To think that they only let Morons in the cinema now?

Went to the cinema yesterday and dropped the kids (12 and 10) in the cinema showing Toy Story 3.

I didn't really fancy that, and was looking for a little bit of "me time" so went to see the gorgeous Leo in Inception.

As soon as the film started, a phone started ringing. OK sometimes people forget to turn their phones off, (but the bloody idiot took the call) It was a teenager in a group of about 4. I said very loudly "can you show some consideration and turn the damn phone off please". He did but there was lots of tutting and laughing.

Then some fuckers in my row, not teenagers but a middle aged couple, started talking about their holiday.

I'm not really ashamed to say that I lost it a little bit and shouted at them to "please goto the pub next door if you want to chat, I didn't pay £8.50 to hear your banal conversation".

FFS is it just me or is anyone else completely disilusioned with the cinema?

Your title could be construed as being offensive.

Shaz10 · 05/08/2010 19:08

You're telling me, I misread it as Mormons !

southeastastra · 05/08/2010 19:10

they do, you are right

Ladyanonymous · 05/08/2010 19:11

So did I.....

Angree · 05/08/2010 19:14

Ooh apologies, I've just read "what is a moron" on Google and I shouldn't really use that term-is there any way of changing the post title to something like A$$holes.

Sorry to digress from the point, but isn't an insult by it's very nature offensive? What is the difference between calling someone a moron (deemed unacceptable) and calling someone an idiot (which nobody seems to mind), when the dictionary definition of the two words is practically the same? Not trying to be controversial, just genuinely wondering what the difference is?

In answer to OP, there are lots of very rude inconsiderate people about and good for you for telling them so!

wahwah · 05/08/2010 19:30

Agree. OP woman after
My own heart for saying something rather than seething and moaning after event.

bigstripeytiger · 05/08/2010 19:53

I think that calling someone an idiot is equally offensive.

Obviously an insult is going to be offensive - but usually just to the person being insulted. Using a term used to describe a learning disability as an insult is offensive in a wider sense.

pjmama · 05/08/2010 19:59

Exactly my point, if "moron" is offensive then surely "idiot" should be too? But I've seen people being pulled up on MN for using one, but never the other. Just wondered why?

BitOfFun · 05/08/2010 20:05

The connotations that words like moron and idiot are lost in the mists of time now. Getting upset about them for the learning disability reason is just looking for something to be offended about. Are we saying that the words should be reserved to describe our children with LDs? Of course not. Language shifts and moves on.

Back on topic, I am glad you said something. The cinema costs a fortune these days.

FranSanDisco · 05/08/2010 20:10

Well done for saying something. Agree with BitOfFun - language moves on and moron describes inconsiderate assholes these days and not people with LDs.

Housewife2010 · 05/08/2010 21:46

I don't understand how cinema-goers can take noisy or smelly food into the cinema. Totally selfish. I once had someone eating a bag of crisps near me. I couldn't hear the film! Can't these people survive a couple of hours without a bg noisy/smelly snack? What's wrong with an icecream or popcorn?

MarthaQuest · 05/08/2010 21:49

What are acceptable insults, just out of interest?

southeastastra · 05/08/2010 21:50

cad and bounder

Katisha · 05/08/2010 21:54

Absolutely agree with OP. Cinema is full of people talking at the tops of their voices, and noisily eating offensive smelling food. FFS it's only a couple of hours at most - can you really not survive without food?

People in general seem to have less and less awareness of the impact their behaviour has on those around them and feel it is their "right" to behave however they like with no regard for anyone else.

"Excuse me, you young whippersnapper, would you be so kind as to turn off your electronic devices while we are viewing the moving picture. Thank you ever so much."

Would have been the appropriate way of asking the fuckwit to turn his mobile off.

In Germany they started selling nachos with cheese a couple of years ago. So you have to endure the smell of cheap melted cheese. Ick.

southeastastra · 05/08/2010 22:05

i went to see something at the 02 arena and the people behind me were eating that cheese thing! smelt awful - whose idea was that!

that really is not right

zisforzebra · 05/08/2010 23:46

YANBU. We've been taking our DSs (now 6 and 8) to the cinema since they were tiny and are capable of sitting and watching a decent length film without talking, fidgeting or disrupting anyone else. I don't see why it's so hard for others to do the same.

If I ran my own cinema I'd have a list of rules that would have to be obeyed or you'd be kicked out. They would be:

No entrance after the lights go down
No talking after the trailers had started
Any complaints of talking, seat kicking, mobile phones or eating too noisily would see you out the door.

I agree totally with Katisha regarding the lack of consideration shown towards others these days.

Noellefielding · 05/08/2010 23:53

you have to be careful if you confront anyone in case they follow you to Pizza Express and throw bleach or solvents in your face like that case in the last year.

Mytholmroyd · 06/08/2010 00:15

zisforzebra - can I come to your cinema please?

The girl sat behind me last night ate popcorn the whole way through but didnt simply put a piece in her mouth and chew it - she took about 5 or 6 noisy little bites out of every piece like a nibbling rabbit - so "crunch cruunch crunch crunch crunch" "crunch crunch cruunch crunch crunch" on and on and on without end all through the film.

Aaaargh! I spent the first hour glaring over my shoulder and the second with my fingers in my ears. Will wait for the video next time.

chaostrulyreigns · 06/08/2010 00:18

I too went to see Inception and my viewing pleasure was spoiled by people who have absolutely no idea about Cinema etiquette.

Mobile phones, texting copiously, chewing with great gusto, rocking, coming in late whilst talking at top volume about whether film had started, going out 4 times for a cigarette break, talking in the "he like then said/she turned round and went" fashion.

I sat tensely the whole film just waiting for next infraction. What a waste of money.

I also would not have guts to say anything.
