to think 8 out of 10 Mumsnetters do not recommend weaning with Kenwood, actually?

I don't. Do you?

And I think it's misleading to state that "It's important to ensure your baby is introduced to a balanced diet through a gradual process ? milk is followed by smooth purées, which gradually gets thickened into mashed and chunky textures, and on to whole pieces, once your baby starts chewing." OK, so they've got a product to sell but purees are not the only way to wean a baby and certainly not the best way.

Oooooh, I want to see the advert now. Are you sure you weren't missing the smallprint somewhere op?

Serendippy · 12/09/2010 22:23

Don't know what the legal view is, but is like saying '8 out of 10 dentists use...' They have not asked ever dentist but have asked a few and so are allowed to use it as a representative figure. Which can be very misleading, which is why people should not be so suckered in by adverts.

thisisyesterday · 12/09/2010 22:26

i can believe it

if they asked mumsnetters to product test a blender with regards to weaning, the people who applied to do so wouldn' thave been BLW would they? they'd have been doing purees

so it's likelt that if the product was ok then they'd recommend it for weaning on purees

Aitch · 12/09/2010 22:27

that is a bloody disgrace, if that's right. regardless of how people wean on here (and we are a disproportionately blw-tastic site) there is no fucking way that 8 out of ten of US are saying kenwood is the way forward.
i'm going to report the thread to see if there is an official verdict on this. (knowing that sunday night not good for an answer).

TheHouseofMirth · 12/09/2010 22:29

No, when you click through it does clearly say 100 Mumsnetters took part in the product test but I that's a relatively small sample. It is just like those cosmetic ads where they say 8/10 women said their skin improved etc etc. I guess this annoys me more because it's using the word mumsnetters. I truly doubt a larger sample would have returned the same result and I resent them implying the best way to wean your baby is with one of their machines when most of the Mumsnetters I know do BLW!

Thanks, I was not sure if I was BU (or at least a bit petty and picky!) but I do hate the way advertising sets out to manipulate people and I'm glad I've pointed it out. I'm off to bed now...

JustAnotherManicMummy · 12/09/2010 22:32

I would not recommend a Kenwood for weaning but I am prepared to recommend it for cake making and other prep if they will supply it and build the necessary extension to my kitchen to house the behemouth

Aitch · 12/09/2010 22:32

i see. annoying.

swampster · 12/09/2010 22:33

I vote we do a poll too and see what the true figures are.

nameymcnamechange · 12/09/2010 22:34

Oh. I think people are more savvy about adverts than you are giving them credit for tbh.

ChutesTooNarrow · 12/09/2010 22:36

Hmm Ooh I am annoyed about this. I did the product test and I stated when I applied I intended to BLW - which I did. In my review I said it was a lovely whizzy blender but it was pointless for weaning (really pointless, other than for hoummous and soups in my humble opinion) and that I wouldn't recommend it for that purpose. I mainly use it for making cakes.

memoo · 12/09/2010 22:36

Just for the record, I got a free hand blender in the product test and I definately wouldn't reccomend it!

Aitch · 12/09/2010 22:37

i don't think that's the point, namey.

strandedatsea · 12/09/2010 22:42

Ok this is how they word the question: "Given the choice would you rather use a Kenwood blender or a rusty old hand held egg whisk to puree food for your baby" I imagine most people would chose the blender. There will be small print somewhere, I am sure Kenwood are savvy enough to cover their arses.

I have to say I have been pondering this myself for a while though and agree it does seem misleading and perhaps should be reported. They could change it to: Eight out of Ten mothers would chose Kenwood over another brand...or something.

PaulineCampbellJones · 12/09/2010 22:50

I got a hand blender to test. I answered positively in the survey but don't recall saying anywhere I recommend it over anything else. I made some soup and some hummus and grinding down of porridge but did mainly BLW. Good little gadget though.

CakeandRoses · 12/09/2010 22:57

Oh, that's really naughty of them.

Another BLWer here.

Ixia · 12/09/2010 23:04

I weaned with Braun, not Kenwood Smile, but knowing what I know now, I'd BLW.

ShowOfHands · 12/09/2010 23:08

1 out of 1 posters named ShowOfHands have feck all clue who Ken Wood is. He certainly didn't pop round while we were enjoying the weaning process.

Carriemumsnet · 13/09/2010 17:17

Hi there, thanks for all your comments on this thread and sorry the ad has annoyed you.

You're quite right, it is misleading - and we've learnt some useful lessons for any future similar collaborations on what folks can and can't/ should and shouldn't do with product feedback data.

FWIW When asked :Would you recommend your Kenwood product to another parent who is looking to start weaning? 80% said yes out of a total of 90 testers, so the products did do well, but the way the ad was phrased was certainly not great.

Equally we had a lot of to-ing and fro-ing about inclusion of BLW in a leaflet Kenwood are producing which includes some feedback about the products as well as MN tips and recipes. We're looking in to why the copy we approved for that leaflet (which includes BLW) wasn't used on the Kenwood page on the site -possibly a mistake our end so apologies and Blush

Thanks again for bringing it all to our attention and apologies for the consternation. The ads should be off the site by midnight tonight.

OOH

Can I join in? i am perfectly willing to say that as a mumsnetter I use Kenwood to prepare ALL my daughter's food if they give me a freebie kitchenaid lookylikey food mixer

And there was I thinking that that only way that Kenwood could take the stress and mess out of weaning was to provide me with a nanny and cleaner.... Grin

nickelbabe · 13/09/2010 17:31

i wouldn't (i like the BLW way)

but my mum used to make purees in the blender of our Kenwood Chef.
hth.

PinkElephant73 · 13/09/2010 17:37

Why do you need a blender when baby food comes in jars anyway Confused

I'll get my coat.
