Sorry earpiercing again

DD2 aged 14 wants her ears pierced. I have always said not till 16 (when DD1 had hers done) but her constant moaning about it is grinding me down. In other ways I am a fairly indulgent parent and her wardrobe is stocked with Top Shop and Jack Wills clothes but I've always stuck to my guns on this one. Am I being unreasonable and Victorian as DD says or should I make her wait as I did with her sister. If most replies side with DD, I shall let her win this one.

I'd compromise - let her do it if she finds a proper piercer who' willing to do it wit parental consent. Get her to do her own research on risks and how to best look after them.

Don't let her do it at Claire's accessories.

Blondeshavemorefun · 31/07/2010 12:46

i was going to say that you have said something and stick to it, but ask dd1 what she thought and if she minded, but as dd1 is much older,things/times have chnaged

tbh 14 is old, i had my 1st lot at 11 and 2nd lot at 14/15

when i clicked on title i thought not another young child thread but was suprised to see older child

I agree Zukie. DD had hers done at Claires, with no problems at all, and I had mine done with a gun 26 years ago when I was 15 - again, no problems.

venusonarockbun · 31/07/2010 13:20

DD wanted an additional piercing in one ear only next to the original piercing . Went to claires and the girl marked the spot on the ear where it was to be pierced. I said its far too close to the original piercing. She disagreed and said it would be fine. Its not. There is no was dd can wear two earrings - the holes really are too close. We are hoping the second one will close up and wish we had insisted on moving the piercing.

Littlepurpleprincess · 31/07/2010 13:31

I would not give into whinging and complaining. Do you want to teach her that this how you get what you want?

Correct ear-peircing age issue is irrelavant.

At 14, she really should know better than to whinge.

serenity · 31/07/2010 13:38

DD had hers done at Claire's yesterday - they're fine for a simple first piercing imo. I'd use a proper piercing studio for anything else, but around here they tend to be linked to tattoo studios and you can't even enter until you're over 16 (and quite right too!)

I do hate the way MNers bandy the word 'chavvy' about - I think it says more about the user than the person they're describing tbh. Horrible word.

usualsuspect · 31/07/2010 13:43

Littlepurpleprincess ..have you got a 14 year old?

Littlepurpleprincess · 31/07/2010 13:47

No I haven't, and of course I know they do whinge. That doesn't mean you should give in.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 31/07/2010 13:48

Whingeing and moaning is what 14 year olds do best.

Littlepurpleprincess · 31/07/2010 13:50

I know, I'm the oldest of 7 siblings, all aged between 9 and 21. I also work with kids.

Squitten · 31/07/2010 13:51

I'd probably just let her have them done. I had mine done when I was 11.

And next time she accuses you of being "Victorian", send her to a workhouse

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 31/07/2010 13:58

If you work with 14 year olds then you'll know what they're like.

SpringHeeledJack · 31/07/2010 14:29

serenity I know what you mean about the use of the word 'chavvy'

..it makes me fuuuume

beanlet · 31/07/2010 14:35

Say no and make her wait -- if she has an ounce of get-up-and-go she'll go out and get them pierced herself, and sod you .

usualsuspect · 31/07/2010 14:38

Ice cube and needle anyone

Baileysismyfriend · 31/07/2010 14:43

Whats wrong with having them done at Claire's?

I had mine pierced by my GP - my mum was very strict about that sort of thing - and he used a gun which is exactly the same method as Claire's.

WidowWadman · 31/07/2010 15:39

It's the gun that's wrong. Should be banned imo.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 31/07/2010 16:45

Why?!

Wandaaa · 31/07/2010 16:51

DD had her ears pierced at Claires when she was 4, she's never had an infection.

DD asked for her ears to be pierced because most of her friends already had them done and when she had her pre school boosters I told her that it would be like having her ears pierced. In fact the ear piercing was probably less painful as they did both ears together compared to an injection in each arm.

serenity · 31/07/2010 17:03

It's a lot more traumatic using a gun, than having it done with a needle. Guns cause a lot more bruising. IME piercings done with a gun hurt more, for a longer period, and are more likely to get infected. Also, piercing studios on the whole tend to be far stricter about the hygiene side - the medical disclaimers I've filled out for those have asked for GP details, past history etc. It's been a lot more reassuringly than the point and click and tick-the-box you get in places like Claires (although as I said above, I'm fine with Claires for a bog standard first ear piercing)

Everybody has their own experiences though

Ripeberry · 31/07/2010 17:24

I had my ears pierced when I was 16yrs old.
My mum came along to have hers done as well (never had pierced ears) and I went first and it was OK.
Then mum went in and she jumped at the first one and it tore a bit, but the second one was OK.
She ended up with an infection and after a couple of months just let them close up.
