To think that Trip Traps are overprices and overrated

I am probably going to get flamed but here goes, I think that they are, and they don't look stable to boot, and whats this having to purchase a separate harness, it should be included for the price they charge!

I found this highchair on the Argos site for a fraction of the price, and it converts into a mini table and chair, far better than the trip trap, and looks nicer too. It also comes with harness, come on is it too much for them to throw a harness in too.

DH has always thought they were for people who had more money than they knew what to do with.

I took a dislike to them when my friends ds nearly lost a finger in one - freak accident which I can't remember how it happened although I do remember lots of bloodShock

SummerRain · 23/08/2010 14:53

a tripp trapp? Hmm but there isn't anywhere on the chair a child could get its finger stuck!?

unless they were sitting on the ground next to it and the tripp trapp ended up on their finger? Confused

MumNWLondon · 23/08/2010 15:00

I have 2 trip trap chairs, bought after each DC outgrew normal highchair. DD still using it age 7. Have a baby and expect once he needs it (say age 2 once outgrown highchair) DD will be 9 and finished with hers.

That argos one is totally ugly and i would never buy it.

mistletoekisses · 23/08/2010 15:02

YABU

Have two, love them! Look great, both DS's sit at the table with us. Easy to clean. And grow with the DC's. Think they are worth every penny!

mistletoekisses · 23/08/2010 15:02

Oh and the argos one is hideous IMO! Grin

KnitterNotTwitter · 23/08/2010 15:08

We've got a TrippTrap but bought it second hand on eBay - so paid about half price :)

But you've reminded me that I must lower the seat as DS has been growing again :)

We have two, you only need to buy the baby set (front bar, cushion, harness etc) once and then take it off one child's chair and put it on the next. My kids are now 7, 4 and 2 and we use them for meals, doing crafts and painting, and I sit on one of them at the computer. For our third child we bought a cheapo alternative (red kite) which to begin with I was delighted with and wished I hadn't spent so much on the tripp trapps. A year on, I wish I hadn't opted for the cheapie alternative - the varnish on the wood is cracking, the seat bends when DS sits on it and it just doesn't feel as sturdy as the TTs. My oldest TT is now 7 years old and has been scrubbed to within an inch of its life and still looks like new, it's been stood on a million times and has never even wobbled.

DastardlyandSmugly · 23/08/2010 15:13

I also have two and I love them. The kids really like them too.

BubbaAndBump · 23/08/2010 15:14

ebay's the way forward for Tripp Traps (and for pretty much everything for that matter) - they sell cheap as chips there - and sturdy too. So yes, YABU!! :o

4madboys · 23/08/2010 15:15

well al four of my boys have them, we only ever bought the one baby set and just transfered it onto whichever childs chair needed it.

will be getting one for baby no when the need arrises, i love them, the look nice, are easy to keep clean and are good for posture etc and mean we can all sit at the table together.

i hate big ugly plastic highchairs!

BubbaAndBump · 23/08/2010 15:15

(Quick hijack - hello Knitter (wave) (wave) - how you getting on?)

Meglet · 23/08/2010 15:19

YANBU-ish.

We had a trip trap for DS but he couldn't sit up very well even after 6 months old so I stormed off to Mothercare and bought a chicco polly high chair and we e-bayed the trip trap.

TBH I think it would have been great once he hit 12 months old but it was useless for a baby.

YunoYurbubson · 23/08/2010 15:25

YANBU to think that.

I love ours.

:)

FlyMeToDunoon · 23/08/2010 15:28

Two here bought second hand and they are fab.
I also had a babydan which was great but sold it when I found the two tripp trapps. My two youngerst sat in the babydan from an early age and found it comfortable.

greenlotus · 23/08/2010 15:29

We had the Ikea plastic highchair for the messy stage (to about 18mo/2yo I think) and then went over to Tripp trapps, never even bought baby sets but did use a harness briefly. Still being used with kids of 5 & 6 as their main dining chairs, homework, etc.

For my part I think they are safe, well designed and engineered and they suit us well but if you're just looking for any wood-finish high chair and aren't bothered about the ergonomics, then go for what you like - YANBU to have your own view.

FWIW I think people forget that babies grow very fast, in a few weeks a slouching 6mo will be a bouncing 9mo, you can put up with a plastic monstrosity for a year or two but after that you may start caring about your furniture. Meglet I'm the reverse of you, I ebayed my vinyltastic chicco style highchair after one use and bought an antilop then a TT!

Meglet · 23/08/2010 15:31

lotus I should have just stashed the TT in the loft until DS was bigger, but I wasn't very patient Blush and wanted it out the way.

BubbaAndBump · 23/08/2010 15:34

Now I'm beginning to wonder who buys them new? (Other than my friend who needed a red one to match her kitchen :o )

greenlotus · 23/08/2010 16:18

I bought mine new, when they eventually go on ebay I hope to make some of it back!

PYT · 23/08/2010 16:19

Over priced - yes. Overrated - no. Love ours. Got so much use out of it for two children.

PuraVida · 23/08/2010 16:25

mine currently lives in the cellar while DS continutes to sit in his £15 Antilop. he excapes from the tt and using a harness and teh baby rail thing etc etc, just too much hardwork. i hope to bring it out of premature retirement when he is old enough to sit still Hmm

jenniferturkington · 23/08/2010 16:34

We originally had a triptrap and later got a babydan for (linked earlier in the thread). We got the babydan for dc2 as we thought it would be just as good as the triptrap and half the price. We were wrong, the triptrap is much better designed and we wish we'd just got two of them now.

Although, have to admit to being a big fan of the Ikea 'Antilop'- amazing value for money.

castleonthehill · 23/08/2010 16:51

The trip trap is so much better than the baby dan you can adjust it more. To lessen the cost get the cheap ikea one until they are confidently walking then get the trip trap with know baby harness or set. A child that is sat at the right hight to the table will eat better and be more conformable. With some high chairs when you but your seven mouth old in them the tray is level with their shoulders and it will not be the right hight until they are about three and don't need it any moor

teameric · 23/08/2010 16:53

YANBU, the Ikea one is all you need

castleonthehill · 23/08/2010 16:56

question how much did you spend the last time your bought a dinning room chair and how long did it last. A basic trip trap costs about £99 and will match your dinning room your child will be comfortable and will use it for many years to come. My friend children still sit on theirs and they are bit teens
