To be completely baffled as to why the tampon is more popular than the mooncup?

YunoYurbubson · 09/09/2010 16:24

It just doesn't make sense.

I am a very recent convert to the mooncup and all I can think is wtf was I doing with tampons all those years?

I feel almost... betrayed by the generations of women who have made the tampon the mainstream menstruation product of choice.

Ignore your prejudices because those would work either way. If you were used to using a mooncup and someone suggested carrying around a bloodsoaked wodge of cotton wool on a string in your vagina instead you would think that was gross. It's just what you're used to.

So, prejudices aside. Agreed?

Lets just look at this logically.

The mooncup produces no waste, so no flushing things you shouldn't, no filling a bin with smelly waste, no furtive smuggling of used tampons wrapped in loo roll up your sleeve when there is no bin and you don't have pockets.

It's every bit as comfy and convenient.

It's cheaper.

And it is SO COOL seeing how much blood you have lost. I'm sorry, but it is. It's much less yucky because it's not old, brown drying smelly blood. It's a fresh little pot of new, clean blood. It's just not yucky.

And this isn't a thread to critisise or judge or feel superior. I just REALLY want someone else to be converted and feel the joy too Grin. I want someone else to have the scales fall from their eyes and feel as delighted as I do right now.

Well the reason that I´m interested in it for her is that she´s had cramps so bad she´s been in tears.

She is only 12 though so I don´t want to put her off completely!

BertieBotts · 13/09/2010 13:20

I don't think it would put her off if you explained that it could help with her cramps, but it might be difficult to get the hang of. She might be determined and try it and get it right after a few goes, or she might be completely put off and put it away again but she might then have a go a few years later when she is more confident with her body. I guess it's expensive to take the gamble though.

If you've got a shower perhaps she could try it out in there, then if she gets any blood on her fingers or elsewhere it will be washed off straight away and won't be so off-putting?

I couldn't even use a tampon until I was about 19 so she's some of the way there already!

diddl · 13/09/2010 13:25

Oh yes, she´s been using tampons for a year-she was determined to be able to swim, so certainly when the incentive is there for her she´ll do it.

Funnily enough her last 2 periods have been OK re cramping.

Perhaps she used tampons when she didn´t really need to.

Agree OP am total convert after hearing about it on here and also felt cross that I hadnt discovered the mooncup before. The days of disgusting oozing tampons in the loo bin are gone hooray. Even on my heaviest day only have to change the mooncup twice. On the issue of changing when you are at work/in public loo I take a bottle of tap water in a water bottle in with me and swill using that then wash my hands thoroughly as normal so nobody knows (except when I am with my 3 year old who offers a running commentary on what I am doing to anyone who cares to listen).

Have also converted 2 friends Grin - I told the 2 mums in our group who also use real nappies who are both now users. Tried with my sister and she thought I was a weirdo. Convinced mooncups havent caught because towels and tampons are money spinners as women have to buy more and more of their products whilst with mooncups you buy one and it lasts for years.

BonzoDooDah · 14/09/2010 21:32

and you converted me .... bought one today ...

I spent about half an hour in various poses getting it in and trying not to ping it back out again Blush ... but I think it's in. Let's see how it goes.

Q: Is it supposed to be really, really low? Like only just in low? Or an inch higher? There doesn't seem to be an inbetween Blush

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 14/09/2010 21:38

I got mine today too!

I've snipped off the stem and all seems to be going well so far - I've learnt already to get a good supply of loo roll ripped off and witin easy reach before starting any attempt at emptying!

Tomorrow should be more of a challenge though - at work, and my period wil be much much heavier (usually get through a super plus tampon in 2 hours) - wish me luck!

btw bonzo mine is really, really low. The stalk was poking out of me before I chopped it off Shock

solo · 14/09/2010 23:17

Yes Bonzo, that sounds about right.

Welcome to the Mooncup club both of you! Grin

sixpercenttruejedi · 14/09/2010 23:33

Just read the thread and was considering converting. Looked it up on the web and was showing DP. When I explained that you just tip the blood away, his first response?
'oh, you could feed the roses with it.'
Hmm

solo · 14/09/2010 23:58

LOL!

BertieBotts · 15/09/2010 00:36

Actually he's not wrong - apparently it makes good plant food! Grin

sixpercenttruejedi · 15/09/2010 00:43

That may be true, but just like other posters who are reluctant to waddle to the sink, I'm equally reluctant to waddle round the garden.
Stuff the roses. Grin

openerofjars · 15/09/2010 20:39

Okay, got mine today, along with 2 pg tests (covering all possibilities as I had my coil out at the end if my last period), so either way I have something to look forward to at the end of the month.Grin

I think because I'd got used to using tampons I was picturing something, well, smaller. Meh. I have sex, I've had a baby, I've had smear tests: it can't be more intrusive than any of those events. Onwards and upwards, figuratively speaking...

schroeder · 15/09/2010 21:00

What about reusable towels? So much more comfy, and I made mine myself for next to nothing.

I have never used a tampon properly, I give up after about 30 mins it's just so uncomfortable.

I had both my dcs by emcs too; I just don't think I'm big enough in that department.Blush

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 15/09/2010 22:08

Well I always fell dirty using towels.

I put a thin pad in today as this mooncup malarky is so new to me (on day 2 so far!). My period was hideously heavy (as predicted) and I have only had one leak after being stuck in a meeting for 4 hours. I have felt clean and fresh too.

I emptied it 3 times in total at work, all pretty uneventful but the blood pooling and not flushing first time is a pain (I tried to line the pan with loo roll, but the work stuff isn't very thick!)

No cramps today either - all in all I'm chuffed to bits so far!!

solo · 16/09/2010 00:28

Schroeder, of course you are big enough to use a Mooncup. Presumably you had sex with a penis involved so you can get a Mooncup up there :) give it a go, it's fab! honesly!

TheLadyEvenstar · 16/09/2010 00:45

Ok now I know I will sound blonde but I can be forgiven seeing as I am!!

can you sleep with a mooncup in?

my periods are very heavy for a few days...would a MC work for me?

and where can I buy one?

madhattershouse · 16/09/2010 00:50

You can sleep with one. Amazon has them at around £17, cheaper than Boots! I am ordering one now!!

solo · 16/09/2010 14:13

TLE, I sometimes put a waterproof pad under my sheet if I'm having a really heavy one as a precaution. If you want reassurance, just use a panty liner or towel. :)

sethstarkaddersmum · 16/09/2010 14:15

I've just made myself a Mooncup bag from Liberty lawn. Smile

It only took about 10 mins - maybe I should start making them for Mooncup-using friends (if I have any).

solo · 16/09/2010 14:31

Great idea! I might just do the same if I may?

sethstarkaddersmum · 16/09/2010 14:41

of course; it's easy peasy; I just copied the bag it came in and reused the ribbons.

TheLadyEvenstar · 16/09/2010 15:20

i just looked on ebay and they come in 2 sizes????????

schroeder · 16/09/2010 16:04

Well I'm sure it's possible, but it's all academic anyway I haven't had a period for a year due to mirena.

I just wanted to mention that there are other alternatives to buying tampons or towels every month and having them end up in landfill/on beaches.

I'm sure moon/diva cups are great for those that get along with them.Grin

solo · 16/09/2010 16:05

Yes, I believe it's size A for over 30's or had vaginal delivery...

Thanks Seth.

solo · 16/09/2010 16:07
