to think that a consultant should live in a reasonably clean house

The property next door to us has been let for about a year now. This weekend they have moved out and the owners have just come round with an industrial cleaning firm to have the house gutted.

They offered me a peep inside as they were horrified at the disgusting filthy state of the property. We have never really spoken to the family as they pretty much keep themeselves to themeselves, although we did try to make conversation when they moved in but the wife doesnt speak English and the husband made no effort to acknowledge anyone in our road even though numerous people have said hello. They told me that he is a consultant at a hospital and couldnt beleive the state of the house which he has been living in.

The house is a lovely 4-bed detached and was rented to them in an immaculate state. Obviously the owners have retained the bond to pay for the cleaners but it horrifies me that a consultant in a hospital could live in this squalor. The carpets and walls were awful, the bathroom and kitchen looked like theyd never had a clean in all the time they were there.

What a nosey, gossipy post!

ZZZenAgain · 09/08/2010 10:47

think it happens more often than you would assume with rented accommodation. I agree, hard to understand how people can be content to live in a home that is filthy. I'm not the best housewife but I need tidiness and general cleanliness around me. Maybe they spent a lot of time out of the home. Did they have dc?

MrsWobbleTheWaitress · 09/08/2010 10:48

It's horrible for any tenants to treat a rented house like that, but I have no idea whatsoever what his occupation has to do with it!

YABU!

belgo · 09/08/2010 10:48

He is a peaddofilediatrican as well?

Agree, nasty gossipy post.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 09/08/2010 10:48

Why on earth is it any of your business?

And WTF has someone's job got to do with the state of their house? As long as he's not operating on the filthy kitchen table then does it matter?

YABU and a nosy mare to boot.

gingernutlover · 09/08/2010 10:48

assuming he washes his hands before dealing with a patient it shouldnt matter should it ...?

it always amazes me that some people can live in pig sty's though - I think it shows a lack of self respect and poor attitude towards life to be honest. To not keep your house clean to basic standards is to me a sign of laziness.

wagonweel · 09/08/2010 10:48

lol wowu, not nosey at all. I didnt snoop or anything, the owners called me over to look. Couldnt really care how anyone lives really but if they are working in a hospital with close proximity to patients then surely hygene is an issue.

How does someone's job relate to how clean their house should be? What a strange (and pretty unpleasant) post.

withorwithoutyou · 09/08/2010 10:50

"They offered me a peep inside"

and you took them up on it!

Outrageously nosey! Is it a bit boring round your way?

violethill · 09/08/2010 10:51

Anyone working in a hospital has to wash hands/scrub up as appropriate before patient contact anyway. Even if his house was immaculate, he'd be exposed to all sorts of germs on the journey to work.
Don't understand the relevance of his occupation at all.

gingernutlover · 09/08/2010 10:51

stains on the carpet is one thing, but surely it's basic hygiene to clean your kitchen and bathroom?

wagonweel · 09/08/2010 10:51

Alibaba, the state of someones how doesnt directly have anything to do with their job. But, someone who clearly lives in a filthly un-hygenic house and is working in a hospital with potentially vulnerable people is a concern. There is untidy and there is plain filthy, and this was plain filthy.

Just because you were invited to look doesn't make you any less nosy for looking!

wagonweel · 09/08/2010 10:53

Riven, no it wasnt just the obvious everyday stains on carpets that happen with split drinks and things. Even the cleaners were horrified by it and said its one of the worst theyv been to. Says it all really.

I find it deeply depressing that people exist who would invite the neighbours round to look at a dirty house. And that said neighbours would then gossip about it on the internet.

Did the owners show off the 'immaculate state' of the property before the dirty foreign family moved in, too?

violethill · 09/08/2010 10:54

What effect do you think this had on his patients then?

belgo · 09/08/2010 10:55

That's decided then, you spoke to the cleaners, let's get him struck off.

ZZZenAgain · 09/08/2010 10:56

if my neighbours rented their house out and found it left in a shockingly dirty state, I think they might tell me about it and show me it too. I can understand that.

gorionine · 09/08/2010 10:56

Am I the only one who thinks that a house always looks much dirtier when completely empty than when lived in?

By that I mean for exmple that my carpet looks ok, is cleaned thouroughly every 6 months but if I wasd to take out all my livingroom fourniture right now, the carpet would look cleaner under said fourniture than on the parts that have been walked on for a few months which will look filthy IYSWIM.

Haliborange · 09/08/2010 10:57

Sigh. I don't even know where to start.

Where's AnyFucker when you need her?

MorningTownRide · 09/08/2010 10:58

"think it happens more often than you would assume with rented accommodation." Hmm

think too my assumnption would be that someone who works in the medical profession has a reasonably clean home. If I thought about it at all, I suppose I would assume so.

If it was gobsmackingly filthy, yes I can understand the owners being surprised at that. Probably assumed a professional working in that field would look after their home, not more so than say an accountant but yes, I can understand the owners being surprised if the place was a real mess - and unhappy and wanting to show their friends and commiserate a bit.

ZZZenAgain · 09/08/2010 11:00

why the sceptical face?
