I'll send my two DSs round to anyone who has a spider problem. THEY actually scare spiders. My DSs love prodding them, cooing over them, giggling at them and even try to stroke them. I've trained them to pick spiders up and put them outside. They have competitions to see who can get the largest spider in their hands.

I've seen spiders run away in blind panic... I kid you not.

Last year I was in the living room with ds who'd pointed at the ceiling saying 'what's that thing' - biggest spider I'd ever seen in the middle of the ceiling.

To my shame I screamed, ran off, leaving ds in there and my dh also had trouble dealing with it.

Gross - I've never really recovered and ds keeps reminding me of it.

Thing is they always come when dh not around and I'm left to deal.

this is the only house ive ever lived in that just doesnt get them.

on holiday recently we had 5 in one night in the bedroom. one was on the floor and was running toward me, DD saw it and pointed it out, and im ashamed to say i did the spider dance. (you know where you run up and down on the spot screaming)

i have no idea what happened to me - i used to be able to pick them up - i wasnt afraid of anything crawly, and then one day i just realised i was scared of them. i cant even pin point what made me scared of them. stupid! i used to love them.

we get huge ones where we live because we are near water. DH works away from home alot so I became aquainted with all our neighbours pretty quickly after moving inGrin

I can put a glass or bowl over them, just can't get past that bit!

I am also scared of large spiders but this morning had to remove one from the bath. Single parent and my dcs away.

I got a feather duster it climbed in then shook it out the bathroom window. Then close examination of the duster. Smile

Glass and piece of stiff paper. Works for BEES as well!

Was trying to be braver about them now that DS1 is big enough to pick up on my mood. Managed to catch a big one in the spider catcher last week, and threw it outside. I swear it was the same one which came back later in the day- dropped on to my head whilst I was cooking, then crawled down my T shirt. I stripped off, flung it on the floor and beat it to death with DH's slipper. War has been declared.

I am terrified of the bloody things! I think I'm getting better now as I don't want DD to be scared so I try to be brave but a few years ago I found one in my bed Shock

It was the biggest one Ive ever seen. No exaggeration but its body must have been about 3cm accross and it was a thick hairy one!! I screamed so my mum decided to spray it with insecr killer. Afer a whole can and a soaking bed sheet it was still alive so we got a massive encyclopeadia (sp?) put it on top if the spider and sat on it... lifted the book and it was still running. It was immortal!!

I couldn't sleep in my bed that night I was terrified!

Someone suggested hoovering them but I can't because the pop noise it makes when it enters the tube make me boak!!

I can't do the glass and card thing. I tried it once and could hear it crawling round on the card inside and it freaked me out and I dropped the lot!

The hairspray works for wasps too... thats my usual trick!

I love BeenBeta's story of spiders from ye olde times of yore.

I still wish they were dead though. They run fast, and run atcha

I have not kissed my cat since I saw him pounce on a spider, then come towards me with teh spidery legs sticking out of his mouth like macabre whiskers and then try and give me the spider.

I've got one living in the bathroom. I'm scared of them but trying to get better about it so as not to pass it on to dd.So I'm letting this one live beside the window. Reading your post I thought,ah, poor spider, but then I remembered I killed one last night! Again, in the bathroom, a big one with long legs, the cat tipped me off about it and I stood on the poor thing. I seem to be able to put up with them ... until they move.

Can't believe people use sprays, luckily I don't have any furniture/hair spray knocking around so you all can't be a bad influence Grin

When the autumn comes, just place a conker in the corner of every room you want clear of the little blighters.

The conkers give off a scent that is imperceptible to us, but spiders hate it. It won't kill them, but they will NOT come into your house while they are there.

I was sceptical about this, but it does work! It will stop working some time next spring when the conkers are really old.

sunnydelight - what spray do you use though?

I'm close to phobic, I need a spray I can use at a distance. What's the best thing (have noted the Elnett tip but wonder if there's something more custom made).

tiredoldtrout, that's the all time best piece of advice I've ever come across on MN!! I can't wait for Autumn, only thing is cause of ds and dd I can't leave conkers lying about, but I could put one in the corner behind my bed where when I hoover I sometimes find a pesky spider. That's the place I most loath a spider being. Thanks Smile

I use Mortein Patsy, but I'm on Oz where the supermarket shelves are filled with a wide variety of chemicals that promise death to spiders/cockroaches/mozzies etc.

I know it's horribly ecologically unsound, but I really only can live here if I know I can get the bastards before they get me!
