to allow my son to wear odd socks?

It started with two pairs of Ivor the Engine socks - one with Jones the Steam and one with Idris the Dragon and he always mixed them to wear one of each.

This has developed into a little idiosyncracy where he now mixes up his stripy socks - different coloured stripes, his animal socks - two different animals etc.

I am a little worried other mothers judge Shock me for letting him out with odd socks or other children will tease Sad him at school!

Ds (14) wears odd socks as he has lost the matching one in the black hole of his room, or the sock monster that lives in the dryer has eaten it; don't stress, just say you're getting in training for later.

sharbie · 09/09/2010 21:15

tis compulsory here

greenbananas · 09/09/2010 21:15

Nothing wrong with odd socks!

I doubt other mums will judge you - and if they do then they clearly do not have enough important stuff to think about!

Sugarkane · 09/09/2010 21:16

I wouldn't worry about it my DD won't leave the house without socks on her hands recently.

jasonthunderpants · 09/09/2010 21:16

I wear odd socks. Nothing wrong with that

feetheart · 09/09/2010 21:18

My DS (4.10) has taken to wearing odd shoes so I wouldn't worry about socks :)

MogTheForgetfulCat · 09/09/2010 21:20

DS2 went out in hideously mismatching clothes (his choice) and shoes with no socks today. Don't know if anyone judged, and don't care - it was the easiest way to avoid an unneccessary tantrum, and the easiest way to get him to get dressed himself (he is 2.6). I certainly wouldn't judge over mismatched socks Smile.

ChippyMinton · 09/09/2010 21:29

YANBU. I bought my DSs a job lot of identical grey socks for school, and another job lot of stripy socks in the same style but different colours, so they can mix and match. Mind you since I did this, the craze has died down.

Curlybrunette · 09/09/2010 21:35

I used to wonder if people would notice my ds's constant odd socks but then thought about it and couldn't recall seeing any other child's socks so figured no one would have spent the time looking at my son's.

Plus I decided I didn't care if they did notice!!!

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 09/09/2010 21:38

My son from age 12 always wore odd socks and still does aged 21 half the time. At his rowing club it was de rigeur to wear odd socks -sort of good luck thing!!

mummy2theboys · 09/09/2010 21:41

My DC rarely have matching socks, it drives my family crazy but I don't think it is important at all. I teach my DC to not worry about the small things like socks not matching. Tis a good life skill to be sure.

mumeeee · 09/09/2010 21:41

DD1 now 23 started wearing odd socks when she was in her teens. It soon became her thing she still wears odd soccks.

PutOnThePan · 09/09/2010 21:53

ahhhhh Smile It looks like odd socks are a good thing then and also the least of my worries wrt bizarre costumes Wink

DS is nearly 6 btw - should have said that, shouldn't I?

brassick · 09/09/2010 21:53

DD2 (11) never wears matching socks - makes my life easier as I don't have to bother spending time pairing them all up.

I see it as a fashion statement.

Ineed2 · 09/09/2010 22:35

My older Dd's 21 and 14 have been wearing odd sox since I gave up pairing them, with Dd1 I used to just throw all the undies in a draw in her room after washing them. Poor Dd2 has to wash her own [I got wise], so she never pairss them up. Funny though now Dd1 has a Dd of her own LO now wears odd sox too and probably always will.
Dd3 would not be seen alive or dead in odd sox, but does like to wear the same pair all week GrinGrin.

2shoes · 09/09/2010 22:38

go for it, ds is 18 and often chooses to wear odd socks, your ds is just advanced for his age

roomonthebroom · 09/09/2010 22:47

My DH swears by odd socks for luck. I thought this was a load of bollocks until the one and only time he wore matching socks-and someone drove into the side of his car on the motorway!

Now I INSIST on it, but I have persuaded him that they must be from the same pack eg one black with red stripes, one black with blue stripes rather than completely odd.

I do feel embarrassed though when he goes to the doctors and has to take his shoes off.

YANBU in the slightest.

elterwater · 09/09/2010 22:54

My dd deliberately wears odd socks. Wouldnt dream of wearing matching ones!

bellavita · 09/09/2010 22:58

DS2 10 wears odd socks - he pairs up the odd ones.

AnxiousLand · 09/09/2010 23:01

absolutely

reported to social services child protection team

YOU'LL BE SORRY LADY...HAHA

drfayray · 09/09/2010 23:02

Both DS and DC (15 and 12) always wear odd socks. And the other day, I saw a bloke in a coffee shop wearing one purple and one orange sock. Rest of outfit was typical business suit. I liked it!

OP, do not worry about it. As you can see, lots do it!

drfayray · 09/09/2010 23:03

I meant to say DD not DC.

Valpollicella · 09/09/2010 23:07

Out of necessity here sometimes Grin

Couldn't care less. Socks is socks is socks

zipzap · 09/09/2010 23:11

ds2 (2.5) has started doing this and I was thinking about starting the exact same thread as this Grin so you're definitely not alone with little ones doing it as well as older ones.

And like your ds, he loves to wear different but associated socks - so Noddy and Big Ears instead of 2x Noddy or 2x Big Ears, or Bob the builder and Scrambler etc. I just now pair them up that way - and work on the basis that I have two pairs of 'Noddy series' socks or two pairs of ITNG socks... Can kind of see the toddler logic though - there's only one Bob the builder in the series not 2 so why have 2 on you Grin

Things are progressing though - he adores having socks that have a character - or an animal or thing like train or bus on if character ones are all in the wash but gets really upset if he has to have plain or stripey socks on Hmm. I'm hoping it's just a phase!

As it is he gets so excited about putting his socks on each day and finding out who is going to be on them, not sure I can stand the trauma of the discovery it's plain socks day for long but there again not sure I like the rapid wash turnaround either...

thesunshinesbrightly · 09/09/2010 23:14

Does anyone even own a matching pair of socks?
