to want fireworks banned unless you attend a public show

We live on a smallish estate, from 8 pm tonight a house 2 doors across has been letting these fuckers off,it sounds like a shotgun each time!(yes,it's that close). My dog hates it so barks constantly,so I've had over a hour of noise from them and from my dog scared.

At 8pm it wasn't even dark,so what the hell is the point of fireworks, apart from pissing off the neighbourhood who are settling young children or comforting frightened animals.

Ban the fuckers I say, unless you are miles from anywhere or attending a public do on 5 th nov.

YANBU. One for a Mumsnet campaign?

iamaLeafontheWind · 05/09/2010 18:54

I have to have a license and insurance to drive my car, but I can buy a great load of explosives (£350 barrage box, it was great!) with no check at all.

yadnbu. i had a phobia of fireworks for years after a bit of one fell on my foot when i was small.

personal use fw are just completely ridiculous and so dangerous. public displays are brilliant, safe and usually free!!! i live inp lymouth where the firework champs are held in front of my house every august - its flipping brilliant! why do i need to feck around with one i bought from the corner shop???

Saggyoldclothcatpuss · 05/09/2010 19:32

They are a bloody nuisance! Bloody dangerous, antisocial and should not be sold to the public! Last year I had a paddock with 30 sets of neighbours. I had to print out and hand deliver 30 requests asking I be contacted if fireworks were being let off! I had several rude calls from horrid people who didn't care that my animals were terrified, and spent 3 nights standing in the field in the dark trying to calm 3 half crazed ponies! They busted through the electric fence in fright and I spent weeks clearing up spent fireworks from the field! My partner wasn't there to help, he was at home trying to comfort my frightened dogs! I've nothing much against organised displays, you know when they are and they are safe, but it goes on for weeks and weeks!

YABU

it wasn't late, and not all dogs are bothered by them (in fact this is a training issue)

and yet again banning things cos one person annoys with them is not justified.

BellaBearisWideAwake · 05/09/2010 19:38

someone was letting them off in our campsite last night. Apart from annoying us and waking up the kids, they couldn't set them off properly. One went off almost horizontally and could have hit any of the cars in the field.

I told on them to the campsite security people Grin. They were really concerned and came right away and stopped it.

Bloody dangerous.

YABU - I'd personally be very sad if fireworks were banned. Fireworks are special to me and represent a very special man, my Grandad, who's birthday was Bonfire Night. We grew up always having a family party in his big garden. He died, on his birthday 3 years ago this year. I continue to mark his birthday with a fountain and sparklers next to his grave and I would be devasted if I could no longer do this... We even had a small fireworks (professional) display at our wedding, because I wanted to feel my Grandad had been there some how.

If the only place I could have fireworks was a massive organised display I definately wouldn't feel the connection to my Grandad through them as I do now.

I understand some people find them a nusiance. Are fireworks on sale all year around now? I could understand them being limited to only be allowed to be set off on Bonfire Night and New Years.

QueeferSutherland · 05/09/2010 19:58

YANBU!

I'd definately be behind a MN campain.

They are anti-social and dangerous.

cate16 · 05/09/2010 20:20

We have a wedding venue near us and get at least one free firework display every weekend......... I up for banning them!

poshwellies · 05/09/2010 22:06

I'm up for mumsnet campaign.

Not sure how I can train my dog to stop being scared witless,I've spoken to my vets about this and it's not down to my training(I've tried the cd noise therapy and DAP),it's common for dogs (unless trained for guns) to be startled by loud bangs.

My dog has to be sedated and this is hit and miss as valium can make dogs more hyper and cause liver damage.

I can sedate my dog on nov the 5th but I can't bloody sedate him on a whim every weekend just in case.
