To not CRB check my friends

julybutterfly · 12/09/2010 16:36

It's DD's birthday in a few weeks. We're doing the whole hall hire, bouncy castle etc party. DD wanted a facepainter. the prices were ridiculous so I've asked a few artistic friends to do it. But I've had a couple of other parents ask me if my friends have been CRB checked! AIBU to think they're being OTT?

OP posts:
electra · 12/09/2010 17:32

When my dds have attended parties it has never occurred to me to think of whether the parents or anyone else are CRB checked! At one of my daughter's schools it is quite common for parents to randomly stay and help. Yes, very silly imo - YANBU.

Pan · 12/09/2010 17:34
Shock

I have new ipod connector so I can sing loudly to my tunes and embarass dd when she is in. But it won't stick at 95.7FM.

Tried begging. You're right. The only language it will understand is violence. And I'm not CRB'd.

Actually I am!! The 'advanced one! Doesn't cover naughty radios though.Smile

KEAWYED · 12/09/2010 17:34

If they are your friends helping it is totally OTT and I'm embarrassed for them even asking you!!!

elphabaisgreen · 12/09/2010 17:35

They are being very silly unless you are employing them.

As it is they are simply family friends helping you out at your child's party. There is no obligation for them to be CRB checked, they may as well ask if you are checked, or Granny handing round the sandwiches is CRB checked.

I am a CRB checked entertainer and this is ridiculous.

ChippingIn · 12/09/2010 17:57

For the love of all things holy - WTF is this country coming to?

Mniemmniem · 12/09/2010 18:02

It's PC gorn maaaaaaad! Grin

prettybird · 12/09/2010 18:09

Thnak goodness all of ds' friends are sensible :)

Having said that, one of the other parents on the Out of School Care Board that dh used to be one, refused to come to a Board Meeting (that didn't need to be public) at our house 'cos I hadn't been CRB checked. With one exception, the kids that were going to be there play every day together at school and had been to our house - so to them, it would have just been a play date. Hmm Instead, they had to hold it at the school (paying for the let) and pay for the mobile creche to come in. :(

whatkatydidathome · 12/09/2010 18:19

Are they intending to do the face painting alone with the children behind closed doors and naked? If not then I can't see why a CRB check is necessary.

DontCallMeBaby · 12/09/2010 19:03

They're not going to be in unsupervised contact with the children. They're not going to be in regular contact with the children. And even if they were, you could waive the requirement to do a CRB based on them being well known and trusted to you.

The other parents probably think they're being terribly responsible and conscientious, so if you tell them that a CRB is not required under the circumstances, they may well be okay with it.

Of course you're still free to think they're twats.

giraffesCantDanceInBrokenHeels · 12/09/2010 19:12

yaNbu Shock

LeoniPoni · 12/09/2010 19:19

Ha! Brilliant! Where do people get these weird notions?? I like Pan's idea of the crayoned CRB.

I can't wait to get to the point in society when we are sending photocopies of ours, DP's, the clown's and the bloke who puts up the bouncy castle CRBs in with the invitations.

I'm off to insist the inlaws get their CRBs before they take DS for a walk. Grin

shootfromthehip · 12/09/2010 19:22

FFS. Honestly. Seriously. YANBU. Angry

Snobear4000 · 12/09/2010 19:30

You need the CRBs. Even if you keep your eyes on the facepainters for every damn second of the party, they could be using a type of technology called "rape paint", the details of which are too disturbing to reveal here today.

pigletmania · 12/09/2010 19:33

They are being vvvvvu indeed, my goodness what has things got to now. Its people like this who think that all adults are paedophiles. You trust them right? Well then if they are not happy than they dont have to come to the party.

LeoniPoni · 12/09/2010 19:34

HA! Rape paint!

My DP is notoriously hard to make laugh and he actually chuckled at that! Brill!

BubbaAndBump · 12/09/2010 19:42

Fucking ridiculous.

arses · 12/09/2010 19:47

I went on one of those darkside netmums meet-a-mum "dates" last week. I even (sssh!) went back to hers for coffee. On the first date!

Feeling sordid and guilty now that I realise I was in the home of someone whose credentials I didn't check. Think of what might have happened! Her mother-in-law and father-in-law lived there too! Not a CRB check among the lot of 'em, I'll bet. How could I have been so careless with my son's security????

If dh ever finds out, he'll kill me.

mumbar · 12/09/2010 19:48

FFS, how to ruin a kids birthday party,

Hope you've checked whoevers doing the food has basic food hygeine certificate Wink

HotchpotchHoney · 12/09/2010 19:54

are you serious? facepainters who are paedophiles in disguise using rape paint!!!! think i've heard it all now. surely children of face painting age will be with a parent or guardian and taken home and not left alone so how on earth is this so called rape paint going to work?
i truly feel the whole world has gone bonkers, stark raving mad!!! Sad Angry

BeenBeta · 12/09/2010 20:01

I was at an party yesterday and there were DCs everywhere. The adults were drinking, no one really supervising. It was the same situation as the party the OP describes but it was the birthday party of one of the adults.

I bet no one would have asked about CRB if it was an adult party (with DCs) rather than a child's party (with adults). Its just the context. As soon as something is 'labelled' as being for DCs everyone starts rushing about looking for CRB checked supervisors.

Bonkers.

Snobear4000 · 12/09/2010 20:02

Did you hear of the bouncy castle man in the midlands who had random pop-up dildos springing up from the floor of the castles?

Awful.

MissM · 12/09/2010 20:05

Aaaaaghghg! When will people realise that having a CRB check doesn't stop someone committing a crime! (was going to write that in caps but feel like I've been yelling at the kids all day and it looked too shouty).

If your friends want your other friends to have CRB checks don't invite the first lot to your party.

Blu · 12/09/2010 20:17

Snobear, that's horrible.
And in the Midlands, too. Shock
I have sometimes wondered if people get a bit hysterical about these things, but that makes me realise you can't be too careful.
I'm going to get myself CRB checked to make sure DS is safe with me at home. All responsibel parents should.

MissM · 12/09/2010 20:19

Well it is the Midlands so are you surprised? I expect the man has another perverted bouncy castle in the north too.

Snobear4000 · 12/09/2010 20:22

Good idea, Blu. I think bouncy castles need to be CRB checked. As do nursery toilet seats. You never know.
