Why is flat pack so hellish!!!

So, we are putting together furniture for DS's new bedroom and the amount of boxes and packaging and polystyrene is making me want to scream the place down but even putting that aside...... who the hell writes/designs the instructions!?!?!?!

Seriously, I have never had a good set of flat pack instructions! DH is having huge rant saying he is never buying flat pack again, I have antagonised this further by saying we wouldn't get this huge cabin bed etc through the door if it had been fully erected before hand Wink.

It's from Next so not exactly the cheapest place in the world, although granted, not extortionate either.

I want to know who does these instructions and I want to make them suffer accordingly!

I love flat pack too. It's like lego for adults.

I love putting together flat pack items too. My Brother helped me to do DD2's bed. I had to explain what went where to him! Should have done it myself! Grin

I hated Lego as a child (and as an adult now that DS is into it), but I quite like a bit of flat-pack furniture.

I agree with those who say read the instructions. I also have lots of little bowls and count the screws and sort them into the bowls. It makes it much quicker as you can just reach out and get the right one straight away. Remembering to charge up the electric screwdriver helps too.

Electric screwdriver, electric screwdriver....

The good thing about the Livarno stuff is that all the screws etc are exceptionally well labled - might still be at it if they weren't!

I love flatpack too!

I love the easy sense of accomplishment, like I could never build a piece of furniture from a log, but if I assemble a bookcase, I FEEL like I made it LOL

Not so cute when you step on them with bare feet FGT. Wink

I hate it, detest it. I've managed to put a few bits together but even though I start with exactly what the instructions say I should have I always end up wtih leftover bits Hmm

Thankfully my colleague is fantastic at it and willingly pops round with his screwdriver for the cost of a bottle of wine (I'd give him a case to be honest!)

I love it too. I once built a double wardrobe from Ikea, by myself, finishing at 3am. When I went to lift it up, prior to hanging the doors, I couldn't budge it more than an inch. I refused to give in, however, and gradually wedged book after book under each of the edges, one at a time, until I could tip it back against the wall. Made a hell of a crash when it settled... I think they give you spares - that's what the leftovers are. Either that, or they're for decoration...

invisibleink · 14/08/2010 23:58

OOH! I love flat pack I dream of IKEA!

"I have antagonised this further by saying we wouldn't get this huge cabin bed etc through the door if it had been fully erected before hand"

Cabin beds that you don't do yourself are delivered as flatpack and the blokes come and assemble it for you.

By the way: Ikea furniture is much better to do if you buy yourself a decent set of Metric Allen Keys, price five pounds from a car place or B&Q tool department, rather than the silly things they give you. If you have an electric screwdriver, a set of Allen bits for that will cost about three pounds and make things even easier.
