the next time we go out because regardless of which seat we put him in he manages to get out the shoulder straps....and I have tried a lot of seats!!!

The seat he has now is the best one ever but he cabn still get out of the shoulder straps.

YABU
Superglue ruins clothing.
You can buy really really strong Velcro you know :)

I personally would go for the electrical tape wrapped around the car seat (less likely he will peel himself off that way, you see Grin).

taking superglue off

You can get those chest plate things, have you tried them?

TheLadyEvenstar · 14/09/2010 23:23

tuts @ chippin!!! I was enjoying the idea of velcroing and electrical taping him into his seat!!!

Ok so where do I get one Chippin?

It seems to be a major design flaw in car seats. Why can't they change the harness design so that the arms are more difficult to wriggle free? I understand the reason for having just one central button to undo, negating the chest clip that they have in the US and Canada, but Confused as to why they haven't thought of something better entirely yet.

Well aside from the impact shield type design, I like that one, makes much more sense :)

Ive got the Houdini clip and DS2 aged 2 can undo that and the wriggle his arms out. Am going to make one myself tomorrow using heavy duty plastic clips used on dog coats!

Thelady - i feel your pain. Had to resort to cable-tying DS2 into his seat on the M6 as he "wanted to drive like Daddy"!

Mishy1234 · 15/09/2010 08:26

I've seen threads on this before (it seems to be a very common problem!) and have seen people say that the chest clips are illegal in the UK and that's why you can't buy them here.

Not 100% sure, but I would check it out before you buy one.

borderslass · 15/09/2010 08:29

I used to use reins in ds's car seat as he always got out of the straps.

Kathyjelly · 15/09/2010 08:42

I feel for you. My DS who's two can undo the clip and get out of the seat completely. We're on seat four but he always works them out.

My DP wants to tie the straps together but without a quick release mechanism I'm not happy. Cable ties present the same problem. I talked to Britax who couldn't suggest anything.

Borders, how did you attach the reins to the seat? Could you get him out quickly in an emergency?

mamasmissionimpossible · 15/09/2010 08:46

My dd (2) is a little houdini in the car seat as well. I'm marking my place here for ideas.

ChippingIn · 15/09/2010 09:57

Mishy I don't know if they are or not. However, if they aren't in NZ they can't be unsafe - so I'd rather use them and risk breaking a law and have some chance of keeping a DC in the car seat.

Mind you, once they've hit 2 and can undo them, I'd go for punishment rather than trying to find another method of keeping them in - at 2 they are plenty old enough to understand NO and consequences of doing stuff they aren't allowed to do.

TLE maybe you should book me in for a few car trips! :)

Borderslass - what if you had had an accident? That would have made it very difficult for the rescue services to have got him out??

Kathy I would just get very cross with him. I would smack his bottom if telling him off didn't work, because that's a lot safer than tying things around the straps that aren't quick release.

borderslass · 15/09/2010 09:59

DS has special needs and it was police advice as he was climbing out of the seat.

DanceInTheDark · 15/09/2010 10:01

I think they are illegal because it makes the child difficult to get out if they are being rescued after an accident.

My 2 year old was the same, he wanted to be like his brothers. He is fine with a 3 point seatbelt. (His seat is one that converts from a 5 point harness to being able t use a 3 point seatbelt)

DanceInTheDark · 15/09/2010 10:09

I can't find the full link but 'American law allows a connecting strap between the shoulder harnesses but European Union Legislation does not. It states that a adult must be able to release a child from a safety seat in a single action Adding a shoulder harness connector would require two'

BuntyPenfold · 15/09/2010 10:21

It's such a common problem, you would think some genius could come up with something.

I know of a child who undoes the seatbelt, climbs out and whacks her mother around the head as she drives.
She can only use the car with another adult in the back.
It is awful.
