AIBU to think to cook ones own food in a restaurant is taking the piss?

Went for a meal last night, I'm on holiday. Didn't realize until food came to table ( burgers and prawn dishes) that the food was actually raw and I had to cook it on the volcanic stone on the plate in front of me. I was glad I hadn't ordered for the four year old DS. Was this place taking the piss or AIBU ?

You didn't leave a tip for the waitress who brought you your drinks and food? That is uncalled for. Its not her fault you didn't read the menu carefully. I seriously doubt it doesn't mention its a cook your own meal establishment.... many Korean restaurants are like this, or the mongolian hot pot ones in china town.

I am not sure about the unreasonableness, it might be fun, it might be lazy. Surely the style would have been advertised or explained before ordering?

What does intrigue me is what would happen if a customer undercooked their burger and got E-coli poisoning. Who would the health inspector blame? Also, it depends on the food, but a lot of things (esp seafood, like scallops) need a skilled chef to bring out the best in them. I would be concerned if I was eating out that I was missing out of the expertise of a restaurant chef, but still paying the prices. That doesn't mean there is anything wrong with the restaurant though, just that I would go somewhere else.

Kramer's Make Your Own Pizza restaurant never took off either.

Who is responsible if you get food poisoning?

londonmackem · 04/08/2010 17:37

We went to Padstow and there was a similar thing upstairs in a pub. The smell was vile and I couldn't stay.
We waited ten minutes and had what i assume was the same steak downstairs in the same pub for £5 less and they cooked it for you without the greasy smell. It was called black rock or something.
I like a fondue (with chesse/chocolate rather than cooking meat again because of the smell).

There is a resturant like that near us, I love it. It's help yourself and you choose from different meats, veg, fruit, sauces and spices and then you mix it up on your table as you like.

They don't serve food that has to be specially cooked on the BBQ though, those sorts of foods are cooked by them, if they're on the menu.

CouldOfWouldOfShouldOf · 04/08/2010 17:58

It sounds fun, I wish there was something like that in the town I live in.

DD would love it.

tethersend · 04/08/2010 18:03

There is something like that in the town you live in!

It's the kitchen.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 04/08/2010 18:05

We took a big group for my birthday and my friend get very hot sitting next to the grill so decided to take his clothes off.... he was very drunk i was very

GetOrfMoiLand · 04/08/2010 18:06

It's not exactly cooking though, really, is it?

It's not as if you had to peel potatoes, pull the saucepan out the back of the cupboard, hunt down the knife which DP used to undo a plug, chop up onions, keep an eye on 3 pans at once and all the other joys of cooking.

You just hadto fry a bit of steak on a stone.

What's the problem with that?

And why did you not leave a tip for the poor waitress, hardly her fault is it.

LucyLouLou · 04/08/2010 18:11

Okay, now I've read through all the replies, it's obvious YABU. If you didn't read the notices, they can't be blamed for that, and not tipping the waitress because of this is quite spiteful. If there had been no notices, I would be on your side, but this is pretty much your fault, and you've taken it out on the waitress it seems.

ItsGraceActually · 04/08/2010 18:17

YABVU. In fact I think your DP is posting in another topic about your fault-finding on holiday

Chillax, babe!

RustyBear · 04/08/2010 18:18

The place we went to for my Dad's 100th birthday party had this (though they did baked haddock especially for him, as I don't think he'd have coped with it) I had a lamb steak & it was great as I could have it exactly as I wanted it. Everything except the steak was done by the staff.

I think if they had a board up telling you about it you were probably being a bit unreasonable, though I probably wouldn't have wanted to go to a place like that when my children were very small.

Rockbird · 04/08/2010 18:21

Where on the iow? Going soon, I'd like to try it.

CarmenSanDiego · 04/08/2010 18:25

Ooh, they have a chain of fondue restaurants in the US called The Melting Pot. I love it! You get a plate of meat and veggies and two big bubbling pots to cook them in. There's also a cheese course and a chocolate course. Mmmmmmm....

YABU.

saintlydamemrsturnip · 04/08/2010 18:30

Used to go to them a lot in Japan. Ordered intestines by mistake once- they did take a lot of cooking/chewing.

Don't they call it mongolian bbq or something here? I've been to several in London.

confuddledDOTcom · 05/08/2010 00:39

Mongolian is usually prepared by you and cooked by them, although traditionally Mongolian is cooked by the person eating it. The one I go to is Chinese.
