easy jet morons

I know its been done before but i have just got back from spain and was horrified at easy jet policy of first come first served on the plane.I have flown with them before but dd was under 5 so got the priority thing.
How can it be right for a child to sit alone? We just about managed to get aisle seats side by side but i spent 3 hours buying and unwrapping snacks/drinks passing books and pens and rescuing her from the two young snoggers next to her who were practically shagging on her left arm!!It got me thinking and apart from the obvious safety issues what about the child protection stuff? Who knows what someone could do or say to a child sat next to them out of sight of their parents( am i being really ott now? )
I know they are a budget airline - actually a grand for three flights to spain isnt really that budget- but how do they save mone by not allocating seat numbers?
I will not fly with them again although i have baby due in jan so will be back on priority but stil will avoid them like the plague.
They are actually breaking their own policies as they refuse to take unaccompanied children.

I think you can pay for priority boarding, for £14 each

Ishouldprobablywax · 22/08/2010 17:09

I hate this too-I can't see how hard it would be to seat families together. I see it as a safety issue if something goes wrong with the plain too- ie turbulance or worse- I wouldn't trust anyone to help them.yanbu

sloanypony · 22/08/2010 17:10

First come first served? So you were a bit late to the gate then, were you?

forehead · 22/08/2010 17:13

Don't go by Easy Jet if you have young children. We went to Greece last year and faced the same problem. I spent the whole flight apologising to people when passing food to my dc's.
By the way Easy JeT isn't that cheap and sometmes you're bettet off travelling by non budget airlines

ledkr · 22/08/2010 17:14

pheasant-Yes you can but from what i can tell just gets you throught the gate first and then you have to beat everyone to the plane which is not easy with a child in tow.
Think i will avoid them tbh.Pay the flippin extra.I just seems strange practice to me. Wouldnt happen if you went for a meal. Also every one know they are budget but its still hundreds of pounds and we are still their clients.

Oh, OK. I have never flown with them before, but yesterday a friend and I booked a flight with them to Glasgow, and noticed the £14 thing. (Flights were cheaper than getting a train though!)
Not great to separate children from a carer.

ledkr · 22/08/2010 17:18

no went straight to the gate when called was about halfway down the queue of non speedy borders was about as quick as you can be when pregnant and suffering pelvic disfunction.was obviously a busy flight due to peak season but by the time large groups get seated there are only single seats dotted about.

SkiHorseWonAWean · 22/08/2010 17:18

YABU for the following reasons:

i) it's often cheaper to book a "real" airline

ii) the couple snogging next to your child are unlikely to have damaged her for life

iii) why didn't you just ask someone to move or did you prefer a passive-aggressive heavy sighing and tutting approach?

Morloth · 22/08/2010 17:20

I think you get what you pay for.

Right now we are saving so can't afford a real airline so we are not going anywhere.

I would rather gnaw my own arm off at the shoulder and then beat myself with the bloody stump than fly on a budget airline.

LetThereBeRock · 22/08/2010 17:20

I flew with them for the first time recently and their policy seemed to work quite well.

They let the priority boarders go first then gave them some time to get seated, then let parents with children under 5 go next and again gave them ten minutes to get settled before allowing the rest of the passengers through the gate.

It was all very civilised,no pushing or shoving from anyone.

Our plane wasn't quite full which helped but even so none of the parents had a problem getting seats next to their children.

Perhaps it depends on the flight/airport.

pheasant yes i aggree they do some great prices-went to same place last october and paid peanuts. Thing is when its off peak and cheap the plane is not usually full so no probs.

Agree with Morloth. It's exactly why I refuse to fly budget airlines now that we have a child (and will have another in Dec)

Admittedly, we have also agreed that as this makes flying anywhere pretty feckin' expensive, we will be limiting our holidays to the UK and the once a year Aer Lingus flight to Ireland.

Its Easyjet! In future:

Get to the gate earlier.

If you know you never make the gate on time, pay for priority boarding.

Or, just pay the little bit extra (they work out about the same after all Easyjets hidden charges) and use a proper airline.

ledkr · 22/08/2010 17:40

passive aggressive heavy sighing? Did i catch you on a bad day or are you just one of those mums net people who makes a big row out of every comment?
I did not need to do either actually,as i said i was luckily sat across the aisle from her. It just provoked some thought as to whether it was safe for small children to sit alone.
As for the snogging couple no she was not scarred for life however her arm was squashed causing her some pain and being so aggressive i asked them to get off her. The couple in question were later asked to get off the plane before it took off as the staff suspected they were under the influence of drugs and no that wouldnt have been life threatening to her either but id have chosen for her not to have that experience.

sanielle · 22/08/2010 17:45

Why didn't you switch seats with your daughter?

You get what you pay for so YABU, if you want assigned seating, food, general ease of a flight you need to pay for it. If they offered all of the above it wouldn't be budget, I really can't understand how everyone one gets confused about this.

sanielle · 22/08/2010 17:47

SO in the end, if they got off the plane, you went sat next to her the whole flight then?

because they pretty much took them off at the same time well out for questioning then staff back in with one of them to get bags of course i would have switched seats.
The reason i used easy jet was because of the early flight back today as dh had work this afternoon and not due to the price which as i said was not really cheap compared to the other "better" airlines.
Thanks for your opinions i seem to have annoyed a few people im off to unpack.

sloanypony · 22/08/2010 18:31

So when the 2 people got removed from the flight, you were then able to go and sit next to your daughter, I take it?

I do agree that Easyjet suck assholes though. For that YANBU.

PaulineCampbellJones · 22/08/2010 18:37

Even if you do priority boarding you still have to beat 'the runners'. If getting on an Easy Jet flight was in the 2012 Olympics we would win all of the medals.

Marjee · 22/08/2010 18:41

The priority boarding thing makes no sense at all! We recently flew with a budget airline (not easyjet) and got priority boarding because we have a 9mo ds. You get through the gate and onto the bus first, then it waits for everyone else to pile on so you're no better off! We ended up at the back of the queue to get on the plane struggling to fold the pushchair while holding ds and the bags!

Shaz10 · 22/08/2010 18:43

It's always quite amusing to watch the runners/ priority boarders be first.... onto the bus. :o

bluebump · 22/08/2010 18:44

We only have the option of flying easyjet from our local airport to where we need to go but we have it down to a fine art now. We never pay for speedy boarding but we go through as quick as we can in the next group as DS is under 5. I leave DS with DP and I do the running to get the seats. Every time I travel with them I swear I won't get caught up in all the running but I always do Blush The staff who run the bus if you have to get one are great as when you get to the plane they only open the back doors meaning those that have paid to go first who got on the bus first actually get on the plane first. I would however pay a little more for my ticket to be able to book a seat in advance.
