"We have Troops fighting a war without proper equipment..... Yet we donate millions to other countries before helping our own first. 99% of people on facebook won't have the guts to copy and repost this. WILL YOU, I thought charity began at home!!!"

It just offends me.

I've just c&p'ed the punch in the face one, got into a huge argument a few days ago about this status. Made me so Angry How can anyone compare our standing of living with those affected by this?

scaryteacher · 27/08/2010 16:17

I agree that how Pakistan is helped needs to be carefully looked at. The Taliban have already urged people not to accept Western aid and have said they will give the requisite money. Where are they getting it from?

Yes, there is a need for emergency aid now, but hard questions must be asked about later funding. Pakistan is a failed state; the Army were trying to clear the Taliban from the Swat Valley, whilst the Security services were arming and funding the Taliban in Afghanistan.

I do not want to give money which will be diverted to make IEDs to blow up my serving friends/family. The practical option for me is to donate to Shelterbox which sends out things like tents/water purification tablets/cooking utensils etc, so aid is getting there, but in things rather than money.

The UK Government has in effect donated twice - through it's own contribution and via what the EU is sending, which we contribute to as well as part of the payment which make to the EU each year.

ThatVikRinA22 · 27/08/2010 17:05

there is always the argument that our troops shouldnt be there in the first place of course.

i cant believe that our government will give aid knowing its not getting to where its needed - surely someone must make sure its not being abused? i cant let that stop me from giving now, because those people need help now.

Notyetamummy · 27/08/2010 18:12

Oh my goodness! I'm so pleased that you have started this thread.

I read this on a 'friend' of mines status. Underneath a person she is friends with had posted "well done name fuck packys".

I cried.

I know I'm maybe a bit sensitive but I really don't understand how a young person can think like this.

thefinerthingsinlife · 27/08/2010 18:20

I'm shocked by the amount of 'friends' that have c&p'd this status. The lack of compassion is disgusting, someone commented on the status 'why should we help them, what have they ever done to help us'!!!!!

I've comment on all of them and i've got so bloody cross about it.

Human kindness what a joke, more like if it doesn't affect me I don't give a shit Angry

clemetteattlee · 27/08/2010 22:35

I just let people cull me by posting the odd political status. I lost a fair few "friends" during the election...

ThatVikRinA22 · 27/08/2010 22:37

i found myself responding to this shit on facebook then i hardly dared go back on for fear of what might be said!
defo time for a cull. my real friends wouldnt post that crap. they might think it but they wouldnt be daft enough to tell me!

2shoes · 27/08/2010 22:42

i must be lucky as no one has posted it on mine

Bunsouttheoven · 28/08/2010 19:15

One of my 'friends' pasted it as her status, I posted her an earful, said it was offensive & now she has deleted it from her wall. Good, hope she felt embarrassed but also that she doesn't lump me if I see her about town!

HairyToedHobbit · 29/08/2010 05:38

I've just posted this reply on my BIL's wall:

Most people on facebook won't copy and repost this, not because they won't have the guts but because they can see how f*%ing stupid this argument is.
Please copy and repost this instead. www.dec.org.uk/item/200

Doubt it will make much difference though Sad. He used to text racist jokes to me until I changed my mobile and didn't tell him the new number.

CheekyLittleSox · 29/08/2010 10:36

I am actually shocked someone would join the group that was posted! makes me sick - how the hell is a soldier NOT a hero!

loopyloops · 15/09/2010 21:23

Oh dear lord, have I got myself into an argument here.... "friend" now de-friended, so that's good, but what madness. Very heated discussion below, if anyone wants a laugh.

All names taken out for the well-being of the muppets everyone involved. Apologies if you were involved in this.

Person 1: The government announced they're going to give £60,000,000 to Pakistan; We have troops maimed & dying through lack of proper equipment, servicemen living on the streets with pathetic MOD pensions, people being denied life saving drugs & a HUGE national debt; Yet we donate... millions that we dont have to other countries before helping our own, 99% of people on FB wont have the guts to copy & repost this.Have you?

Me: 99% of people will have realised that there aren't millions (yes, millions) of children at risk of dying from cholera, typhoid and other diseases in this country. That money will help to stop a whole generation from dying, but would not clear our national debt. Please rethink this.

Person 1: Everyone has different views and opinions tho !!

Person 2: I AGREE PERSON 1! lets sort this shit hole out first. we have enough of our own problems. i reckon they only do this to gain brownie points with UN

Person 3: Person 2 I think you are right

Person 1: Its not just this time they've helped other countries tho they send millions everytime something happens !!

Me: Of course they do. We are a rich country and have an obligation to help countries that aren't able to care for people when a disaster happens. Just because we were born here, are we any better than them? Do we deserve to live and they deserve to die?

Person 3: nobodys saying they deserve to die. why should pensions be cut and our pensioners go without, why should child benefit be cut and children go without, why should nurses be sacked to cut costs and local communities suffer, theres loads we could do with that money to help us through a financial crisis. hundreds of elderly people will die of hypothermia this winter cos they can't afford to have heating on........just a thought

Me: It isn't the same money. We have a fund set aside for aid, which is reserved for this kind of crisis. No matter how much you want pensions improved and better provision for the elderly, this money simply won't be used for that.
I would much rather, for example, we stopped paying to bail out banks and popes visiting etc. before we stooped aid that could save the lives of many, many vulnerable children.

Person 1: someone has allocated that amount tho to go in that fund why so much ...why not put less into the aid fund and more into things for this country and has for the popes visit don't even get me started ...if they helped their own has much has others then maybe people wouldn't moan has much for them doing so !!

Person 2: (me), are you by any chance a politician......seems you have an answer for everything except how to get our arses out of a massive shit hole. dont mean to be funny luv but WE need aid. wheres all the other countries when WE need help or is it this dip shit government that cant see them all pissin up ar backs!

Me: er no, I'm a teacher. We're the sixth richest country in the world. We don't need aid. We need to organise ourselves a bit better.

Me: And while we're on the wild assumptions, do you read the Daily Mail or Express by any chance?

Person 4: I agree with Person 3 & Person 1 there are starving kids over here in this country too. My hubby has seen the third world kids first hand & the money sent to them is spent by the big wigs over there. Charity begins at hhhome

Me: Oh, has he? All of them? Goodness, he must have been busy. And where are these starving children here then? We'd better go and feed them.

Person 1: Yes there are starvin kids theres are families living in poverty families homeless etc etc etc

She didn't say he'd seen them ALL don't start shooting people down when they have there opinion has its just that their opinion you have yours we... have ours !!!

Person 4: Get your head out of your arse (me) & look around. You being a teacher should know about these kinda things or does it not happen in your school. How lucky are the children there. Children are starved & beaten in this country its on the news all the time.

Me: Nice.
We have a welfare state. The only children that are starved or beaten in this country are because they have bad parents or guardians, not because there isn't enough money. I was a neglected child, I had a drug addict dad and a schizophrenic mum, and didn't have enough food or a safe home. Money wouldn't have changed that, foster care did.
I'm going to have to bow out of this now because I don't really want to get into more arguments with people who only care about themselves and people just like themselves. Personally I think that humans are humans and deserve to be fed and kept safe whatever country they come from. I think it's sad that there are people around who think that they deserve more than others because of geography.
The "1%" who do post this ridiculous status do so, in my opinion either because they are ignorant of the sheer scale of the disaster in Pakistan, because they are simply idiots, or are callous or racist. I hope you lot come under the first category. Because I'm not sure though, I won't be responding further.

Person 4: Well I'm neither & as you don't know me I don't think you can comment so it's best you are not responding any further. As Person 1 said we are entitled to our opinion as you are. So I bid u farewell & u have a nice life

Person 1: i aren't saying don't help but if the country helped us out with has much has they helped others we also wouldn't be in the situation we are in ...if the goverment looked after their own in a crisis like they help others maybe many of us wouldn't mind ...oh and i aren't racist either and i aren't an idiot or ignorant either but you think what you want love !!!!!

formerdiva · 15/09/2010 21:40

Grin loopyloops - that's brilliant! I've never seen a FB barney before. (Particuarly like the repeated use of "love" when addressing you. Hilarious!)

FrameyMcFrame · 15/09/2010 21:40

YANBU,

the army is already funded by us, the taxpayer.

They also get paid for doing it.

Why should we give them more money when there are other worthy causes that deserve support.

I hate this 'our troops' buggins too. I don't want to be involved in any wars actually thanks!

Rollmops · 15/09/2010 21:50

How about actually having a life ... outside FB? Stretch, I know...Hmm

FrameyMcFrame · 15/09/2010 21:51

well said loopyloops!

LostInZug · 15/09/2010 21:56

Cheekylittlesox "I am actually shocked someone would join the group that was posted! makes me sick - how the hell is a soldier NOT a hero!"

When he/she's not?
Depends on your definition of hero doesnt it? That's a whole other thread. Why don't you start one? Should be fun

LtEveDallas · 15/09/2010 22:00

"the army is already funded by us, the taxpayer"

Soldiers pay tax too, so are we self funding? Hope so, I might give myself a raise...

It's a stupid status, and is trotted out whenever there is a disaster like Pakistan, Haiti, Katrina et al. It wont have been posted by a soldier (I doubt and I hope), and it wont have been posted by anyone who has recent Afghanistan experience - equipment shortages are rare now - it's equipment failures that are the problem.

It's a very racist status - and it originated some time ago from the BNP. I tend to comment "Gosh, didn't realise you were BNP, sorry, can't associate with you any longer" and de-friend

loopyloops · 15/09/2010 22:02

My favourite bit is "i aren't an idiot". durrr...
