that's a private one though, so am prepared to be corrected if I'm wrong! Smile

YANBU. DD1 trained herself at 2.3 when she wanted to do it (took her nappy off one morning and that was that). I waited until she made the decision and I will do the same with DD2. I have friends who've tried to force the issue, and had endless weeks of puddles (and worse!) all over the floor and pull-ups for every trip out of the house. The one friend has been attempting to train her DS (now 2.6) for three months and he's still having at least 2 accidents every day.

We had all carpets so decided to wait until we were on holiday in France with tiled floors when dd was about 2.7. I can remember one day when she announced in a very serious voice at breakfast that 'knickers closed today' and went back to pullups for a while. I don't really remember it being any sort of problem.

We had a potty in the bathroom and another in the downstairs loo, and I can remember sitting her on it before her bath and making a game out of 'what noise does a wee make' and making a sort of whistling/sss noise which encouraged her to go. She went through an amusing stage of naming her poos - I can remember elephant and tiger poos. However she did want her bottom wiped for ages, though.

Now, we have a different problem, and that is getting her to try and work out when her next period will be, and then to remember to go to the loo often enough.
