I know they charge extortionate interest rates so had a Google and am disheartened that they can take advantage of people like they do.

Sad Angry

They have just opened one here. It's replaced the old Woolworths. :(

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 14/08/2010 14:38

Agree - but sadly, until one of our Government's actually stands up to the banks, Brighthouse and the like meet a need.

Sad
Meglet · 14/08/2010 14:41

yes, I can see sometimes it's the only way people can get essentials for the house. Tis shit Sad.

It's going to get worse with sodding Brighthouse in town.

sharbie · 14/08/2010 14:42

don't worry too much ours is always empty - will close down soon

bytheMoonlight · 14/08/2010 14:44

What is Brighthouse?

scurryfunge · 14/08/2010 14:46

Just googled it as I didn't know what it was......just encouraging debt it seems.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 14/08/2010 14:47

It's one of these places where you can buy furniture, white good etc on credit, with no checks and at horrendous interest rates. Horrible places.

Meglet · 14/08/2010 14:47

sharbie thats good to know Smile. Maybe ours won't last.

btmoonlight It's a hellish 'weekly payment' store that charges huge amounts of interest for household white goods / electronics. Best example I've seen so far is a playstation costing £340 brand new in a normal shop would cost £700 in Brighthouse over a few years Shock!

My grammar is crap at times.. Blush

stressedHEmum · 14/08/2010 14:51

In our town, Brighthouse is one of the busiest shops in town. WE have a lot of poverty here and these people are just taking advantage of that.

In our old place, our next door neighbour got almost everything from them, before they changed their name. She missed two week's payment and they came to take back her kid's beds, her suite, her telly, the wardrobes, the lot.

It doesn't sound like much, when they say something costs a pound a week or whatever, but when you have a lot of things it's ludicrous. And when you take the long term view, it's practically criminal.

Meglet · 14/08/2010 14:55

I've just looked at their website and it does seem to show their true prices...

I'd want it gold plated if I paid that

scurryfunge · 14/08/2010 14:57

When I first started out in my own home on a low icome I was happy to buy second hand or wait.....why the insistance of everything new?

Meglet · 14/08/2010 15:02

scurry Now I've thought about it I'm on my 3rd hand me down TV in my house. And I didn't have one for 4 months when I first moved in, lots of Radio 4 in those days.

I suppose fridge, washing machine and cooker are pretty essential and when they break most people are stuffed and that have to get one whatever way they can.

OP posts:
scurryfunge · 14/08/2010 15:05

Yes, I suppose some goods have to be reliable....though my washing machine and fridge were second hand and I have always sold on my old stuff too.

HappyMummyOfOne · 14/08/2010 15:55

Why hacked off? There are shops I dont like but thats my choice and I just dont use them. If everybody saved/bought second hand/freecycle then these type of companies wouldnt exist as they would have no customers.

ChippingIn · 14/08/2010 16:10

That type of shop is disgraceful, relying on the most vulnerable sector of society to make a hefty profit.

NarkyPuffin · 14/08/2010 16:15

£304 for a king size, open spring, 2 drawer divan bed from dreams (including delivery)

£384.99 for a double, open spring, 2 drawer divan bed from Bensons (including delivery)

£188.94 for a budget range, double, open sprung, 2 drawer divan bed from Argos (including delivery)

£304.94 for a SilentNight 'deepquilt' double, 2 drawer divan bed from argos (including delivery)

£432.38 (cash price) for a double, open spring, 2 drawer divan bed from Brighthouse.

To be paid over 156 weeks at £3.99/week costing £622.44. If you go for thier 'optional service cover' you're paying over £900!

They use artificially inflated 'cash' prices to keep the APR under 30%.

It's a business not a charity but when it comes to credit we do have regulation in this country for a reason- though it's obviously inadequate. If they turned up at people's houses to collect with pitbulls on chains and baseball bats at least they'd be more honest about what they are.

LucyLouLou · 14/08/2010 16:17

These shops are excellent in their service, but horrific in their execution, if that makes sense to anyone? Paying for things by the week is brilliant for anyone in a difficult position, but the interest rates are borderline theft to me. And what makes the whole thing even worse is that generally, those with less money (and therefore in need of Shitehouse assistance) are going to be those with less ability to understand how much they are putting themselves in debt just for the sake of a fucking piece of furniture.

Grrr this annoys me.

thelunar66 · 14/08/2010 16:18

the one in our town never looks to have any customers whenever I've walked past, just bored staff. Don't think it will last long.

Cashconverters is always packed though.

Moominfamily · 14/08/2010 16:18

They are horrible. A friend once worked in one in a neighbouring town, and resigned after her manager PUNCHED a customer who was late paying and came into the store. The customer did not press charges as his debt was written off to keep him quiet- the store just wanted the incident hushed up. My friend couldn't work there any more after that.

They are all a disgraceful way of making money from the poorest in society. Not as bad as these pay day loan places, but the same kind of vile exploitation of the very poor.

Marjee · 14/08/2010 16:22

Agree with chippingIn, they are vultures preying on the vulnerable. I'd never use them but when I turned 18 I knew nothing about interest rates or budgeting so I really think I could have got into a lot of debt with a company like this while thinking I'd got a really good deal.

NarkyPuffin · 14/08/2010 16:31

£605.76 (cash price) for this faux leather double bed frame.

£349.99 for this real leather double bed frame.

Both places charge a lot for credit but Brighthouse is actually fucking people on the 'cash' price.

dilemma456 · 14/08/2010 17:22

YANBU I hate them. I know someone who went to them for a fridge and ended up being charged at least twice what she'd have paid in Currys and the thing had worn out by the time she'd finished paying for it :(

dilemma456 · 14/08/2010 17:36

Have a look here to see what some customers and ex staff say about them

stealthpony · 14/08/2010 18:30

If I were PM I'd shut the lot of them down. So immoral it's untrue!
