to not want to have a cake for dd "early" b'day party with close family.

Okay I'm sure most people will think I'm being silly here, but PIL and other close family are all coming over 2mro at MIL request to celebrate dd's 2nd b'day.

She won't be 2 for another week but they'll be away on her b'day so coming early.

That's ok, but AIBU to not want to take away from her actual b'day by making such a fuss 2mro.

I want her b'day to be really special and I just feel it'll be a let down if we go the whole hog with a cake twice. That's going to be the only thing that distiguishes it as her b'day given she will be opening presents tomorrow.

oh stop being pathetic

children eat cake

choufleur · 21/08/2010 18:04

Just have two cakes. She'll love the attention. DS normally ends up having two cakes - one for his party and one for family tea.

ineedapoo · 21/08/2010 18:05

she is 2 let her have 2 parties

UnholyMoley · 21/08/2010 18:07

Stop being precious. A two year old is not going to care (and will in fact relish the attention) of two parties and two cakes.

Happens a lot in our house, because the august birthday means that dd2 has a party when school finishes and before all her friends disappear on holidays.

I guess you're probably going to have to get used to that too, in the long run Wink

Enjoy!

hocuspontas · 21/08/2010 18:09

Don't most children have two or more 'birthdays'? Ours always have. A celebration with my parents with cake and presents. Then at our house on the day. Then PiLs the day after or whenever we could get there. Don't let it spoil the birthday! Tell your dd what a lucky girl she is having TWO celebrations!

SouthMum · 21/08/2010 18:09

I think its a lovely idea, dont be so miserable!

cupcakesandbunting · 21/08/2010 18:10

Would you rather they farked orf without so much as a nod to her birthday? Hmm

My dad and stepmum usually go away for christmas so I make sure that DS does a christmassy thing with them before they go. Don't see your problem but I suspect it is about more than two cakes...

Littlefish · 21/08/2010 18:13

Oh, you old misery guts. Have a cake and small celebration tomorrow. She hasn't got a clue when her birthday really is. You're being ridiculously precious. Wink

PinkyMe · 21/08/2010 18:15

cupcakes Yes it is, and I guess I shouldn't try and make a stand over this. Will only make me look daft.

Righty ho, off to bake a cake and put on my suit of armour for tomorrow.

Oh dear god.

ChippingIn · 21/08/2010 18:22

I can understand that you don't want the 'shine' taken off of her 'real' party, but really, it wont. She'll just have two cakes and two lots of fun.... it's not like she'll roll her eyes and go 'Oh God, not another birthday cake, I did that two weeks ago!'

Come on, smile, it's only one day and they'll be away on holiday and you get to enjoy her actual birthday without them [grin

SeaTrek · 21/08/2010 18:24

YABU

I think most years my son has ended up with two cakes and two birthday celebrations for one reason or another...

It is great that your MIL wants to celebrate her birthday with her, even if it is a little early.

YANBU if you don't want to buy two cakes though but if PIL bring one - enjoy!

QuantaCosta · 21/08/2010 18:24

Mine tend to have three cakes. One on their actual birthday, one at their birthday meal with GPs and one at the party they have with friends.

She will love having two days where a fuss is made of her so what's the problem??

Squitten · 21/08/2010 18:30

Seriously....?

My DS is going to be 2 next month and he hasn't got the first clue what his birthday is about. Can't think of anything he'd like more in life than two lots of presents and two lots of cake!

traceybath · 21/08/2010 18:32

She's 2 - it could be her birthday every day with cake and presents and she wouldn't have a clue.

Stop being silly and appreciate so many people are keen to help her celebrate Smile

withorwithoutyou · 21/08/2010 18:35

My DD was 2 the week before last.

We had the grandparents over on the Saturday and then celebrated her birthday on our own on the Weds.

I made a cake, we started eating it on Saturday and there will still plenty left on the Wednesday!

wigglesrock · 21/08/2010 18:36

My pils are always away over at least one of my dds birthdays. We usually have a cake for them not a full blown party but sausages, sandwiches and a cake with a candle on it, although you are being very good in baking two, I can hardly get the cocktail sausages organised!! Tescos for me

withorwithoutyou · 21/08/2010 18:36

SOrry there was plenty left on the weds.

TBH, I sweated blood over her cake, so I needed the audience to appreciate it Grin

My dd had two cakes when she turned 2 a few months ago - an In the Night Garden kindly provided by granny, with her gps and family in Ireland, and one on her actual birthday baked by me. It was great to have two cakes and celebrate her bday twice!

LucyLouLou · 21/08/2010 20:01

I'm surprised you had the guts to bring this to AIBU Pinky! I see where you're coming from, but YABVVU if you were to put your foot down with this one. Glad to see there will be a cake now lol.

PinkyMe · 21/08/2010 20:18

Smile Lucylou, I knew I'd get slaughtered, but I guess sometimes I just need to be told how silly I'm being.

It's hard as I find my MIL very domineering. She is the sort of person who thinks it's okay to rearrange my furniture while I'm out. And yes sometimes it makes me just want to be childish and get my own back, but I've got all of you to stop me from stooping to that level.

I wish I had nothing to freak out about as you obviously do. Stop being pathetic.
She's 2. She won't have a clue about when her birthday actually is.
Jeez....Confused

CatIsSleepy · 21/08/2010 20:21

2 birthdays, what could be better? Grin
glad you have seen the light, and I am sure the first cake won't take the shine off her real birthday at all. make it a smaller cake first time if you're that bothered Grin
