Yes, it's lovely, much of it was filmed in South Devon around the coastal path which is a gorgeous part of the world. I always feel like slapping Mariane when I watch it, and saying to her "For heaven's sake, leave the young whippersnapper alone, and get yourself a real man. Go and jump on the Colonel immediately." Realise this is not very ladylike.

My own favourite is Persuasion with Cieran Hinds and Amanda Root - I am invariably in tears at the end, and the whole thing is so beautifully done and sympathetic to the book, which is my favourite Austen. If I'm feeling particularly indulgent, I'll top it off with Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, also with Cieran Hinds, also from a wonderful book and also leaving me sniffling happily/pathetically at the end... Sigh.

I am not at all fond of KK but I don't think she is wooden - I think she's quite good. I want to think she's wooden, believe me, she annoys me intensely, but I grudgingly admit that she's not a bad actress.
Jennifer Ehle is on Twitter, she's lovely.

scottishmummy · 04/09/2010 23:32

kiera knightley is once a tree school of acting.rank rotten

UnePrune · 04/09/2010 23:33

BootyMum · 04/09/2010 23:36

I have just never seen KK in anything where I've thought wow that was great acting or where I felt in any way moved by her performance. I agree she can learn her lines but for me there is no emotional depth there... Find her quite irritating TBH.

Kate Winslet however I think is fabulous. Love her in S & S, the scene she does with ET where she is confronted by Elinor's pain at having to keep her feelings hidden... Now that sort of acting feels believable and moved me almost to tears. Fan bloody tastic!

Armi · 04/09/2010 23:37

KK is like a gurning monkey in P&P. When attempting to appear 'vivacious' she sticks her chin out, bares her teeth and giggles like a frightened chimpanzee. It's a terrifying performace. Ehle managed to be all twinkly in her performance which, imho, beats 'screeching primate' hands down.

emkana · 04/09/2010 23:39

yy hate KK in P & P

The only film in which I found her remotely bearable was Atonement. Even though she certainly didn't deserve to be lucky enough to kiss James McAvoy [sigh]

spot on!kk does the jaw protrusion to=gravitas.she is speak yer weight actress lacking range and depth.

UnePrune · 04/09/2010 23:41

Now hang on, I never said 'great acting'! I just think she's nowhere near as bad as I expect her to be. The chin-jutting is annoying but I think I prefer it to the knowing winsomeness of Ehle (though I'd be knowingly winsome if I had to act in front of Colin Firth tbh).

expatinscotland · 04/09/2010 23:41

I like that one, but I hate all other Jane Austen shite.

BootyMum · 04/09/2010 23:41

Yes, quite horrifying Arni Grin

fuschiagroan · 04/09/2010 23:43

ANYWAY enough of Keira Knightley and back to Alan Rickman - much more interesting

expatinscotland · 04/09/2010 23:44

Oh, yes, the Alan Rickman one.

UnePrune · 04/09/2010 23:45

You can't beat Alan Rickman with a tache in Truly Madly Deeply [sigh]

fuschiagroan · 04/09/2010 23:47

ew no I hate facial hair. Sense and Sensibility is him at his hottest - he is so nice in it as well.

tinky19 · 04/09/2010 23:47

Alan Rickman - OMG I think he is gorgeous! Has anyone seen Truly Madly Deeply, if you haven't, book out a whole day!

BootyMum · 04/09/2010 23:47

Alan Rickman = gorgeous! He makes me go all gooey when he hangs around Marianne's bedroom looking moody and concerned [in the most manly way] when she is at death's door... And definitely not wooden acting Wink

DinahRod · 04/09/2010 23:49

Totally agree Scuttlebutter, Persuasion is a gorgeous and much under-rated book and film, Ciaron Hinds & Amanda Root as Cpt Wentworth and Anne Elliot are superb. Mary Musgrove is a fabulously comic creation too, on par with Mr Collins imo.

tinky19 · 04/09/2010 23:49

Sorry UnePrune have just seen your thread! It's the chello don't ya think!

UnePrune · 04/09/2010 23:51

Oh yes the cello! I took up cello probably because of that film!
I was a student at the time and I remember being desperate for a flat like hers. I did end up with a job a bit like hers but that was bad planning, probably...

UnePrune · 04/09/2010 23:57

I watched 'Bright Star' the other night hoping to get a fix of lovely story/foppery/costumes. Yes to costumes, yes to moments of totally pure foppery and lovely acting, but a huge failure overall. (Not least the American trying to be Scottish, that was just painful.)

BootyMum · 05/09/2010 00:00

I know what you mean UnePrune. Didn't really warm to main female character in Bright Star , found her a bit snippy and arch. Big disappointment as I so wanted to love it...

JimJammum · 05/09/2010 08:42

I think you're all missing the point about the KK S&S film, which was not her being wooden or not, but Matthew MacFadyen. In the scene where he proposes, in the rain, when he almost kisses her ......swoon emoticon.
And, quite liked RPJ in the ITV Persuasion that was on a few years back.

BelligerentGhoul · 05/09/2010 12:05

Yy to Miss Pettigrew - lovely book and v sweet film apart from Moaning Myrtle woman who is a pain with her stupid voice.

Since one of dd1's friends says I look like a cross between Audrey Hepburn and Moaning Myrtle woman, this bothers me a bit!

Matthew M is pure smouldering loveliness in the KK P&P - you can keep Colin F and his wet shirt.

BelligerentGhoul · 05/09/2010 12:06

Those ITV ones were hideous - Billy P in Mansfield Park was a travesty. Persuasion street snogging scene - grrrrrrrrr. But the worst was S&S with all those ugly people who looked like small dogs.
