To be completely baffled as to why the tampon is more popular than the mooncup?

YunoYurbubson · 09/09/2010 16:24

It just doesn't make sense.

I am a very recent convert to the mooncup and all I can think is wtf was I doing with tampons all those years?

I feel almost... betrayed by the generations of women who have made the tampon the mainstream menstruation product of choice.

Ignore your prejudices because those would work either way. If you were used to using a mooncup and someone suggested carrying around a bloodsoaked wodge of cotton wool on a string in your vagina instead you would think that was gross. It's just what you're used to.

So, prejudices aside. Agreed?

Lets just look at this logically.

The mooncup produces no waste, so no flushing things you shouldn't, no filling a bin with smelly waste, no furtive smuggling of used tampons wrapped in loo roll up your sleeve when there is no bin and you don't have pockets.

It's every bit as comfy and convenient.

It's cheaper.

And it is SO COOL seeing how much blood you have lost. I'm sorry, but it is. It's much less yucky because it's not old, brown drying smelly blood. It's a fresh little pot of new, clean blood. It's just not yucky.

And this isn't a thread to critisise or judge or feel superior. I just REALLY want someone else to be converted and feel the joy too Grin. I want someone else to have the scales fall from their eyes and feel as delighted as I do right now.

I own a Mooncup. But I can't use it, as I have a prolapse and it keeps falling out, as my fanjo isn't long enough for it. I can just about keep a tampon in. Would like to use it, but just have a bit of compassion for those of us whose bits have been rather battered about by childbirth and who aren't quite the same shape that we used to be. Sad

I had an allergic reaction to the mooncup. It contains no information about a possible allergic reaction in the info. Was very scary and uncomfortable as well as humiliating.
So definitely not the perfect solution for everyone.

JustKeepSparkling · 02/12/2010 20:41

I converted to a Mooncup on MN advice/info and I love it, would definitely be telling any DDs i have about it.

Have spoken to RL mums but they give me the Hmm face.

Think it takes a leap of faith to try it then that's it you wonder why you never used it before.

The first time you try to get it out though, relaaaxx! it will come out, you will not be stuck with it there forever or need to go to A&E to get it removed

Month 3 of my mooncup.

Month 1 : Nearly binned it

Month 2 : Trimmed it and liked it better

Month 3 : Still not cut stalk completely off (tells me which way up it is), but definitely not going back to tampons.

Showed it to my 11 yr old, who gave me a withering look and told me she is going to use towels when she starts Grin

A1980 · 23/01/2011 20:29

YABVVU not everyone can use them. I am one of them.

I have problems with a mooncup. I've tried for ages to make it work. I don't have any problems with tampons, so I will be sticking with them.

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 23/01/2011 20:38

Is it like a cap? Has a cap years ago - would have one now but the doc said no, not reliable as contraception, unless you want to get pregnant Hmm, stay with the pill Sad The side benefit of the cap was that the blood was contained, and could be disposed of, the cap washed etc, sounds just like the mmoncup - obvious disavantage if you are work, out etc re the cubicles not having washbasins, but generally manageable. Where do you buy them? Are they size specific?

puglet123 · 23/01/2011 20:41

I bought a mooncup because of a MN thread and am thrilled with it! Took me a few days to get used to it but now - fab - no cramps!! Haven't braved a public loo with it yet though but you can keep it in for longer than you can a tampon. I can see why some people don't find it so easy to use.

HSMM · 23/01/2011 20:49

You can get them at Boots

musicmadness · 23/01/2011 20:56

I can't use the bloody things - and I tried for a lot longer than people say is required to get used to it! I just can't get it in right. Then again I can't use tampons unless they come with an applicator either. If someone invents an easy way of getting it in (again baring in mind that I need an applicator to use tampons at all) then I will give it another try.

dickiedavisthunderthighs · 23/01/2011 20:57

Boak.
I am one of the women 'betraying' you then and quite frankly it's personal choice.
You don't want a wodge of cotton wool up there, I don't want to be emptying a plastic cup full of blood onto my hands every 2 hours.

igetmorelovefromthecat · 23/01/2011 21:05

I have a horrific tale to tell about my Mooncup nightmare a few years ago. I was blind drunk in the pub and despite it being my 'special' time of the month I had convinced my ex-DP that a shag would be a good idea once we got back to his camper van.

So went to the toilet just before we left to remove the Mooncup. My manual dexterity was not quite as good as it should have been and my hand kind of slipped as I pulled it out. Next thing, there is blood EVERYWHERE in the cubicle. And I mean everywhere. It looked like there had been a massacre going on in there. Seem to remember having a half-arsed attempt at cleaning it up with some bog roll but it was a lost cause.

Also, I used to get a sore fanjo after a couple of days of using it.

It's tampons all the way for me now.

sayithowitis · 23/01/2011 21:24

Mrs GuyofGisborne, I am amazed that your GP won't give you the Cap. I have been using it for nearly 30 years now and have always found it a perfectly reliable form of contraception when used properly. All my pregnancies were planned and we have never had an 'accident'. When I got my last one, the GP told me that fewer GPs can prescribe them these days as many younger GPs have not had the relevant training to be able to fit them. Maybe that is the real reason your GP won't prescribe? I can't believe any responsible doctor would rather see you shove bucketloads of hormones down your throat every month! I am getting to the stage when I won't be needing mine too much longer ( no periods now for almost a year) and will be kind of sad to see my cap go!

StealthPolarStuckSpaceBar · 23/01/2011 21:35

Can't tell from my posts further down this thread whether I'd used it by then or not but I have used it a few times now and I love it. Only problem is I have a box of tampons to use up /. gte rid of - each month I promise I'll use them up the next month, and I never can bear the thought when the time comes.

music - are you trying to put it too high up? I was amazed at how low it had to be. In fact I put mine in really low and it sort of shuffles its way up into the right position within a few mins Blush

StealthPolarStuckSpaceBar · 23/01/2011 21:36

And I always had to use applicator tampons too - bet you are trying to put it too far up

littleomar · 23/01/2011 21:39

so (lurking) mine leaks, but that could be because it's too high, rather than too low as I had assume. is that right? maybe i will dust it off and give it another go.

StealthPolarStuckSpaceBar · 23/01/2011 21:41

possibly, I am no expert, just know that the higher I try to put it the less comfortable / right it seems. But when I put it low it feels a bit uncomfortable for about 10 mins, and then it vanishes and it much higher up when I come to get it out :o

I also love the shower thing - really clean!

geordieminx · 23/01/2011 21:41

I trimmed the stalk because it was sore, but then found I couldn't get it out Blush

Of course the more I tried the more stressed out I got and the worse it hot. Happened 4 or 5 times so I gave up. I use tampons now, hate them as they tend to caus thrush but no real choice.

Does anyone over 15 actually use towels? disposable ones that is?Shock

humanheart · 23/01/2011 22:00

17 pages and i've well missed the boat here. but i LOVE the mooncup, absolutely love it. changed my life. menopause is the best time to use it bcs that's when you flood a lot, and a mooncup sorts that out.

never got on with tampons, preferred towels. took me a while to sort out how to use the mooncup but once I did - joy! don't put it in too high - just inside moreorless (if you can feel it it needs to go in a bit higher). cut off the stalk, bear down when you want to get it out. I whip it in and out in a nanosecond now, don't even think about it. I don't feel it and it does a stunning job. used to have a STACK of sanitary products in the loo/bathroom, now nothing at all.

i'm with op - i love to see how much fresh blood there is in it, like a little trophy. sorry Grin

LOL at the campsite massacre

amberleaf · 23/01/2011 22:08

What are they made of? Latex or Silicone?

StealthPolarStuckSpaceBar · 23/01/2011 22:13

Oh yes I need my stalk - thats why I found the "moving of its own accord" thing so good
And yes, I used to use towels, apart from on the heaviest days (when most of the time I used both) as I found tampons so uncomfortable.
