to want fireworks banned unless you attend a public show

We live on a smallish estate, from 8 pm tonight a house 2 doors across has been letting these fuckers off,it sounds like a shotgun each time!(yes,it's that close). My dog hates it so barks constantly,so I've had over a hour of noise from them and from my dog scared.

At 8pm it wasn't even dark,so what the hell is the point of fireworks, apart from pissing off the neighbourhood who are settling young children or comforting frightened animals.

Ban the fuckers I say, unless you are miles from anywhere or attending a public do on 5 th nov.

YABU

The sort of people who missuse them would only do some other stupid thing if they couldn't get fireworks.

With any luck, they'll blow themselves up and remove themselves from the genepool.

PavlovtheCat · 05/09/2010 09:36

YABU, banning anything and everything is so typical of the nanny state we find ourselves in. If you don't like it ban it, that seems to be the answer to everything.

spiritmum · 05/09/2010 09:42

YANBU.

When I was at school a girl got scarred for life by a firework thrown by some other girls. They'd been aiming at a 4 yr old and the girl who got burned pushed her out of the way.

I also know someone whose dog was killed by fireworks that were tied to it stail and set alight.

It's clear that the laws aren't working and that kids can get hold of fireworks easily. Most will just mess about with them and will get hurt or hurt others accidentally, but some will deliberately use them to maim other people and animals.

Time to ban them.

PavlovtheCat · 05/09/2010 09:52

cars are dangerous. Lets ban them.

JuneBugJr · 05/09/2010 09:55

YANBU

Ban the fucking things. If only for the reason that only antisocial turds seem to get something out of them.
It baffles me that something so dangerous is so readily available to stupid people, who are like a dog with 2 dicks with them during the season of Nov - Jan.

Lougle · 05/09/2010 09:56

Fireworks are dangerous, and use gunpowder. Tell me any other explosive that are available to joe public without any proof of responsibility and ability to use them?

spiritmum · 05/09/2010 09:57

We need cars and other means of transport because that is how our society works, rightly or wrongly. I can't get to the doctors, the hospital or the shops without it - or they'd have to use a mode of transport to come to us. I can get to the dc's school but without cars there'd be no teachers there.

Remind me why fireworks are essential...

PavlovtheCat · 05/09/2010 10:02

lol! essential, well then ban everything fun eh? why should the whole country have to stop doing something because of a couple of idiots? There are so many things that are not essential, that are dangerous and should not be banned, because otherwise we will live in a world dictated by mob rule and nothing would be fun as no-one would be allowed to do anything.

spiritmum · 05/09/2010 10:27

But the problem is that for many people the danger and misery caused by fireworks more than outweighs the 'fun'. If it were just a couple of idiots then I'd agree with you, but sadly it isn't.

The laws have been tightened again and again and are proving to be ineffective.

Fireworks should be at licensed displays only - and the ones at displays are soooo much better anyway.

Mishy1234 · 05/09/2010 10:27

YANBU. Fireworks are fatal in the wrong hands and they should only be handled by people who are licensed to do so.

Every year there are stories of animals who are mutilated/killed by some idiot who thinks it's a laugh to tie fireworks to them. Every year people are hurt by them, intentionally or accidentally.

There is no reason why people can't attend organised displays.

grumpypants · 05/09/2010 10:30

rubberduck was that in Kent?

RubberDuck · 05/09/2010 10:33

No, London. Quite a while ago now too.

SassySusan · 05/09/2010 10:43

The story about the 3 year old is awful. They are dangerous and need to used carefully. Like lots of stuff they can also create a nuisance.

We had fireworks (a professional display) at our wedding - it was a lovely way to mark the event.

We also had a £5 box from Lidl in the garden last Nov 5. It was more putt putt than bang bang... but it was a lovely evening... We invited all the neighbours round, barbecued burgers and saussages in the garden - and all the kids had a ball dancing to Hannah Montana in the living room afterwards. No one got hurt and everyone had fun.

People will always find ways to be anti-scial, but it doesn't need to be like that.

TheProvincialLady · 05/09/2010 10:47

YANBU. The government wants to ban vitamins and supplements because they are unsafe and people can't be trusted to makes decisions about their own health, but apparently explosives aren'tHmm

TitsalinaBumSquash · 05/09/2010 10:50

As with everything in this world, it is a case of some inconsiderate people ruining it for everyone else.

Some people buy a small box of Fireworks, they set them up at the end of their garden, everyone stands at the other end, they have a little gathering and some food, everyone has fun and no one gets hurt and if these people are me i will pop a note through all neighbours doors inviting them over and letting them know of the plans and i will only do it on Nov 5th and it will only be to 10pm maximum.

Some people however have Fireworks every weekend and have rollicking great noisy parties and get drunk and shouty and start pissing about with said fireworks, they let nobody near by know and they go on long into the night.

Everything in the world is the same, some people ruin it for others.

CrystalQueen · 05/09/2010 10:51

YANBU. When we lived in Edinburgh the bloody things were set off every night in our street from October to February. Once some idiot let one off in our stairwell - luckily no-one was on the stairs at the time.

BigBadMummy · 05/09/2010 16:43

I can understand why you feel that way but then can we ban motorbikes because there is one around here that loves doing do-nuts in teh church car park opposite at 2am every weekend.

Personally, I would hate to see fireworks banned.

We often buy one of the large single ignition ones for family get togethers and we mark the anniversary of the death of loved ones with them.

throckenholt · 05/09/2010 16:50

I agree they should be banned for public sale.
My delightful neighbours always get unused display ones (which are not supposed to be sold to the public) a few days after Bonfire Night - they are unbelievably loud and scare the dog witless.

I like fireworks - but I think they should be kept for very special public occasions (not private weddings for example) and organised Bonfire Night displays only.

To Lougle's list I would add - organisers ought to also provide free calming medication for all animals owners within a 2 mile radius.

YANBU - hate them!

ccpccp · 05/09/2010 17:16

Ban dogs!

They sh1t everywhere, and are completely non-essential.

Hundreds of kids are mauled by them every year. Far more than are hurt in firework accidents.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/09/2010 17:46

YANBU.
One thoughtless idiot in a night affects a whole neighbourhood, never mind the fact that they are used in gardens round here that arent even big enough for people to retreat to a safe distance.

Ipom · 05/09/2010 18:52

I thought I was the only being subjected to those horrid things.

For the past two nights we've had them and will continue to have them until next Febuary.

Oh joy.
