Why is flat pack so hellish!!!

FickleFairy · 12/08/2010 15:15

So, we are putting together furniture for DS's new bedroom and the amount of boxes and packaging and polystyrene is making me want to scream the place down but even putting that aside...... who the hell writes/designs the instructions!?!?!?!

Seriously, I have never had a good set of flat pack instructions! DH is having huge rant saying he is never buying flat pack again, I have antagonised this further by saying we wouldn't get this huge cabin bed etc through the door if it had been fully erected before hand Wink.

It's from Next so not exactly the cheapest place in the world, although granted, not extortionate either.

I want to know who does these instructions and I want to make them suffer accordingly!

Look in your yellow pages, there are people you can pay to do this for you :)

If not, then lay it all out carefully and line up the screws/bolts etc. Ponder over the instructions and then leave it for DP to do.

sorry, not very helpful BlushGrin

sapphireblue · 12/08/2010 15:17

because it was designed by a man. And the instructions were written by a man. With poor eyesite and no idea what a comma or full-stop is for.

moonstorm · 12/08/2010 15:19

YABU - I love it! Never have any problems Grin

CheeseandGherkins · 12/08/2010 15:19

I've done loads from Ikea and other places too and never had a problem. The Ikea instructions are particularly good.

lolapoppins · 12/08/2010 15:20

Oh lord I hate flat pack!

When we loved here it was from a tiny two bed newbuild to a four bed house, we had no furntiture apart from the sofas and our beds so we had to go to ikea to get everything.

I had ten solid days of flatpack hell making countless wardrobes, chests of drawers, desk, dining table, sitting room furniture .....I felt like jumping out of a window at some points! Dh useless and is so crap and gets so irrational while making then it's poinless making him do it.

I hate the instructions, the diagrams are always so shit.

lolapoppins · 12/08/2010 15:21

Moved, not loved bloody I phone making me sound thick again.

Graciescotland · 12/08/2010 15:22

I'll hold 'em down whilst you kick 'em Wink Seriously though it can be a nightmare we got a wardrobe for the nursery and DH was so annoyed he adjusted the hinges with a hammer...

FickleFairy · 12/08/2010 15:22

Noooooooo Way Cheese! DH said this morning we could have gone to Ikea and we both looked at each other with that knowing look as we have always said Ikea are the worst lol.

It has taken 4 hours to do the bed between us. Now there are at least 2 runs to the tip to do and we have the wardrobe and drawers to do yet.

Now where is that vodka.........

sorry, I'm with moonstorn, I love flat pack stuff and growl at dp if he tries to help me build it.

they are kind of like marmite though, love or hate.

good luck!

toccatanfudge · 12/08/2010 15:27

oh - I love flat pack - where are you - my kids are doing my head in - I'll come and do it all for you Grin

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 12/08/2010 15:29

I love flat pack.

mistletoekisses · 12/08/2010 15:30

Another love the flat pack here.

Lay all the pieces out. Check you have all that should be in the box. Separate the screws into piles. Move the packaging out of the area you are building (do not chuck it incase you need to return something). If you have nice flooring/ carpet lay a proective cloth on the floor.

Take a deep breath. And let the fun begin. Oh and make sure you have a good quality screwdriver (if you need it), otherwise you are making it all a lot harder than it needs to be.

Good luck! Is easier than it looks! Promise. Grin

SlobbyBOB · 12/08/2010 15:31

No problems for me Just read the instructions and read them again. Just make sides, ends etc the same as in diagrams.

SoupDragon · 12/08/2010 15:34

I love building flat pack stuff!

toccatanfudge · 12/08/2010 15:35

I built 2 bookcases, a chest of drawers, and 2 bedside cabinets one afternoon before exH came home from work.....I was 8 months pg at the time.

Would have done the triple wardrobe as well but I couldn't physically reach to hold the ends together Grin

FickleFairy · 12/08/2010 15:35

How can anyone "love" it???????

You are all very odd Wink

It's the sense of accumplishment and triumph over shit instructions when I finally get the fecker to stay up, that's what's to love! Wink

Mowiol · 12/08/2010 15:39

I don't love it. And FickleFairy - hope there isn't a left-over screw at the end Wink

ChippingIn · 12/08/2010 15:57

I love flatpack too - it's like a life size jigsaw puzzle - often with the bits missing as well :)

I have 4 flatpack items in the car - just summoning up the energy to go and bring them in.

(Lidl - sale today, 2 side tables & 2 bedside tables - perfect :) )

OrmRenewed · 12/08/2010 15:59

You need my DH. He can build anything with the minimal of hassle and swearing Grin

I am thinking of hiring him out.

FindingMyMojo · 12/08/2010 16:01

You just have to lay it all out & approach logically, one step at a time (though like a receie do read all the instructions beforehand). It also helps to have 'can do' BIL to hand. Good luck

mrspear · 12/08/2010 16:12

i love it too - reminds of playing with lego model kits as a child

AbsOfCroissant · 12/08/2010 16:18

I love it too. And for the measly fee of £1000 per item of furniture, I will do it for you!

lucky1979 · 12/08/2010 16:55

I'm glad there are other people here who love flatpack! I think it's great, like a big puzzle.

I get gumpy when DH does it instead of me.

ChippingIn · 13/08/2010 22:33

I bought two (three drawer) bedside tables and two coffee tables from Lidl the other day (classy I am! LOL), flatpack... it has just taken 2 hours, yes TWO hours to put 1, yes ONE of the bedside tables together.... hopefully the next one will only take half the time! But it's not getting done tonight either way!
