To use ds prescription

strawberrycake · 06/08/2010 20:50

My 9 week old ds has been a nightmare to feed from day one, and it got worse and worse with hospital visit for dehydration and a crazy amount of diarrhea. Thankfully we seem to have stumbled on the magic bullet...soya milk. My GP prescribed it and he just started to eat again and he's no longer pooing/ screaming in pain all day. Obviously I'm very happy and told my friend today.

She seemed shocked I got it on prescription free and told me you can buy it off the shelf in the Tesco near her (she did as she's vegan). I didn't know this, it's not on the shelf anywhere near me and it's ordered in specially for me by boots. She said I should pay for it as I pay for formula already and it's cheeky to get it free. I see some logic in this, and I'd expect to pay for his food. On the other hand though if I were to not use the prescription I wouldn't know where to get it, I don't drive, nowhere within an hours walk sells it and the online supermarket I use don't do it. It would be a big trek to bulk buy it. I don't know if it costs the same/ more as I haven't seen it.

Would you use the prescription, or would you find it cheeky? I presumed until today it was a prescription only milk! I guess I could ask boots by me to order it, but they'd probably think I was a nutter. They are lovely down there and great me and know me and do all the repeats for me to pick up when I come in with no effort on my part. I'd have to tell them to stop this and look like a loon to them.

The difference is that she chooses to be vegan. Your son doesn't choose to have feeding problems. No, YANBU in the slightest, and I hope the soya milk continues to do the trick. Smile

fernie3 · 06/08/2010 20:52

personally I would use the prescription.

Sorry to hear you have both had such a rough start to his little life - hopefully it will all calm down now!!

Ignore you batshit mate. If you can get it on prescription then do so. People get all kinds of medication on prescription because it's free or cheaper that you can buy over the counter - it's no different.

I guess the only time I would say that perhaps you should buy it yourself, would be that if you were very well off, then I suppose it would leave a bit more money in the 'purse' - but it's gnats pee really isn't it.

[You can buy soya milk everywhere - you can even get it in cafes for hotdrinks and babies)

colditz · 06/08/2010 20:57

She doesn't buy bloody soy infant formula, she buys normal soy milk that's the same price as ordinary cows milk. Your soy formula would cost about £12 a tub and usually DOES have to be ordered in at boots. You will not find it 'on the shelf at Tesco. She buys <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http.cdnlayer.com/smoola/00/00/4b/a74ad90c91474840_m.jpg&imgrefurl=biggestmenu.com/rdr/London/London/HollandandBarrett-1592121/vanilla-soy-milk-19314&usg=__u7zex46jj-nFIF2QLJXiJje3fFo=&h=666&w=500&sz=54&hl=en&start=0&tbnid=7tT7Wzt3KKkHUM:&tbnh=146&tbnw=114&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dsoya%2Bmilk%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26sa%3DG%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-GB:official%26gbv%3D2%26biw%3D1024%26bih%3D576%26tbs%3Disch:1&itbs=1&iact=rc&dur=305&ei=zmhcTIjWN5CNOPeL6ZgP&oei=zmhcTIjWN5CNOPeL6ZgP&esq=1&page=1&ndsp=15&ved=1t:429,r:4,s:0&tx=64&ty=82" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this, you need <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=www.baby99.co.uk/f-3/222489/SMA-WYSOY-Soya-Infant-Formula-860g.jpg&imgrefurl=www.baby99.co.uk/view-prod/3/99576058/baby-Cow-Gate-Infasoy-Soya-Infant-Formula-From-Birth-900g.html&usg=__v_WEVyDXnkwWgPqS00zMH590j7U=&h=250&w=250&sz=20&hl=en&start=17&tbnid=EiR9SVep6WXQoM:&tbnh=134&tbnw=138&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dsoya%2Bformula%2Binfant%2Bmilk%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-GB:official%26gbv%3D2%26biw%3D1024%26bih%3D576%26tbs%3Disch:10%2C456&itbs=1&iact=rc&dur=311&ei=-WhcTJ_kNoWUjAfpnqHzAw&oei=8GhcTJfSNtaeOJu9kaAP&esq=2&page=2&ndsp=15&ved=1t:429,r:5,s:17&tx=70&ty=77&biw=1024&bih=576" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this

Your friend is ignorant. Her shock comes from a lack of insight and knowledge about babies.

strawberrycake · 06/08/2010 20:58

I guess GP will do tests if it works for 2 weeks. We've been more the 'throw everything at him and see if works' stage as it's been getting to be more and more urgent to find a solution to his feeding issues. He's stopped gaining, and just started to lose weight and was nearly reaching total feed refusal plus literally didn't poo, just had a constant stream of yellow water trickling out of him. Obvious dehydration/ nutrition issues getting worse. He was sleeping nearly all day/night with around 10-15min max staying awake time.

I don't care right now WHY it works yet, just want anything that will make him happy (and he has been happy today Grin.

Soya cow and gate. Do I live somewhere where no one has heard of the stuff?! Funnily my mum just said in her (posh!) local pharmacy there's a range of infant soya.

TonariNoTotoro · 06/08/2010 21:02

She's got a cheek, of course you should use the prescription! He has a medical need, this is backed up by your GP, who the hell does your 'friend' think she is?

If she wants to get snarky, why not tell her that coeliacs can get food on prescription, (as deemed fit by GPs/NICE/PCTs etc) See what her reaction is to that!

strawberrycake · 06/08/2010 21:02

We're average well off, 2-bed flat we own but mostly mortgage, both working. Live comfortably but don't holiday/ buy beyond the basics or go out on a regular basis. We're not poor, but live sensibly and are aware of cash flow and don't panic at the end of the month.

My younger had some problems with her ankles and got lovely little climbing boot type shoes on prescription for about two years. Which meant we didn't have to buy any shoes. I felt guilty for about ten seconds.

Tras · 06/08/2010 21:03

Your friend sounds a bit jealous to me! Of course you should get it on prescription if your baby requires it.

sanielle · 06/08/2010 21:04

Hardly cheeky if its the only way you can get hold of it!

hanreeoak · 06/08/2010 21:05

My ds3 has a dairy allergy (also egg and wheat - but thats another topic) he has soya formula on prescription.

Soya milk that is bought in supermarkets is not suitable for babies, it has to be proper baby soya formula. My DS has infasoy on prescription, which was prescribed at the hospital. He has also sees a dietitian as his diet is so limited, and she said that he has to have the prescribed milk.

YANBU a TRAINED DOCTOR has prescribed it. It makes me so annoyed when people comment about other peoples childrens diets, allergies are not a choice (a big pain in the arse - but not a choice, like your friend)

Hope that it works for you, my DS is doing so well on it.

P.S the 'Allergies' topic on here can be really useful, I have been given lots of great advice and help through it.

TonariNoTotoro · 06/08/2010 21:05

It doesn't matter how much you earn/how well off you are. Your child has been prescribed something that he clearly needs for his wellbeing.

Also what tokyo said - people get pissy about prescription shoes/boots for SN children. Some people are just arseholes.

Sorry to get so ranty, this attitude just pisses me off Angry

Bless your little man.

She's just miffed that she had to pay. Look, you need specialty formula, she doesn't need it, its nice that you dont have to pay. Just use the flaming prescription, and make no apologies.

I know you can get SMA Wysoy at my local big Tesco. That might be what she used and where she got it.

I got given something on prescription for my first child - what was it, Gaviscon or something - I went to the chemist and expected to pay for it but didn't realise children were free. Technically I could have "bought" that as well. Sod it, its no different.

strawberrycake · 06/08/2010 21:07

I'll research the whole thing a bit more when I've caught up with my sleep in about a weeks time hanreeoak! I'm just thinking 'laa laa laa he'll grow out of it laa laa...' at the moment :-)

I thought I was going to be flamed by people telling me to buy my son's food!

Deux · 06/08/2010 21:07

Good grief, there is a medical need for your poor wee man. So glad to hear that he is no longer poorly. My DS had prescription formula due to a dairy intolerance and it never occured to me that it was 'cheeky'. Sounds like your friend's nose is out of joint. What an ass. Tell her to have a rare steak.

hanreeoak · 06/08/2010 21:07

He also has special shoes............ I don't feel guilty at all.

TonariNoTotoro · 06/08/2010 21:09

Oh, by the way.. if something's on prescription for your child you've already 'paid' for it in NI contributions.

Just like you've already 'paid' for your GP.

strawberrycake · 06/08/2010 21:09

Altinkum..one step at a time. First he'll gain weight, feed and be happy then I'll research it and alternatives.

SloanyPony..at least she didn't see the 15 packets of infant gaviscon in the kitchen I also get!!!

OP posts:
pixierara · 06/08/2010 21:10

YANBU - whatever you earn is irrelevant, your DS has a medical need for this milk, it's not a decision he made.

strawberrycake · 06/08/2010 21:10

BY the way I meant to say thank you the advice altinkum..I'm not dismissing it!

OP posts:
mummysgoingmad · 06/08/2010 21:11

He NEEDS it your friends child did not, it was her choice to use soya milk. YANBU the prescription was given for you to use, not to then go off and buy it yourself.
