was standing in the queue for the dreaded foot measuring saga this morning, and happened to glance at some cute teeny weeny plimsoles - they started at a six - but was Shock that they were £9

I mean, come on, I have bought 3 pairs for £7.50 and that was more than usual cos i usually manage to find them for £1.99

they will be worn about an hour a week for a couple of terms - and surely there is not much harm going to come to their feet just wearing cheapo ones for that amount of time

yes size 9 and growing massively, we need to stop feeding him!
I felt so bad about what I was buying the boys that i promised DD a pair of Lelli Kellys thinking they would be about £35 (just a bit more that Clarks right??)
£50 fucking pound. s.e.r.i.o.u.s.l.y Shock Shock. Thank christ she doesn't play football Grin

elphabaisgreen · 26/08/2010 16:30

I think it was Barratts, in fact I'm sure it was but I'm at work and the box/shoes/bag are at home. £3 including a free pump bag (which is of no use as ds has to have an official school one). I did go into a LOT of shops that day.

Clumsymum · 26/08/2010 16:32

Can't buy plimsolls at all, cos ds has wide feet and high insteps, so haven't been able to get plimsols since he was about 5.

Expensive ruddy trainers here !!

elphabaisgreen · 26/08/2010 16:36

Have you tried Start-rite Clumsymum, dd has the same problem. She is fine with Clarks plimsoles and trainers (thought she has trainers only now she is in Year 3) but obnly start-rite shoes are high enough for her instep.

megapixels · 26/08/2010 16:41

I used to buy plimsolls from John Lewis and they were quite cheap. Last year I bought Clarks ones though and there hasn't been much difference.

Feenie · 26/08/2010 16:52

Hmm We still have a Barratts here in Yorkshire.

we still have Baratts too. I get DDs plimsoles from Clarks - they are the only ones which don't fall off

Mrsdoasyouwouldbedoneby · 26/08/2010 17:07

I buy them cos the school don't want you to buy plimsoles due to the sole being to slippy on normal plimsoles. So I buy them instead of cheap trainers (cos the soles are just as rubbish on those). In that sense they are good value. BUT if the school did allow plimsoles I would buy cheap ones. LOL

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 26/08/2010 17:09

Clumsy - my ds has the same weird wide feet, high instep (as do I). Clarks daps were the only ones that fitted.

mumbar · 26/08/2010 17:13

CLARKS - aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh

I too went today to look at school shoes and get measured etc. Was looking for specific type after an earlier thread (AIBI not buying school shoes).

Took ticket no 67, serving no 53. While waiting investigated shoes with removable insoles. Didn't appear to be any so asked a member of staff standing by the ticket machine - seemingly not doing anything.

She replied sorry I can't help you - thinking she meant they didn't do them I asked if she knew where I could get them from - did clarks do them online if I got him measured etc. Her reply 'no I can't help as I have to time how quickly we are serving people you can ask when ds is measured' Angry

I politly pointed out that if she served I could ensure her timing sheet would show quicker service and that I would return the ticket as didn't want to wait 30 minutes if they don't do what I need.

In response YANBU for £9 when worn for PE but I agree with pp that when worn for the day it is in the dc's best interests to have proper fitting shoes.

oneofthosedays · 26/08/2010 18:39

We were happy to get clarks plimsoles for DD as everything else was an apalling fit. She is going into y2 and have just bought her second pair. The first lasted reception and yr 1. I thought that was quite good value personally. She used to wear them for irish dancing as well before we got her proper dancing shoes.

madamearcati · 26/08/2010 19:01

I'll tellyou who.Me! When I've waited n hour to be served in the chidrens shoe department, I just want to get home, not traipse round town with fractious kids trying to save a tenner on a couple of pairs of pumps!

mumbar · 26/08/2010 19:17

Despite my rant above I will be buying clarks plimsolls for ds as he has such a high instep cheap ones are no good - I have tried. However after today I will try startright and will get theres if they have them.

I'm very protective over ds feet as he has 'deformed toes' which could need pinning in the future Sad. He has apt in 2 weeks.

hannahsaunt · 26/08/2010 21:56

My boys have PE four times a week and have terribly slow growing feet so they get their wear over the year.

HarrietTheSpy · 26/08/2010 22:06

Shit. Plimsoles. Where can I get some now that Woolies is gone?! No wonder they can charge £9.

Aliarse · 26/08/2010 22:14

marks and spencres did them for £2.50 a pair at the start of the summer. i bought 2 pairs but they dont fit (a child's 8 and 9) so I have had to buy Clarks after all...

dearprudence · 26/08/2010 22:16

I bought Clark's as DS has wide feet. Plus, it's just where I go for school shoes, just as my mother did before me.

inveteratenamechanger · 26/08/2010 22:17

I bought them for DD's summer shoes (she is 2). They seemed like a bargain compared to the £30 monstrosities on offer elsewhere in the shop. And I think she looks sweet in her little black plimsolls.

DinahRod · 26/08/2010 22:23

Plimsolls fall off my dcs' feet as they are quite narrow, so bought them trainers, cheapish ones for schook, but still more than I wanted to spend

And then I saw Clarks Doodles at £9 and these from M&S which both have a high strap which would have been perfect.

mumbar · 27/08/2010 19:26

After my flounce from clarks yesterday I went back today (lunchtime was quieter!) I bought ds school shoes and tried there plimsols - amazing fit so splashed out as ds high instep this is the only pair that have ever gone over his foot properly.

clippityclop · 27/08/2010 21:32

I opted for Shoezone cheapies this time £1.50 and never again! By the end of the drive home had headache from the chemical stink (old-kipper-and creasote.) Despite a machine wash and thorough drying they still stank a week later. Binned them and bought more in M&S.

shivster1980 · 27/08/2010 22:15

YANBU!!

tassisssss · 29/08/2010 14:28

The £2.50 markies pairs have worked for us, but ds only wears them for gym 2/3 times a week.
