A friend just popped round with a present to celebrate that I had started my periods again after having the baby :D

I was sulking about it, and now I am grinning from ear to ear :)

She sometimes comes on here, so, hi if you are reading this, and THANKYOU.

This is an actual milestone, and I now feel that it has been acknowledged. Ace.

Now, time to break out the mooncup...

heymango, you could take a little bottle of water in with you and rinse it, or you could wipe it with toilet paper
you can often find a toilet with sink in cubicle if you really have to
you don't have to empty as frequently as you change a tampon, as they hold more blood
i've never emptied mine in a public toilet i don't think - i do have a light flow though

FionaSH · 08/08/2010 19:28

coupleofkooks - LOL all you like. All I meant was, surely I (someone very open to new ideas, especially period-related if it is less faff than tampons & pads) and all my female friends would have heard of a mooncup if it was so bells & whistles as some of the comments on here suggest...

And, er, how have I suggested I don't want to believe it works?? I wouldn't have asked questions if that were true, would I.

Someone get out the wrong side of bed?!

FionaSH · 08/08/2010 19:29

Or perhaps you work for mooncup.co.uk? Grin

LynetteScavo · 08/08/2010 19:33

Congratulations on getting your period after having a baby?????

Hmm Confused

Northernlurker · 08/08/2010 19:37

I think people were asking lower down the thread about when do periods return? All I can say is that it is unpredictable. For many people who are breastfeeding the return coincides with giving up night feeds but some people find they come back at 6 weeks any way when you're still feeding 24 hours a day. Personally I had about 9 months off with the first two dc and then just over a year with dc3 (who did have night feeds longer)

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 08/08/2010 19:43

search for mooncups in the archives there's loads of stuff.

I been using it a couple of months andit's great took a couple of days to get used too (and cut the tail off.... did it slowly as I didn't want to take off too much ended up scutting it all off) but have saved me money already.

mangoandlime · 08/08/2010 19:45

Not something I'd go out of my way to celebrate, maybe it'd warrant a mention in passing but that's about it.

FionaSH · 08/08/2010 19:49

Isn't that the OP's point? She was feeling pretty crappy about it, so her friend cheered her up?
When I was struggling with morning sickness, my friend made a morning sickness present...a box with all the things in that they say are supposed to help!! Ginger biscuits, a lemon, sherbet etc.
Didn't help the sickness, but the thought was greatly appreciated!!

CoupleofKooks · 08/08/2010 19:55

fiona, i thought "surely i would have heard of it if it works?" was fairly clear - you don't think it works!
i just thought it was an amusingly arrogant thing to say
i don't work for them but i am using one RIGHT NOW and they make my periods SO MUCH MORE PLEASANT that i do get evangelical about them

and it annoys me when people assume they are revolting, out of ignorance, when they really aren't (tampons are, IMO)

but sorry
will stop being narky
(in my defence, i am menstruating :o)

honestly, removal etc is not messy
i have had more mess with a tampon - i find tampons can be unpredictable - that bit where you have to pull it out and who knows where it will swing to Shock
you can be much more controlled with a mooncup as it is (hopefully) firmly in your hand the whole time
if you can manage to carry a cup of tea across the room without spilling it, you can remove a mooncup and empty it into the toilet

mangoandlime · 08/08/2010 19:58

Okay, so I misread 'celebrating' and return of op's period being 'acknowledged'. Hmm

FionaSH · 08/08/2010 20:02

Even with your grumpiness coupleofkooks, I have looked to see my nearest stockist and will be getting one tomorrow in preparation for the inevitable return...

It wasn't meant to be arrogant, just a "I'm a joe bloggs, either their marketing is cr*p, it's a new product, or it doesn't work" if I (Joe Bloggs) have not heard of it.

hugglymugly · 08/08/2010 20:02

Many decades ago, I explored alternative contraception to the pill after I'd had my first child. I used both the cap and the diaphragm and didn't have any difficulty in insertion or removal. That was probably because they were popular methods at a time when there were concerns about long-term use of the pill as it was back then, and the family planning nurses were very experienced in giving advice about using those kinds of barrier methods. I learned to feel and identify the bits of my anatomy and whether I'd inserted it properly (which was checked by the nurse) and learned how to remove it.

On one occasion I took out the diaphragm the next morning and realised that I had started my period during the night and it had caught everything. I thought, wouldn't something like that be useful during menstruation? Thirty years later there's the mooncup.

I wonder if some women would be more willing to try the mooncup if they had someone to talk them through the insertion/removal process, much as I got from those family planning nurses all those years ago.

Many years after I'd had my second child, I wished I had kept my diaphragm, because it probably would have been better at dealing with my periods than all that sanpro and VAT.

Me too.

Empty morning and night. No need for other times (with added bones of the measuring doo-dah!)

CoupleofKooks · 08/08/2010 20:12

fiona i think they are talked about so often on MN that i forget the world outside haven't always heard of them
they are brilliant and i am really glad you are trying them
i do think their marketing could be better, definitely

MmeLindt · 08/08/2010 20:13

Fiona
I think that the mooncup is so spectacularly difficult to find appropriate marketing for as most women have the same reaction as you and others on this thread had.

Can anyone think of a catchy slogan?

I heard about it on MN, I think it is pretty much word of mouth

FionaSH · 08/08/2010 20:13

everythingiseverything DISCLAIMER - at the risk of appearing arrogant and disbelieving....how much does the cones work? Like noticeable impact on stress incontinence? Blush

Sorry OP, hijacking thread again...

glasscompletelybroken · 08/08/2010 20:16

I followed another thread about these recently and am seriously thinking about getting one. One question though - I read that it sits lower in the vagina than a tampon, does that mean you can feel it? I was also worried about leaking as my periods are very heavy. V interested to hear any other comments.

FionaSH · 08/08/2010 20:16

*Mmelindt" do you really think that's true? Maybe my friends and I are just ridiculously open and talk about these things quite freely. I would expect they could be marketed right next to tampons etc in supermarkets...apparently they sell them in Boots, but I've never seen them. I'm going to hunt one down tomorrow!

Maybe I am just quite open. My sister practically has a stroke if anyone says "period" "mentruation" or "tampon". Ok, it's probably me.

CoupleofKooks · 08/08/2010 20:20

glass they sit near the entrance to your vagina
you can't feel them (if you can, something is not right)
i have spoken to lots of women with heavy periods who have tried them (on MN, i honestly don't work for mooncup although sometimes i think i SHOULD), and several have said their periods actually become lighter while using a mooncup
they felt that tampons leached more blood from them and that their periods were more comfortable and less heavy when using mooncups
the women with heavy periods whose periods remained heavy while using mooncups, said they had to change less frequently as the mooncup holds more blood
some use a towel or panty liner as a back up
some women were using extra large tampon and very thick towels and having to change very frequently, so were relieved that the mooncup meant less sanpro use and fewer trips to the toilet

CoupleofKooks · 08/08/2010 20:21

fiona the website 'bodykind' often have the best deals on them

MmeLindt · 08/08/2010 20:28

Fiona
According to MC website, they are available in Boots, but I have never seen them there. Even in the big ones.

I bought mine in a small healthfood store, much to the embarrassment of the spotty youth on the desk who had to ask what size of MC I needed.
