To expect good grammar from a year three teacher?

I live in zone four of East London, and while I am originally not from that area and have a different accent, DC, DP, CM, exDH and all DC's friends do, and have a fairly pronounced East London accent.

Now: I have NOTHING against an accent from anywhere in the country, I really don't. But I DO have issues with the bad grammar that can sometimes come with it, for example:

'we done this at school today Mummy'
'Where is the book we was reading Mummy'
'I didn't eat nuffink for lunch today'

I have spent the past five years patiently correcting DC and explaining basic correct grammar to him. I also explain that while lots of the grown ups he knows speak incorrectly, he must not correct them, but must listen to how his teacher and I speak. I am lucky in that he is a competent and avid reader and so I have been encouraging him to read Harry Potter books to try and instill it in him further (top tip - if you want your son to read Harry Potter, buy the Lego DS Game - it worked for me!)

Anyway - I digress. I went to pick up DS from school yesterday and they came out of a different gate. When we found them his new teacher said to me:

'I'm sorry you wasn't told'

I was taken aback and mentioned it to another Mum friend of mine with a child in the same year(I could only mention it to this one friend as the other Mums probably wouldn't have noticed TBH). She smiled and said I was being a bit snobby.

What do you think? And what would you do, if anything?

Hey, albertcamus, not all teachers who trained via the GTP are failed industry career-changers! I worked in academic research as a psychologist before training as a teacher because I knew that once I started teaching I was unlikely to give it up. I chose the GTP over the PGCE because I had had enough of academia and I needed to pay the mortgage.

Thanks nickelbabe and LeQueen.Smile

Dh and I have been discussing grammar/accents tonight and he reminded me of an occasion in my last job, where a lady asked me if I was from Bolton.I am not,but DH is from nearby.Years of living with him have made me pick up his accent slightly, but only when I'm speaking to someone else Northern.

Last week,I stopped to chat to two groups mutual friends outside the pub.One set speak with very strong Leicester accents, the others cut glass RP.Unconciously I was seesawing between one accent and the other, and only realised later. It must have been bloody hilarious listening to me.Grin

SE13Mummy sincere apologies - I really should not have generalised there, sorry for that comment. There are many excellent GTP teachers in my school.

TheFallenMadonna - unqualified people should not be '''teaching''' our children, whether they call themselves Cover Supervisors, Learning Directors or anything else. That has always been the NUT's position and is an opinion now gaining weight among parents who realise how their children are being short-changed.

Isn´t it lack of clarity of speech that has led to "could of" instead of "could have"?

And also no understanding that it is "could´ve" that they are hearing?

Loriycs · 12/09/2010 02:08

i would suggest moving your children to a different school if you feel unhappy about their speech, and feel it is the fault of the school!
