Why is MTV not censored like everything else on TV?

AlisonDubois · 13/08/2010 20:31

My DH watching(drooling) over MTV about 6ish this evening.
DS(8) and DH(3) come downstairs and start watching. Then they both start dancing and singing 'This sex is on fire'. Feel a bit wrong about this but DH just laughs.
Then a song I've never even heard before comes on...some disco pop thing. OMG, the women on it might as well be completely f*ing naked. There they are gyrating and thrusting...singing about getting hot and dirty on the dancefloor.
I just sat like a goldfish amazed. DH didn't bat an eyelid.
This shit should not be on TV until after 9pm. Why is it not censored FFS?
AIBU?

You are so NBU....I am horrified by what I see on MTV and the normal pop channels...in fact, I dont let DS see any of it

I fail to see why being practically nekkid is required in order to make a hit pop video

What happened to the good ole days where they just sang - fully clothed and their talent spoke for itself!

AlisonDubois · 13/08/2010 21:10

I remember my dad laughing about Mary Whitehouse years ago, but I so totally agree with her now.
I have nothing against music channels and pop videos...but not when they are on TV at the same time that my DC's have just finished their tea.
We would normally have been watching Ben and Holly or Humf but DH was 'surfing' and came across MTV.
This shit should be on after the warershed...do not want my 3 yr old sing about sex.
And no I am not a frigid cow, just a worried parent. What is this stuff saying to my kids?

dd was a rugby mascot once. the cheerleaders wore hotpants and crop tops.

'i went on the pitch with the captain mummy and there were single ladies there.'

Confused Confused

then i saw beyonce's 'single ladies' video and the penny dropped..

KarmaAngel · 13/08/2010 21:14

YANBU It annoys the crap out of me that I can't watch most of the music channels in the day whilst my dds are around. The only channel I can seem to put in is VH1 Classic which usually has 80's mixtape or 90's tunes on.

It's absolutely appalling the way music videos are so explicit now. I'm all for a bit of tongue in cheek, but it's gotten ridiculous now. It's like watching porn. And to think I did my GCSE Sociology coursework on the horror of Eva Herzigova in the Wonderbra advert back in 1994. That was shocking then. No it's completely tame. Even Duran Duran's Girls on Film video which was banned in the 80's is completely tame to the stuff of today. It saddens me that soon I won't be able to protect my dds from being exposed to this stuff.

Animation · 13/08/2010 21:15

RIGHT !!

This shir SHOULD be on before the watershed.

KarmaAngel · 13/08/2010 21:16

Now not no

LucyGoose · 13/08/2010 21:18

AlisonDubois you are kidding right?
MTV is a music video channel, not Teletubbies. Its not MTV's problem to monitor what your kids get exposed to, that is your job.
You should be mad at your husband for laughing and letting it happen, rather than getting upset at the channel that is there to do what all channels do, make money on the ad breaks from teens who buy all that stuff.

Just be more vigilant at home and that way the kids won't be tempted to start singing to it or wanting to dance around to it and you can keep them away from it at least while you have more control over them.

Tee2072 · 13/08/2010 21:19

Its cable. They do what they want.

Change the channel if you don't want your kids to see it. Be a parent.

It would make a nice change.

AlisonDubois · 13/08/2010 21:24

Yeah change the channel, don't let them watch. They are not allowed to watch TV after 9pm...that is when adult stuff is supposedly aired, not at 3pm in the afternoon.
I have the radio on in the car. What am I supposed to listen to, Classic FM?
It's ridiculous that we have to 'monitor' TV all the time. I was under the impression that anything with adult content would not be aired before the watershed...what a joke.

MillyR · 13/08/2010 21:30

Some of the stuff they show should not be on before the watershed. They have been repeatedly warned and they have been fined for breaking the law.

So while it is a parent's responsibility, it is also MTV's responsibility to adhere to the law, which they don't do.

It is ludicrous to think children of, for example, 9-13 are only going to watch children's tv. That is why we have a watershed.

PussinJimmyChoos · 13/08/2010 21:31

No no no....its all wrong...its practically pornographic and its no coincidence that body image amongst teenagers is at an all time low, with plastic surgery rates increasing

I really do think these kinds of videos have a part to play in it and yes, we can police the channels but quite frankly, why should we have to??

I mean even pre watershed programmes are getting a bit too close to the bone these days and I don't like DS seeing them - eg if Hollyoaks is on, I will turn it over - I mean half the female cast dress like street walkers!

AlisonDubois · 13/08/2010 21:50

Do not let my DC's watch ANY of the soaps (again pre-watershed). The storylines are just ludicrous and the characters are either sleeping around or taking drugs. This I can control....music I can't.
Went to DS1's sschool summer disco at end of term. All the kids were dancing around and really enjoying themselves. But quite a few of the parents said they felt 'uncomfortable' with the choice of music.
So I am not the only parent who does not like the way DC's are able to access this stuff.
I mean, there I am driving to school, concentrating on the traffic. Next thing I realise that DS1 is singing about taking a ride on a disco stick. I thought the media was supposed to be monitored!

Damned right it should be be censored. What the hell is going on? !!

AlgebraRocksMySocks · 13/08/2010 21:53

YANBU. simples.

MillyR · 13/08/2010 21:56

'Ofcom has fined MTV £255,000 for "widespread and persistent" breaches of broadcasting regulations.

Ofcom said: 'Pop video and entertainment channels like those controlled by MTV Networks attract large numbers of viewers under 15, and so have a responsibility to these children and their parents to ensure their compliance arrangements are robust and effective.

Ofcom found the music and entertainment channels TMF, MTV France, MTV UK and MTV Hits breached rules relating to protecting children from unsuitable material, observing the watershed and broadcasting offensive language before the watershed.'

onimolap · 13/08/2010 22:03

Has anyone else noticed that Channel 5 is now showing CSI in the middle of the afternoon in the school holidays?

It's a main terrestrial channel ffs, and way too graphic for daytime - how does one explain a gruesome death to a 6yr old who was only trying to put in a video All By Herself?

AlisonDubois · 13/08/2010 22:13

My neice is 13 and her mum watches CSI...neice has seen some and does not like it...gives her nightmares.
So why are they showing it in the middle of the day?
It's all so ludicrous. I do not want my kids to sing songs about sex, just because they heard them at the school disco. No f*ing wonder girls have kids at 12 is it really?

This reminds me of Easter Sunday. We had some family around and where sitting in the Lounge. We decided to listen to some music so put on the TV. Next thing we have Rihanna (not sure if that's right) and a whole bunch of woman gyrating around in their underwear. I was not happy and suggested we change the channel, I have a 9 year old daughter and really don't appreciate the message this sends. Our cousins, with two boys, did not get why I have a problem with this as apparently that's what kids are watching these days. Basically I was told I was being old fashioned and we need to accept that the world is changing and go with it. Needless to say it got quite heated.

Does anyone else think that this is eventually going to end up with these people wearing 3 stars and, well, where do we go from there?

chandellina · 13/08/2010 22:24

don't you have the option to block certain channels on your telly? i only have freeview, so no MTV - thank god - but i can choose to only store certain channels.

not saying this is a total solution, but surely you have control in your own home?

sadly it is definitely considered normal by quite young children to see near naked women gyrating all over seedy men.

AlisonDubois · 13/08/2010 22:24

really pisses me off that the Govt cannot see the corrrellation between the media showing this stuff 24/7 and children having sex earlier.
Are they completely blind or what?
And as for that Rhianna video...should be banned (so MW would say).

SayItOnce · 13/08/2010 22:36

It doesn't bother me.
DD (8) watches the music channels all the time.
I honestly think it goes over her head, both the videos and lyrics.
Her and her friend make up dances, and there's not a sexy move in them.
They both adore Justin Bieber, in a very innocent way.
They like him and want to dance to his songs.

DD will be 9 later this month, I went to see Bros when I was 10.

I watch with them, and dance with them, and I can assure you there is nothing odd in my home, just kids enjoying current music.

In fact, if I had my way, it'd be all John Barrowman, Billy Joel and ChigagoGrin

chandellina · 13/08/2010 22:41

i don't see how it can go over anyone's heads that the women aren't wearing clothes and grinding over men!

AlisonDubois · 13/08/2010 22:41

Yes but Justin Bieber is just a child himself...he is not writhing around in his underwear....or is he?

OP posts:
AfricanExport · 13/08/2010 22:49

The thing in the young girls love to dance and where do you think they are learning the moves if they are watching this trash? I don't won't to go to the primary school disco and watch the little girls gyrating thanks.

Animation · 13/08/2010 22:50

SayItOnce - well if the sexy moves are going over your 8 year old's head maybe you should be worried. She could be in trauma.
