It's this village on the coast in the middle of nowhere, seems like it should be really busy, there is a shop and a cafe/chippy but there are hardly any people here, it's really bizarre.
I have seen some children running about but never any teenagers or babies. I've onyl ever seen under a dozen grownups in the week I've lived here.
Oh, and no-one has a car ether, even though there is a bus which I have never seen anyone on, and a train track but I've not heard a train either.
None of the adults talk to me, they just look through me as if I am invisible.

I just feel really creeped out. AIBU to get out of my contract and move somewhere else

Are there any white bouncing balls?

pippop1 · 08/08/2010 17:07

How odd. What is the name of this place please?

UnholyMoley · 08/08/2010 17:07

hehehe at Kathy Grin

Are you sure you're not on the set of a horror movie?

hippipotamiHasLost92lbs · 08/08/2010 17:07

It is the summer holidays! So I assume (think) that the locals have moved out for the time being and that aliens holiday makers have moved in.

Clutching at straws, I know...

Dimtan · 08/08/2010 17:09

No, there's NOONE here. BUt what is really weird is it seems liek there shoudl be more people. It's set up for them, there are houses that all look really well kept and clean and it shoudl be a tourist trap with the mountains and beach on both sides but nothing.
It's so quiet. I can hear a helicopter going over now and then though.

YABU. It doesn't sound "seriously weird", just a quiet place. I'm assuming you're from a busy town/city? There must be things going on if you look for them. What activities are on at the nearest town, or advertised in the local paper, library, community hall, church, college, post office? Sounds like there is not entertainment handed out on a plate but there must still be some nice people to meet, somewhere nearby.

racingheart · 08/08/2010 17:11

hippi, I once went househunting in a place like that. It was weird. the mothers walked the streets with their buggies, looking like zombies and didn't catch your eye or smile. Apart from them there was no one around. It creeped me out. Then when we got to the village we now live in, everyone met your eye and chatted and people of all ages were on the streets.

Sympathies. hope it picks up by the end of the summer!

UnholyMoley · 08/08/2010 17:12

Perhaps you've moved into one of those villages they set up so the army can bomb them, in training.

I've often noticed (on sunday walks) that those private housing estates - usually built in the seventies - with beautifully trimmed gardens at the front (and white metal chains instead of walls or fences) are deserted at the weekend. Sometimes there is a child's bike lying abandoned on a path with a wheel spinning, but never any sign of any people.

FlorenceDaphne · 08/08/2010 17:12

It sounds like the start of a Stephen King short story...

LaundryLyne · 08/08/2010 17:13

Oh, is this a joke thread about a film most of us haven't seen? Confused

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 08/08/2010 17:13

You've moved to the twilight zone or stepford. Do all the wives have a glazed, smiley expression?

PinkyMe · 08/08/2010 17:13

Enjoy it.

Would happily swap to get away from numpty round the corner with his souped up car and noisy exhausts.

expatinscotland · 08/08/2010 17:14

Be of good cheer that it's so quiet. The speed freak next to us upstairs and to the left blasted rave music/hard techno till about 6AM.

I'd kill for some fucking silence.

Secondly, out of curiosity, why did you move to a place you'd never visited?

Dimtan · 08/08/2010 17:23

I moved here because I have a New job in the the nearest big Town and this was the only place I could afford.

There doesn't appear to be a community centre, or a church/village hall or anything like that.
There does seem to be somethign happening at times, I can hear sirens every day it seems like, but I never see anything where I am (on the outskirts)

StuckInTheMiddleWithYou · 08/08/2010 17:24

Which part of the country is it? It sounds familiar...

Dimtan · 08/08/2010 17:24

There aren't any mums with buggies. There are no babies, no playground, no teenagers, no children apart from these 4 or 5 who I see running around.
I'm not being dramatic or overexagerating, seriously NO BABIES, how weird is that!

OP posts:
annh · 08/08/2010 17:24

So stop being coy and tell us whereabouts this place is!

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 08/08/2010 17:28

If you're on the coast is it a 'nice' area if so it's probably a lovely village killed by second home owners

Dimtan · 08/08/2010 17:28

Oh sorry, xposts. It's on the west coast of wales, seriously beautiful area, mountains and forests and a beautiful beach with some very cool caves. It is just gorgeous, apart from the Marie Celeste feel to the place.
Went for a walk this morning and discovered that there isn't even a pub!

OP posts:
venusonarockbun · 08/08/2010 17:31

Had you not seen the place before you moved there? Can you get out of your contract if youve already moved? I do think you need to give yourself time though. Its very quiet where I am too but everyone seems to be on holiday!

Alouiseg · 08/08/2010 17:33

Ah, Wales........the penny drops.

Dimtan · 08/08/2010 17:37

Hmm Alouiseg. I have lived in wales for years.
This isn't the people it's the lack of them. How can there be this massive village but only a dozen adults. veyr weird. Who shops in the store? and eats in the cafe?
I've never seen customers in there.

OP posts:
ItsGraceActually · 08/08/2010 17:37

Lots of villages don't have pubs these days :( People from outlying homes are less willing to drive back after a skinful.

If you're in one of the strong Methodist areas, there might never have been a pub - though there would be a chapel!

I bet Doris got it right: the houses are owned by absentees; there's no work (hence low rental) so most young adults have moved away; the kids are staying with their grandparents.

Didn't you even see anyone out doing their lawn, washing the car or dead-heading the roses, this morning?

ItsGraceActually · 08/08/2010 17:40

I lived in a fantastic seaside town on the south coast . The cafe was so deserted, I thought it must be a money-laundering scam! As it turned out, though, it got packed whenever ew had a sunny weekend. Ths summer trade was enough to keep the place open all year round.

You get used to this weird shit when you live in a holiday place ...

usualsuspect · 08/08/2010 17:42

do the children look like this
