to think that baby boys pants are way too long?

I have a son who is 6 months old. He is on the 98th centile for length yet even his 3-6 month pants have to be rolled up (sometimes twice!). Has anyone else noticed this or do I have a child with freakishly out of proportion legs?

By pants do you mean trousers? If so then YANBU, DS1 is an average-height 3.6yo and even so I still have to roll up some of his age 2-3 trousers to stop him tripping over them!

thisisyesterday · 03/08/2010 21:12

um yes, you are being unreasonable

all depends how long your child's legs are...they can't fit everyone

ds1 was always in the right size trousers, or the next size up

ds2 always in smaller ones age-wise. because he has a long body and shorter legs

pjmama · 03/08/2010 21:12

It doesn't get any better as they get older! And they freakishly seem to grow out of them overnight. One day you're turning up the hems, then next time you put them on they're too short. Wierd.

Girls aren't any better. Shaped and fitted tshirts for little girls who don't have a waist yet and trousers with narrow waists and unfeasibly long legs - boot cut trousers won't stay rolled up either!

milliemoosmum · 03/08/2010 21:33

thisisyesterday Manics fan by any chance? Tis true that they can't fit everyone it's just that my boy is so long and seems quite in proportion I was kinda wondering what people with shorter babies do if the smaller size wouldn't fit on the waist. I remember having the same problem with my girl but she's quite short so I thought that was why.

I have this problem with DS, exacerbated by the fact that he wears cloth nappies so needs trousers with plenty of room in the bum! I actually find dungarees much better than trousers for him, the legs are not so long in proportion to the waist/bum/hip size.

Marjee · 03/08/2010 21:55

Yanbu, I have the same problem with ds! Hes quite big for his age (just above 91st centile) but his trousers all have to be rolled up or they just look ridiculous!

Firawla · 03/08/2010 21:58

alright for mine he is very tall with long legs, he outgrows the length before the waist. for ds1 i would have to roll a bit but no rolling at all for this one
maybe they should do them in different lengths tall short medium like some adult clothes

undercovamutha · 03/08/2010 22:01

YANBU My DS is very long (last time he was measured he was 91st centile for height), and his trousers always have to be rolled up once or twice. Total pain now he has started walking, as they keep unrolling, and he goes flying!

laweaselmys · 03/08/2010 22:02

AliBaba I have found that the cloth nappy issue has suddenly lessoned at 15mths with DD. I think she suddenly got lots taller and thinned out. Her trousers look almost normal instead of ridiculous...

Morloth · 03/08/2010 22:04

No! I have giant children, all the trousers are too sodding short.

My 4 month old is wearing 6-12 month clothes and they are only just long enough.

Don't get me started on the older kid's clothes...

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 03/08/2010 22:06

laweasel - DS has just turned 2 and the situation is much better than it was! The worst was when he was about 9 months, awful!

thisisyesterday · 03/08/2010 22:06

yes i am millimoosmum

it does vary.
ds2 is 2.5 and can still wear age 18-24 month trousers

his clothes are being passed straight down to ds3, who is 19 months younger than him, but who must have particularly long legs

mine are in cloth too, but they're quite skinny so the nappies help fill out their clothes

wubblybubbly · 03/08/2010 22:13

Our problem isn't leg length, it's massive bloody waists. He grows out of the length and they're still hanging off him.

Morloth · 03/08/2010 22:18

I have that problem as well wubbly it hasn't gotten any better.

DS1 wears an 8-9 for length but needs a 4-5 for waist...argh! He ends up with large quantities of material bunched up around his waist with the elastic adjustable type.

On the other hand, I am getting quite good at sewing...

milliemoosmum · 03/08/2010 22:20

hmm it seems everyone has different problems I like Firwala's idea of doing waist/leg measurements instead of categorising by age.

wubblybubbly · 03/08/2010 22:24

Morloth, I found a great pair of jeans from Mothercare when DS was just 1. They had built in triple roll up which I've gradually turned down over the years!. He has now grown out of them in the leg but still needed the waist tightened to three buttons in on the elastic. He's 3, what a bargain they were

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 03/08/2010 22:26

See we struggle with huge waists too - and short legs - on the same pair of trousers! Where they are too small is in the rise, children do not wear hipsters FGS.

Dungarees are the answer, must get DS some more this winter and skip the problematic trouser altogether.

whomovedmychocolate · 03/08/2010 22:31

DS has some that are just the right length. They fall down though every time he wears them

YANBU!

It's not just boys though, DD's trews are all too short! DS's are too long.

mamatomany · 03/08/2010 22:37

I like dungarees on babies, solves all manner of problems.

TabithaTwitchet · 03/08/2010 22:43

We struggle with the ridiculously massive waists here too. The only thing that stops DD's trousers being permanently round her ankles are her cloth nappies, but they still slip down. I am holding off potty training for as long as possible .

BaronessBomburst · 03/08/2010 22:56

DS is just over 5 months and is wearing shorts for 12-18 months because he is so chubby! Mind you, I reckon the sizing must be out because he isn't THAT fat. Most things say 74, which means the legs are way too long because he's only about 66 inches. The all-in-one sleepsuits are my best bet. Nothing to come untucked either.

LoveJules3 · 03/08/2010 23:06

I have one dd with a tiny waist and endless legs, one with a long body and short legs, and a ds who has been in 9-12m clothes since he was 6m. He's 10m now and i've just started buying 12-18.

Clothes shopping drives me bonkers, i can't buy clothes for all 3 from the same place!

ruthosaurus · 03/08/2010 23:06

DS is nearly 21mo and still fits into a pair of Mothercare 6-9mo trousers. He is often age 2-3 on his top half.

A couple of weeks ago, I bought him a hat in a gift shop (a fairly frequent event on our badly planned days out) and found out the label intended it for an 8-13 year old.

Either clothes sizing is mad, or DS tapers very drastically. I know I'm biased, but he doesn't look that odd to me.

stressheaderic · 03/08/2010 23:12

Clothes sizing is mad. DD is almost 6 months, and just under average weight and height. Today, she had on 3-6mth vest, 0-3mth trousers and 6-9mth top. All from same shop, all fitted fine. Barmy.

wubblybubbly · 03/08/2010 23:13
