To think that Trip Traps are overprices and overrated

I am probably going to get flamed but here goes, I think that they are, and they don't look stable to boot, and whats this having to purchase a separate harness, it should be included for the price they charge!

I found this highchair on the Argos site for a fraction of the price, and it converts into a mini table and chair, far better than the trip trap, and looks nicer too. It also comes with harness, come on is it too much for them to throw a harness in too.

YANBU, but personally would never have the argos one in my house.

The babydan version is about half the price of the Tripp Trap and does basically the same thing.

throckenholt · 23/08/2010 12:50

well whether they are good value for money or not is very dependent on how they fit into your house (they do take up a lot of space compared to normal chairs).

We have 3 and out 9 and 7 year olds are still using them and I see no reason why they won't be using them in 5 years time as well.

throckenholt · 23/08/2010 12:51

our not out !

singsinthebath · 23/08/2010 12:51

having more grown up children I assumed this was something to do with triptrapping trolls.....

pigletmania · 23/08/2010 12:52

The babydan one looks very similar and more sturdy, so overpriced imo

We have a Tripp Trapp and with hindsight I would say that I would have got a cheaper alternative.

It is stable and handy that it grows with the child but it is expensive and difficult to get my 18 month DD out of.

IMoveTheStars · 23/08/2010 12:54

amazon has thrown up this hauck one too which is even cheaper :)

IMoveTheStars · 23/08/2010 12:55

of course, this is the only highchair you'll ever need Wink

I don't find them unstable, that's why they take up so much room. I would agree they are ugly.
The Baby Dan is nice and made of rubberwood (sustainable forestry).

CerealOffender · 23/08/2010 12:57

i like them

CatIsSleepy · 23/08/2010 12:58

never had a trip trap but if you've found an alternative you like then, hey, go crazy, buy it Grin

pigletmania · 23/08/2010 12:59

I would buy the babydan one though it looks far nicer and cheaper and the one from hauck

I like our Tripp Trapp and never found it be unstable, not difficult to get ds into/out of when he was wee (did have to prop him up with ski socks on either side of him when he was very small Wink).

Ds is now 9 and still uses it at the kitchen table. In fact, it is now set at a level that both dh and I often sit in it and find it more confortable to work at than the "ordinary" chairs.

Personally, I think its blonde wood is very attractive - just goes to show that we all have different tastes :)

SummerRain · 23/08/2010 13:06

We had one like the argos one for the older two.

It's bulky, food gets caught in the cracks and it gets manky and grotty. After two kids ours is falling to pieces and isn't really good for much anymore.

We bought ds2 a tripp trapp and tbh i wish i'd shelled out the money years ago. It's compact, well built, sturdy and looks so much more confortable for ds2 to sit in. He loves being at the table with us and it's one less thing to clean as most of his mess lands on his placemat so i don't have a manky highchair table to scrape off now. Now that he's a bit older the baby seat has come off and he loves climbing up into his seat by himself.

The reason the harness comes seperately is that once they're around 2 it's not needed and some people only buy a tripp trapp for an older child. The price is quite reasonable when you see the quality of the wood and the finish and see how well constructed they are.

ChippingIn · 23/08/2010 13:09

TripTraps are brilliant - yep they are a little pricey, but worth it IMO.

The Babydan is smaller and wont last as long, but if that's OK with you, then it's a good option isn't it.

They last for years as chairs around the house in one way or another :)

Worm - why are you struggling to get your 18 month old in and out of the chair? Do you still have the padding and the bar on it??

Piglet - you trip trap troll you Grin... it's just 'optional' extras isn't it - some dafties buy baby high chairs then a trip trap so they don't need an all inclusive price.

SummerRain · 23/08/2010 13:15

Worm... at 18 months they're old enough to climb up and down themselves Smile

ds2 is 18 months and i took the baby seat off about 2 months ago as it was getting in the way, he still has the harness clipped round him just to be safe but he's perfectly able to manage and loves it whan i tell him 'Go get in your chair [ds2] it's dinner time' and runs straight over to it and climbs up.

zingzillachinchilla · 23/08/2010 13:53

DD (14mo) has a trip trap - we love it. No messy tray, and we never bought the harness, and haven't needed it as she's only in it when we are there. I figured it was better value than a traditional plastic high chair as it will see her through for many years, but I do agree the Baby Dan one is cheaper so even better value.

However, I did buy a cheap high chair for my parents house, and I like it too.... but only because they get to scrape all the lovely little food biys from the tray (part of the perks of being a grandparent Grin)

CwtchyBlueMama · 23/08/2010 13:55

I love mine but then i won it on the AK site so it ne'r cost me a penny.

Lizcat · 23/08/2010 13:56

My sister has three and loves them, however, they are not for me or DD, she used to push againist the table from a very early age and nearly tip the trip traps over at my sister's house. The highchair with the tray built a barrier between her and the table.
I feel like many baby things you either love or hate them.

zingzillachinchilla · 23/08/2010 13:58

meant bits not biys!

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 23/08/2010 13:58

I've got two and I and the kids love them

So nur nur de nur nur Grin

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 23/08/2010 14:09

The mn jury decided long ago that the only highchairs worth buying were the Tripp Trap and the Ikea Antelop.

So I'm afraid YABUGrin

We had an all singing all dancing, cost the earth, totally crap highchair for ds, I gave it away and brought the Antelop which is perfect in every way.

MrsBadger · 23/08/2010 14:11

I've never needed the harness for either child
also found they take up less space than other highchairs as they tuck in underneath the table
we have them in dark wood to match the kitchen table and chairs and tbh they are one of those things that are a pleasure to use every day.
worth every penny of MIL's money imo
