to think that ADHD/ADD is a load of nonsense?

Are we really producing ever more kids with these conditions or do parents simply need to take back control and realise that, at times, all kids can be obnoxious, loud, defiant, restless and fidgety and that strictly enforced rules for behaviour, lots of TLC, and the occasional smack on the bum may be the way forward?

Claw3 · 23/08/2010 22:34

Hob, you are more than welcome to share the bottle. I think a few other posters are already on it, i talk bollocks when im drunk too.

Claw3 · 23/08/2010 22:35

Fanjo, how many years did it take to train your dd to fake her SN!?

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 23/08/2010 22:36

Am going to bed ! I swore blind I wouldn't get dragged into this thread as it is trolling and fuckwittery of the first order! Just thinking though I haven't had a vodka and coke in years...takes me back to my misspent youth Wink

venusonarockbun · 23/08/2010 22:36

Im not saying ADSD or whatever dosent exist but some parents do take the piss. Dont some of them strive to claim this condition for their children so that they can get the extra 15 mins or so allowed for their GCSE's (as DDs friends parents have done)?

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 23/08/2010 22:38

Venus you clearly have no idea what you are talking about and trust me your ignorance is not endearing on the contrary in fact.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 23/08/2010 22:40

claw-many years but we are hoping for a free car-she is a mini cash cow!

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 23/08/2010 22:42

the 18 mths we have spent in diagnosis will be worth it as she will get 15 mins extra in her exams too!

Claw3 · 23/08/2010 22:44

Yes Venus, some parents just pop to the local diagnosis dispenser and get one. It prints you one in minutes and gives you a voucher for a free McDonalds coke.

venusonarockbun · 23/08/2010 22:45

I am not saying ADHD dosent exist- im sure it does.

2shoes · 23/08/2010 22:46

I must tell dd to stop being a lazy cow and get out of her wheelchair

yeah, you just phone up the dwp and say 'look ere,my kid has adhd' and they say 'ok then, have lots of money and a car'

Goblinchild · 23/08/2010 22:50

Learning to drive is a mechanical skill, and the Highway Code is a book full of rules to learn and keep to. You don't have to communicate with anyone else, unlike travelling by public transport.
My DS can't wait to learn to drive.

ASD is not ESN, and the term ESN is no longer used in this country as it is offensive and ignorant. I used it in my post as a historical reference.

Lougle · 23/08/2010 22:51

venusonarockbun - do you see that for those of us who struggle day-to-day just to keep going, with the prospect of years of caring for our children in an intense, constant way, the one example of something not being quite as it seemed really isn't helpful?

I dread the next 14 years, as my daughter grows up. Every day I see signs that her younger sisters are overtaking her in their development, and the future is quite a scary thing.

I would trade the DLA we get and the Statement of SEN that she has and the Special school place and the extra tax credits 1000 times over to have my little girl able to grow up normally.

Goblinchild · 23/08/2010 22:52

Mine gets 25% extra in his exams, and a prompter. Otherwise you get a six page essay on question one and he runs out of time. He'll be fine once he gets to PhD level.

venusonarockbun · 23/08/2010 22:53

Thank you Goblinchild. Im not a world expert on these conditions. I am willing to learn about these things from other Mners - i Just can not understand how a child can go from not being able to go to the cinema unaccompanied to driving unaccompanied within a matter of weeks.

Lougle · 23/08/2010 22:55

venus, as you ask, children with SN often have sensory processing difficulties, which mean that they find some environments hard to cope with. A cinema generally has dimmed lighting, loud noises, crowded seating and flashing images. That can overload the child's sensory system and they 'melt down'.

Goblinchild · 23/08/2010 22:58

You can control the environment and all the factors inside your car. Predictable and safe.
You can't in a cinema, or a train or a bus.

TheLadyEvenstar · 23/08/2010 23:00

grrrrrrrrr someone pass the vodka please!!

venusonarockbun · 23/08/2010 23:01

Thank you to those of you who are helping me to understand this unlike those who have told me to 'fuck off' and I am taking shit.

Claw3 · 23/08/2010 23:03

Venus, perhaps he has limited language or cannot cope with having to talk to strangers.

Perhaps he cannot go to the toilet, manage to do button, zips etc by himself or has continence issues.

Perhaps he doesnt know what bus to get on or make reversals in number so a number 16 is a 61 to him.

Perhaps he becomes very anxious in social situations.

To name but a few.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 23/08/2010 23:04

well you weren't very understanding about the family you know, were you? Not very charitable.

Goblinchild · 23/08/2010 23:04

Put it this way, DS won't be driving for another year or so, but I could describe down to the last detail what his car will look like, smell like, feel like, what music will be on the CD player, what will be in the boot and side pockets and all the rest.
He will create his own haven and drive it wherever he wants to go.
I could list those places too.Smile

mumeeee · 23/08/2010 23:04

Venus, To get extra time a child has to be assesed by a qualified person and they have to follow certain rules in the assesment. You can not get extra time if you don't need it.
