AIBU to think to cook ones own food in a restaurant is taking the piss?

Went for a meal last night, I'm on holiday. Didn't realize until food came to table ( burgers and prawn dishes) that the food was actually raw and I had to cook it on the volcanic stone on the plate in front of me. I was glad I hadn't ordered for the four year old DS. Was this place taking the piss or AIBU ?

YABVVU, you should have brought spuds and cooked them for the whole restaurant too.

scurryfunge · 03/08/2010 23:50

And washed up.....

draftywindows · 03/08/2010 23:51

My dd loves that kind of restaurant

ipodmama · 04/08/2010 00:00

My mum had a great deal of difficulty, half deaf and didn't know what was going on, thankfully the kind waitress showed her how to cook her burger. And it was hot sitting there over the stove, I began to feel VVU

And I refused to leave a tip

so you didn't book a table for tonight then? Bet you weren't expecting that kind of self catering!

Dorisfromfame · 04/08/2010 00:21

Certainly wouldn't fill me with glee. I do enough cooking at home thank you very much!

alypaly · 04/08/2010 00:27

they do that alot infrance and charge a bloody fortune in ski resorts.

alypaly · 04/08/2010 00:27

its as boring as fondues

MmeLindt · 04/08/2010 00:33

Where are you on holiday? It is not uncommon in Switzerland and Germany. In fact a lot of people love this kind of restaurant, it is called Heisser Stein here.

Did you misunderstand the menu?

SomeGuy · 04/08/2010 00:39

they do this in Japan, shabu-shabu. Quite tedious really IMO, but if people like it, so be it.

gtamom · 04/08/2010 02:06

I'd be annoyed, was there nothing telling you this on the menu? I'd want to send it back to be cooked, or else leave. I would stay home if I wanted to cook.

tortoiseonthehalfshell · 04/08/2010 02:13

I'm having trouble believing that the restaraunt type didn't indicate that this was the style.

There's lots of cuisines where cooking the food yourself is a common way to eat out. Shabu-shabu, steamboat, teppanyaki, bimbimbap...

So yes, YABU, and you're coming across as someone who wants a furrin holiday without any of those tedious furrin customs getting in the way.

AngelsOnHigh · 04/08/2010 07:01

It's just as bad in the supermarket when they expect you to use the self service aisle.

You buy their friggin groceries and then you are expected to scan and pack them yourself.

purepurple · 04/08/2010 07:05

We did this once, we really enjoyed it, it was so different. Mind you, we were on a river cruise down the river in Hamilton, New Zealand, so it was all very exciting

BalloonSlayer · 04/08/2010 07:09

I went to a place like that years ago and thought it was cool.

Now I am a SAHM tearing my hair out cooking for one DC with a food allergy, two other fussy DCs and a fussy DH, if I was taken out for a meal and had to cook it myself I would go BATSHIT.

gorionine · 04/08/2010 07:12

Like Mme lindt say it is very common in some places but I agree with you OP, it has to be clearly stated first or it would ennoy me too.

I remember my first and last experience at "Nandos". I had heard how fantastic it was and everything. My experience was that I had to set the table, get my own salt/pepper, drinks, napkins... and short of actually putting the chicken on the grill and washing up it was like having a meal at home. Not what you want when going out!

"its as boring as fondues"

Fondue boring? have you had it on your own in a cellar?

ipodmama · 04/08/2010 09:00

Mmelindt we are in the Isle of Wight. When I took the time to read the board separate from the menu board it did state we would be cooking it ourselves.... Too late then it was on the table

I love that sort of thing, and went out to a fondue restaurant with colleagues the other week and we had a great time doing it, even though the blokes were about it at first

Morloth · 04/08/2010 09:11

Sounds like fun to me, my DS would love it.

I like that swiss thing with the boiling oil where you get thin strips of meat and veg and stuff.

Also steamboat in Singapore is a treat.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 04/08/2010 09:12

YABU - I'm paying you, cook the damn food already.

coraltoes · 04/08/2010 09:13

oh so it was written in your own language, and stated on a board...hardly like it was sprung on you! Did you complain when it came? and say the waitress hadn't explained it to you? Cos you could easily have sent raw food back to the kitchen!

MmeLindt · 04/08/2010 13:25

I think that if the restaurant displayed information about how food was prepared, and you did not read it then YABU to complain about it.

Is it only this kind of meal served? Did you not see anyone else eating before you were served?
