was standing in the queue for the dreaded foot measuring saga this morning, and happened to glance at some cute teeny weeny plimsoles - they started at a six - but was Shock that they were £9

I mean, come on, I have bought 3 pairs for £7.50 and that was more than usual cos i usually manage to find them for £1.99

they will be worn about an hour a week for a couple of terms - and surely there is not much harm going to come to their feet just wearing cheapo ones for that amount of time

Clark's prices always make me go Shock but I worry about damaging DD's feet so kind of just suck it up! BUT - I would not be buying the plimsoles!

Harryan · 26/08/2010 15:24

Oooh no not plimsoles!! The shoe shop in town sells them for a mere £1.99 AND you get a P.E. bag for free!!! :)

Feenie · 26/08/2010 15:24

I will buy them if they fit well - my ds's school where he is about to start make them change into indoor pumps whenever they are inside. So since ds will spend a significant amount of time wearing them, I would like them to be of decent quality if poss.

MrsBadger · 26/08/2010 15:25

some schools insist on plimsolls to be worn all day as 'indoor shoes' - I'd buy Clarks ones for that

Littlefish · 26/08/2010 15:27

My dd's school is the same as Feenie's. They wear their pumps for large parts of the day so I don't mind spending a bit more on them to make sure they fit well. We will be looking at Clarks and Startrights as well as M&S to see which ones fit the best.

missbeehiving · 26/08/2010 15:28

My DS's school make the kids wear plimsolls as their "indoor" shoes all day. So I try to buy something that fits well and gives support to the foot.

Harryan · 26/08/2010 15:35

Ah well that of course is different.

I too would buy the Clarks ones if the kids were in them most of the day.

So if all your DC's wear pumps in school, does that mean you are saving money by not needing to buy 'proper' school shoes? :)

Feenie · 26/08/2010 15:35

We don't do this at my school (am a teacher). We were given the option once years ago, when we had a new building, but rejected the idea of 30 children changing their shoes several times a day in a confined space as complete lunacy, Grin. Still, seems to work for some.

Feenie · 26/08/2010 15:36

No, ds's school insist on outside black school shoes/trainers. Hmm

PerpetuallyAnnoyedByHeadlice · 26/08/2010 15:40

Ah yes, i stupidly had not thought of that - yes, I would pay the money if they were wearing them all day in school, but then i would probably save a fortune on shoes as they would not need such good school shoes just for going to and fro

at my friends (brand new sparkly)school the Dc wear slippers all day

missbeehiving · 26/08/2010 15:44

I think the changing in and out of plimsolls is a waste of time too. They aren't recommended for all day wear either because they get sweaty and encourage foot infections. Hmm. We also have to have school shoes for playtimes too, so no money saved there.

stoppingat3 · 26/08/2010 15:48

That sounds like a bargain, have just had to buy the trainers/shoes for 2XDS. They need, indoor trainers (for PE - not plimsoles) Outdoor trainers, play trainers, wellies, school shoes and football boots. Oh and DS1 had to have special rugby boots for Saturdays as well.
Thank God for the outlet! By the way DS1 is a size 9 (aged 10) so no tax free shoes for him anymore. On the plus side DH now has a fantastic range of shoes to borrow!!! Smile

Harryan · 26/08/2010 15:54

Oh I see. I'll happily stick to my Shoezone cheapies then.
Decent school shoes cost me enough money as it is without having to think about plimsoles aswell lol.

Perpetually That sounds lush and comfy, wearing slippers all day! they should suggest that for offices too.
I could just see DH with a cosy pair of tiger feet under his desk Grin

PerpetuallyAnnoyedByHeadlice · 26/08/2010 15:55

a size nine adult shoe at age ten

here folk complain that their 10 yos are a 5/6

pagwatch · 26/08/2010 15:57

I used to buy clarks as they would fit them on my DS2 for me - I worried as he cannottell me if they are too tight.
Plus Clarks is the closest and I am essentially idle. Actually I think I boughtthe last two pairs from Russell and Bromley or trotters . God knows how much they charge. I didn't really look

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 26/08/2010 15:57

DS has very wide feet. Also they seem very well made. I don't buy them any more (ds is almost 10) but when he was little, I preferred them.

MrsJohnDeere · 26/08/2010 15:57

I've bought them for ds1 for indoor PE. I thought £9 was quite reasonable.Blush

In my defence Clarks is the only place to buy them in my local town, and it saves me the time, hassle and expence of going further afield.

MrsJohnDeere · 26/08/2010 15:58

expense Blush

hmmSleep · 26/08/2010 16:02

Me, I'm just lazy, was in there buying school shoes anyway and couldn't face the thought of dragging dcs around town to find them cheaper elsewhere.

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 26/08/2010 16:09

~I got mine from startrite for £12, didn't think that was too bad

Saltire · 26/08/2010 16:15

stoppingat3 - smae in our house, 12 year old DS1 is into adult size 9s, same as DH!Grin.
We need new school shoes, indoor trainers, outdoor trianers, football boots for him

Callisto · 26/08/2010 16:21

I loathe Clarks, never any choice, always heaving, useless staff. I don't baulk at the prices though, because the shoes fit well.

TBH, I can't imagine that £1.99 shoes are going to last long really.

elphabaisgreen · 26/08/2010 16:25

I bought them two years ago for dd after I traipsed around every shop in town, the next town and also two differnt places where we were on holiday. The size 10's were too small for her everywhere but the next size up fell off her feet.

Finally went to Clarks where she had the smaller size but in a G fitting (wide foot high instep)and they fitted perfectly.

This year I have had the opposite with ds, Clarks, M & S, BHS, Shoezone all too wide for ds. Finally found a pair of £3 ones from Barratts that are really narrow.

roadkillbunny · 26/08/2010 16:26

I buy clarks plimsoles because at dd's school they change into indoor shoes as soon as the get in so that is what is on her feet most of the time, her feet grow slowly so the one pair did her the whole school year. I bought the cheep ones for pre-school who have the same shoe policy, I had to get 4 pairs through the school year as they fell apart. If it were just for pe i wouldn't bother

PerpetuallyAnnoyedByHeadlice · 26/08/2010 16:28

Barratts elpha? i thought they had gone the same way as wollies? Confused
