may have to stop visting friend until this phase 'hopefully'passes.

My toddler is only allowed to play with certain toys at her house and is never allowed to take any toys outside ("these are indoor balls/toy") queue massive tantrum

also her pfb almost 1 is not allowed down on the ground outside !

i will admit to a certain amount of pfb itis myself but this seems to be taking it a bit far. I still remember my toddlers 1st birthday with all kids out in garden.

ive just read your post activate, i dont mind him going on grass at all, but not on block paving, its summer, he's wearing shorts, he is going to graze himself. Not being pfb at all, its just common sense to me.

God I really hate the way people are so scathing about PFBitis. Seriously, get over yourselves. So you know someone who is careful or anxious about something that you don't think is worth the effort? So what -- let them get on with it, who are they hurting? Or do you just enjoy scoffing at other parents for the warm glow it gives you?

Absolutely, I couldn't agree more.

Why does it bother people so much what other parents do if it doesn't hurt anyone? Would you feel the same way, for example, about going to someone's house where they take their shoes off inside? No, if you're a nice decent person you respect someone else's houserules.

What bothers me is why some people are so flipping judgemental. Does it make you feel better that you can judge someone else's parenting against your own?

My standards are so low I could write my rules on a post it note

ballstoit · 02/08/2010 21:12

usualsuspect, you are a control freak, mine go on a postage stamp .

Jigsaw Puzzles - the only toys that I wouldnt let go outside. But as he's only 1 he's probably not quite up to a 100 pc puzzle yet.

binjibaghi · 02/08/2010 21:12

I do think its more others standards than pfb ism.

Had one friend whos ds was 8 when mine was 2. Ds was driving a car around the floor at breakneck speed with fantastic sound effects and had it taken from him as it could scratch the oak wood floor and the toy was 6 years old and still looked new and she worried it wouldn't when ds had finished with it

Another friend is way more laid back than me and often recieves broken toys etc lets kids chuck a ball around inside but she just wants kids to have fun.

Im somewhere in the middle so ds luckily adapts in both places.

IMO YABU

DS2 (third child) likes nothing more than a swift crawl on the gravel outside, bare knees and all. It makes me wince, but he doesn't seem bothered!

PavlovtheCat · 02/08/2010 21:33

I have a friend who won't let children anywhere apart from the upstairs bedroom, in case anything gets broken. And I am talking about her own almost 1 year old child. the bedroom is 'baby proofed' though, apart from it being all white and cream so no food and drink there .

usualsuspect · 02/08/2010 21:36

One of mine developed an impressive hands and feet crawl for gravel and stone surfaces. We called it his spider crawl

Well yes you are you know. Just let him try and see and I think you'll be amazed in how robust small children are.

Still chuckling

worldgonemad72 · 02/08/2010 21:46

i never never thought i was but maybe i am
Anyway i dont care, i still wont let him crawl on block paving in shorts.

activate · 02/08/2010 21:48

bloody good for you - proof of a good mum that not giving a fuck what an internet sprite says

brava

SloanyPony · 03/08/2010 10:37

If you let them crawl on block paving they will develop an impressive set of knee calouses that will double as knee pads for skateboarding when they are older!

I have outdoor toys that I wont allow inside. The sandpit. The sand in the sandpit, which is mostly not in the sandpit. The Roary the Racing car that is covered in algae and has some kind of unrecognisable pond plant growing in the pooled water in its trunk. Oh, and a wheelbarrow that he once did a poo in - yes, I gave it a wipe down, but I can't get my head around it...

lecce · 03/08/2010 11:14

Oh thank you for that Sloany, I'm so glad I'm not the only one with strange life-forms growing on toys. This thread had been making me feel slightly inadequate as I imagined everyone's pristine toys. I feel better now!

muminthemiddle · 03/08/2010 11:19

Good advice earlier on in the thread about meeting at a neutral location.

nobody's toys get messed with then!!!

Triggles · 03/08/2010 16:55

We have a big rubber bin of toys that are just "outdoor toys" - the rest stay inside. Mainly because the ones in the bin can be rinsed off easily if they get dirty. And can be dumped in the bin while dirty and I can then just rinse everything in the bin off at once. Makes clean up a bit easier for me. And I truly hate toys covered in dirt and muck being dragged into the living room and onto the clean carpet. I don't think that's unreasonable. I have enough to do without adding to my workload. It's not that big a deal though - they grab toys out of the bin (or the whole bin) on their way outside, and drop them off inside the back door when they come in. Easy for everyone.

(oh, and our just turned 1yo isn't allowed to be crawling loose on the ground without close supervision because he will put anything and everything in his mouth and try to eat it right now! LOL)
